A 4th person or 4th option to step up. The top 3 are fine, but when one or two of those 3 do not have it that night, we are 50/50 on getting knocked off. We are thin like a model in Vegas. No matter how thin you slice it, there are still two sides. Thin equals a skinny result. There is a thin line that separates success and pain. Thin is part of think, which rhymes with stink.

Just sayin'

Must have not slept well if you wake up and that is your first thought🤣

Can you imagine what is running through Painter's brain during a season 24/7?

In all seriousness, you are 100% correct. Those guys have to make an impact even if they aren’t scoring. Can't be out there for cardio.

While I agree. Step back and think what that means. Offense would need to either be run for the 4th option OR they hit shots. So, if Colvin or Heide or cox can hit a few shots, then it’s all good. If one of them had hit a few shots these past few games, then we wouldn’t be as worried.

I think law of averages comes into play here and shots start to go down.

I think it's more the zeros across the board they've put up a few times. If they don't score in a game, no biggie, it happens.

If they don't score, and they don't get a rebound or really any stat other than minutes then it's more of a problem which is what Painter more or less said. Shots fall sooner or later, you don't worry about those as much as you do the effort stuff.

For sure. Hopefully conference play will bring more effort out of em

Our problem is when it's Smith, Loyer, Heide and Colvin on the floor, you have 4 jump shooters. Only Smith has proven his ability to either create or get his own shot (with some limited success but struggles against bigger defenders), which means you have 3 other guys hoping to get an open look. When the shots aren't falling, you need to find other ways to get buckets and we don't have that.

Nailed it. You don't have to run actions for your 4th and 5th option, there just needs to be a counter when defenses scheme to take away your primary action (back door cuts, open threes, etc.) and your secondary players need to execute.

100% agree. Was just saying that Heide and Colvin as 4th and 5th options don’t get anything run for them and I don’t think they are “allowed” to go create (even if they can’t).

Ok this is a doomsday comment but we don’t think Smith leaves after this year to go chase NIL somewhere else, right?

I'm not going to touch this with personal inquiry, but I doubt you are correct. First Ginny is from Arkansas and she is already away from family, but coached at Westfield and will return to coaching some day...maybe when Braden is through college and Maddox is in high school. Dustin has coached AAU and is very involved in Grand park and is maybe 40 miles away from his home and where he played high school ball. He has longtime friends and high school teammates such as Dewayne Ewing and Austin Parkinson not too far from Westfield. The family and grandpa live basketball. GRandpa no longer coaching but still referees. I don't see Dustin and Ginny moving and they don't want to watch Braden play on TV only...and Maddox is coming up and will be another gym rat. I could obviously be wrong, but I think there are a LOT of reasons for them to stay put...

I think Purdue will have to put together a competitive offer, just like they did this year. I think Braden recognizes what he has at Purdue and wouldn’t look to go elsewhere unless the money were so much greater that he couldn’t say no.

This is all based on the assumption that Purdue has a decent season. If they’re not winning, Braden may be tempted to go somewhere where he has a chance to make it back to the final four.

Nobody knows, but consider this: Braden could have went to a school other than Westfield...perhaps a team that would be even better than Westfield had Braden left, but he didn't. He stayed at Westfield and broke his foot. He already had a scholly from Purdue and could have stayed out the season to heal for Purdue. Instead he had a screw placed inside his foot and rested it hopeful he could play in the sectional a few weeks away. There were no guarantees, but he wanted to win Westfields first sectional. He never played until sectional and he was in the toughest sectional in the state. Well, Westfield won the sectional beating Fishers and Carmel and another team (Noblesville?) and he put on quite a show with some help from Cam Haffner (whose dad was in the NBA) who came out the third quarter taking some "iffy" shots that he made and really was key in the Carmel game in particular.

I'm guessing that Braden lives for competition and isn't afraid of the odds and if he would go to a loaded team...winning might not bring the satisfaction as the challenge of winning with a "good" team...sorta like Robinson turned down Michigan and the loaded fab five team and the money to go to Purdue. I think both may share that mental aspect...but I could be wrong since this is just my speculation. I'm guessing that there are people in the forum that played some pickup that preferred to play on a lesser team for that exact personal challenge.

Do you think Painter would have a 1 on 1 with Smith and say "What do you need me to get you from the portal?". (meaning, what does Painter need to go get in the portal to makes Smiths job easier and build a NC team)

I can see teams in need of a facilitating PG who can shoot coming after Smith with big $. But, Smith might also feel some sense of loyalty to Painter for being the only P5 program to recruit him.
