What happens to our program, if Walters does not end up getting let go this year?

Now we have to figure out our overtime strategy. Always something to do. Haha
With our defense, we won’t hold anyone out from scoring a touchdown, so we might as well go for a possible TD each time and the 2 point conversion and possibly get lucky. Not that we have to worry about that in our final few games.

Saints fired their HC this morning after losing seven in a row. I know it is NFL, but college football is professional now to a certain now with the NIL and TV contracts. Time for us to follow the Saints.

Hard to blame Walters too much here, if at all. He was offered the job and took it. As others have previously mentioned there should have been more oversight on how the staff was put together. It's painfully obvious Walters needed guidance. Walters now and has been in a situation in which he's learning on the job. Not ideal for a B1G football.

In addition to only 1 win this year, the team has noticeably regressed in every facet outside of maybe punting this year.

It was a head scratcher of a hire, but I was optimistic. However, you just can't let this level of ineptitude continue for a third year in today's P4 college football. Losing is one thing, but what's worse is losing the fan base.

With this big of a gamble, there certainly better have been an early exit strategy when the gamble failed.

Exactly. What if we had offered Walters the same salary with a buyout of $1 million instead of $9 million. Would he have turned it down to stay as a DC at Illinois?

Probably. Most agents are negotiating these buyouts big time because they know a job like Purdue is risky and success is not a guarantee.

You’d be hard pressed to find coaching contracts in the P4 that don’t have these massive guarantees

Game, set, match. I guess we do not have any skilled players.
Take out Klare, and I think that is rhetorical
I expect it’s rhetorical as we have some very skilled players just major problems with schematics. Thieneman is the perfect example of someone who has the ability to be first team all big ten but is out of position and underutilized due to schemes.

$9m after 2 years is a really low buyout and likely not a barrier in firing him. Especially the part about it not being lump sum and paid out over 3 years.

Once NCAA "profit sharing" takes over, recruiting will be much better for teams like Purdue.
More D & O line depth and a Mike Alstott like RB is all this team needs :).

To answer the question asked, if Purdue it's Alum's cannot pony up the NIL money for better skilled players in the portal and recruitment the Boilers will settle being in the middle eventually, hoping for an even record and a minor bowl. A BIG name winning coach and staff will also cost BIG bucks also. We have to bring in 30+ players via the portal and recruiting that can play NOW. A difficult task to say the least! Bottom line is we should have three wins instead of one, but players, coaches and refs cost Purdue the two extra wins.

Refs?

It’s coaching first. Players second.

We aren’t wildly talented but there’s no reason we couldn’t have won 4 games this year and competed in some of the others we didn’t.

You don't give FORT KNOX to someone who is unproven. ADs who do will have a much shorter career than they anticipated.

Nil is not the issue of we were still winning 4 games we could have this conversation. Winning 1 game against the fcs and getting blown out by any team with a pulse isn't an NIL issue. We have a bad MAC coach getting paid P4 money.

Just watched 5 minutes of CRWs pre-PSU presser, and at one point he was asked what’s he’s learned through a rough season and he made up some BS and then finished with “and that’s what I’m going to take into next year.” The entire media just went silent, like 30-45 seconds of dead air, this is just absurd at this point.

I think he’s already been promised next year.

Becoming the head coach of Alabama has its risks.........

Funny you mentioned this. I listened to that and was stunned. Bunch of garbage. How did this guy con Bobinski so bad? He sold us a bag of air.

We have 17 players doing Senior Day festivities. 3 of the 17 are redshirt juniors.

I hope having 3 redshirt juniors doesn’t indicate that we are dumb enough to keep Walters with us being one of the worst P4 teams, if not the worst.

For the last two weeks, the announcers for both telecasts have talked about spending time and talking with Walters leading up to those games. Each set of announcers have talked about progress and getting set up for next year.

This could be a lot of BS, but I am really wondering if administrators are really considering keeping Walters around for another year. You look at how we are selling out almost every home game. I am not sure if the BOT really care about our football program.

I know that they might be waiting until the end of the year, but why not do it now if you are going to do it. National signing day is December 9th. Why not show potential recruits that we are going to correct this unless we are not going to correct this. I really hope I am wrong, but all of this silence gives me a bad feeling of us not pulling the trigger and staying status quo.

Do we really? I watch our game and it comes down to fundamentals and schematics. We have talented players. I even think our OLine can be good with correct coaching and 3 of them could come back. Our entire WR and TE room could be back too except Sowinski. I hate to say it but I think Card can be a good QB but we need a fresh start there. We are probably only 3-4 players on offense from having a respectable team talent-wise, it’s just poorly executed and that’s on the coaches.

It’s so hard to say on defense. This scheme makes everyone look bad. Even Thieneman. But again there’s probably 5-6 guys especially in the secondary I’d keep. Let me put it this way - i think we are probably more talented than indiana at 10 of 11 starters.

That has been weird. Yesterday they said he indicated the expected to stay and already had an offensive play caller in mind which was mind boggling because that has to be one of three following
1. Someone on staff - makes no sense since they would be calling plays now
2. Someone currently available. Which means to me someone is waiting to see if Walters is retained
OR
3. Current coach which if true Walters is really dumb for reporting to national news he’s poaching a coach during season and could get in trouble

and you don’t say that unless you have someone already locked up. He did say in a presser he had some big hitters reach out to him aaftwr they let Harrell go so maybe someone threw their hat in the ring unsolicited.

But to the original point it’s just weird even the media has bought in he is staying. When G&B confronted bobo about the report from Thamel he didn’t deny it, he just said he didn’t tell thamel that directly and then basically went on to defend Walters.

My hunch is if we move on from Walters either bobo gets thrown out with the bath water or someone taps him on shoulder and makes him do it.

if Walters stays ( hope not) maybe he'll coach the D and we wind up w/ a guy like Seth Littrell for OC. If I was the AD I give Bronco Mendenhall a call

Littrell? He got fired by his alma mater less than a year into it. I’m not sure he’s been great anywhere. If we are going to be stuck with Walters I hope they go after someone amazing. And if it is littrell why not bring him in now?

The catch clearly in the out of bounds of the end zone is another obvious sign that these guys aren't well coached on the details. How does the home team not realize where out of bounds is? And, yeah, the end zone design is dumb, but as a coach it's your job to make sure the players understand where the out of bounds is.

not my hope just seems like a Purdue thing to do, Walters will be a dead man walking next year if retained so who's going to join that situation

what ever happened to Burhenn ? injury?

It will be along the lines of a retread like Mike DeBord, John Schoop, Gary Nord, Walt Bell…OR a young guy from the G5 that wants a shot at the B1G.

The flag thrown at the end of that play is symbolic of the whole season.....

That’s crazy talk. There’s Thieneman, Jenkins, and Heldt who have somewhat high level ability. In the secondary, you have upperclassmen Stevens and Green, both of whom are absolutely horrendous. Then the true frosh Bradford and Grant who may end up fine but they’re not right now. Sillah and Ojata both are zeroes. Yanni and Miller at LB? That’s NAIA stuff. And then you have not one good player on the DL. None. We have at best marginal talent, and they are being coached poorly, so we get our faces kicked in every week.
