Portal Needs

I don’t see why 3 and 1 could be the same player. I would take a Cluff in a heartbeat to fulfill this role. I know he isn’t the shot blocker that some are looking for, but DJ will bring the rim protection and Cluff is an absolute beast on the boards if you look at the stats.

If you find the perfect player to fill #3, you take it, but there is only one Braden Smith and at minimum he is playing 37 minutes most games regardless of who Purdue brings in. Call me overly optimistic, but I think that CJ Cox as a sophomore will be a very good player, likely better than Lance Jones was a year ago. Retain the core guys and bring in Cluff and I am ecstatic.
I agree. And I think people are really underestimating Burgess' potential. I've watched him play more than most and he was nowhere near healthy this year. He is skilled and will get more physical with another year in the system. And dude is legit 6'11.

should have been shirted but DJ's injury came into play

Hell I think lots of posters are underestimating both Harris and Cox , both are gonna be ballers and can handle the ball and could spell Braden for short periods of time… 🤷🏼‍♂️🖤💛🏀
I like CJ and Harris, but who was the last payer who made a really significant jump between year 1 and 2? We all had huge expectations for Colvin and Heide and while both showed flashes, neither performed to the level everyone expected (admittedly both had good tourney runs)

Carsen Edwards, Jaden Ivey, Caleb Swanigan, Braden Smith, and Zach Edey all had arguably significant jumps in Year 2.

Some darn good players, there, even as freshman.

And not your question, Lenny.....but in looking at players in the program longer - Ryan Cline made a significant jump from year 3 to year 4. There is always the possibility if the player is willing to put in the work and has the belief and fortitude. Painter tries to give them all the guidance and resources to do it - naturally, it doesn't always work out.

1) Even if Berg isn't the guy (and he still might be) then Burgess might be. If he settles in and gets bigger you might want RB/TKR together part of the time. Coaches sure love him. DJ should be more than fine. He'd been playing non stop for a couple of years while growing. Now hes had a nice forced rest that should have allowed all his bones to continue developing. He's also apparently put on 20 lbs and working on getting stronger. he'll be 100% and "should" be significantly more of a factor next season. (fingers crossed). Between he and TKR not sure there's any minutes at 5 (and maybe 4) that won't be spoken for. In an ideal world, be great. But not sure they will play.
2) this for sure. I hope we can get that if someone leaves. But I still hope that one of Myles/Cam beats THEM out. ;)
DJ needs game reps. He needs a year before he's ready to be option 1 at the 5. Pairing him with someone like Cluff would be the right thing for his development and for the 2025/26 team goals.

I was about to respond that I don’t think we need or go for a guard… unless it’s big guard, 6’6” or bigger that can play wing/sf. I think a guy that can score from all 3 levels& create for himself and/or others, plays D and is quick enough to switch 4-5 ways, rebounds and is willing to pass… oh and 6’ 8/9” would be even better lol. In other words you can label him a guard with size of a forward/wing.

I am curious to see what Benter brings to the table? He’s got a bit more size, passes well and supposedly has a sweet shot. I ve heard rumblings of Dakota comparisons…🤷🏼‍♂️

I think we are still gonna go portaling to find that guy or a wing that’s similar to what Lance brought
Painter clearly said one or two guys and I don't think he said two because he's getting two bigs.

He's clearly open to taking another Lance Jones type IMO to go along with a big that can defend rebound and score a little like Cluff.

So obviously he doesn't think Burgess is ready by next season, nor do I think he thinks we are good with keeping the same guards for next season.

Yes Cox and Harris will get better and better, and yes Burgess has potential. But we all sing the praises of Heide and Colvin and it was up and down with them all season because a lot of players simply take time.

So getting a couple of seasoned bridge players in the front and back courts will set us up for a championship quality team next year while still allowing the sophs and Juniors plenty of time to continue to get better until it's their team the following season.

Yep. Obviously they’ll find the best fit but paint and staff know they need to go all in. This could be his best team/chance at a championship, at least for now. And yes, even more so than Edeys last year. And I’m guessing the players know this too.

Interested to see what they come up with.
