Walters hired

Will be interesting to see if he remains committed to the safety starting 30 yards from the line of scrimmage.
Well he wasn’t committed to that here. I’m not sure if maybe everyone just quit watching or what, but Thieneman was not playing that way for most of the year. What’s interesting is that last year when he was playing that way, he was an AA. Brought him up this year and he made literally zero plays on the ball and missed his fair share of tackles attacking near the Los.

This is a really good point.

Mind you, I haven't broken down any tape (I leave that to CRW) but it seems playing 30 yards back was quite an advantage in getting INTs. You're basically a center fielder playing that far. Be interesting to see how he does in a different system.

I admittedly didn't watch much of the season and almost nothing in the last half but I know I saw some of it early in the season and it was brought up on almost a weekly basis by the broadcasters last season. Maybe he eventually figured out that it wasn't working here.

My understanding is his buyout is reduced by whatever he makes with his new job.

Pretty amazing he was able to get a job as a DC at a P4 school so quickly. Huskie fans must not be paying much attention.
I don't believe his contract with Purdue included an offset in buyout.

I'm not surprised - he seems like a likeable guy and had success as a DC. He just wasn't ready for a head coaching job and made mistakes.

That is normal, but Nathan Baird seemed to believe that this provision was not in his buyout contract. I haven't looked at anything Nathan X'd out since Walters took the job.

He needed a few more years as a dc then 4 as a hc at a smaller school. We literally hired him 10 years too early and a very limited resume.
I believe this past year was a BIG eye opener for him as a head coach. He should have learned that friendship doesn’t necessarily make good coaches. Also, you need to have a staff of coaches that have multiple coaching experience to cover for incompetence in a coach like Harrell. To name a few! Maybe in a few years he will be ready to try again.

Teams didn’t have to throw on us to be successful this year.

They did a bit more with Scourton here and Jenkins playing IN position. Don’t blame Walters for Scourton but absolutely blame him for having a 6’5” 285lb DE play MLb. Especially in his scheme.

The fatal flaw was committing 5-6 to the LOS every play. Couple that with having to man cover 4-5 guys it didn’t leave anybody to cover the edges or middle of the field.

Who is the 6’5” 285 lb guy playing MLB? You can’t be talking about Jenkins, he’s 6’00” 250 lbs. that’s why he moved, he has no shot as an edge in the nfl

Still no less idiotic. Especially when he was making 400K. We can get crappy MLBs for free.

Pretty sure they moved him to keep him on the roster. He wanted to move to help his draft stock and would’ve left if they didn’t play him at LB

What’s funny is that he was terrible at it and still was the best we had.

There is a lot of truth to your comment. What I think happened is that Walters was whip-sawed, snookered and out-flanked by the portal. He was totally unprepared and unaware that so many of his best players were leaving for top dollar.

I agree. Who would say "no I'm not ready" and turn down an opportunity to be a head coach. Walters has had success at DC, can recruit, and from outside observations is passionate and worked hard. He would have benefited from a veteran, former head coach on his Purdue staff, but that's in the rear view mirror.

alot of the blame for the last two seasons and what it set up for the future are on the people that thought that hiring a very young and inexperienced dc was a good idea. They are all still employed. Embarassing when you step back and look at it.

He had nobody on the staff to say “No, don’t do that”
