As it has in so many games this year, regardless of team.

First: I am a Printer fan.
Second: I believe Painter recruits well, has a great basketball mind, and is a good x's & o's coach.

Today's game was hard played well played by both teams, well coached by both coaches, and well referee'd. All up until the tech was called. Then, the worm turned. Calls started going the other way and our players got very frustrated. We started getting mugged on every play and they got away with it.

One thing great tourney coaches have in common is they know how to work the refs successfully. Painter does not. He is too nice when it comes to the refs. We out-played Michigan today. Beilein(sp) played the refs better and won the game. (that, and we missed too many free throws)

I have watched a lot of basketball. I have seen many a tourney game won or lost depending on how a successful coach works the refs.

Painter may be working the refs quietly and constantly, I don't know. However, if he is going to have success in the tourney, I believe he is going to need to work them more effectively, especially considering Haas will be back next year with a similar, if not amplified referee problem. They don't know how to call the way Haas gets mugged and Painter needs to help them figure it out.

Of the criticisms of Painter I've read here today, this is the one I'm most inclined to agree with. We got very few calls from that point forward. Beilein won the game with the officials.

I think somebody jacked your account. You can't be actually admitting CMP doesn't know how to work the officials.

Beilein said it was the first tech he had in two years, but it was effective. I don't know how CMP could have countered it, but I believe it was the difference maker in this game.

Which one? HP? Cannon? Lexmark? Dot Matrix? I HAVE TO KNOW!!!!*

*Sorry, I had to. With the quagmire (giggity) the forum turned in to yesterday, some levity I think was needed :D

I don't think there was a whole lot Painter could do to match it. For one refs don't want to kick coaches out of the game so after he got his first T, Beilein could pretty much say whatever he wanted with what I think was a lower chance of getting a second. Also the timing was important because he stopped our run in the first half. By the time they had really made some poor calls against us we were deep into the game and had Painter gotten a T, the outcome may have hurt more than it would help.

My theory is that Painter, being a very pragmatic, rational, unemotional, analytics-based guy, just doesn't want to give the other team free points and possibly an extra possession. I totally get that. But there is a time to take a risk and CMP doesnt seem to think enough of a reward is possible.

Probably the biggest difference between he and Gene.

I agree. He did briefly attempt a zone, so maybe someday we'll see a tantrum from CMP. Doubt it, but I hope I am in attendance if he does as it would be a historic occasion.

I heard he has requested that the players chairs not be chained together next year .... just a rumor... but...
