I was reading some articles and watching some videos and I am so glad this young man is going to be at Purdue the next 2 to 3 years.

Very Athletic.....he will compliment V. Edwards and Taylor well and be able to step in right away and get minutes.

I have to say with Eastern, Ewing and Wheeler Purdue is adding athletic young men.

Haarms is going to do well too and Sasha will be a glue guy on both ends.

Excited to see what Ewing and J. Taylor add next year....both could be key pieces to a Final 4 run!

Why do you say 2 to 3 years??

I do like roster diversity they bring to Purdue's toolbox these guys bring. Sure hope all of them are good enough to compete for starters minutes.......guess they better or we will stink in a couple years.

Don't get the 3 year comment. Assumed since he was a JUCO transfer he only has 2 years.

I think he will have an impact at the 4 spot. Iowa St was after him. His Dad played at Duke? He will be another player from the Houston area so we seem to be establishing a pipeline there. I wish I had a chance to see him play at Tyler JC since it is only a couple hours from me.

Probably only 3 years in the small chance that Biggie comes back, he might opt to redshirt in order to maximize playing time.

Thank you others for clarifying my 2 to 3 year comment....I thought it was obvious.

Student athletes get 5 years to complete 4 years...he has exhausted two years at Tyler, so he has 3 years to play two at Purdue.

The reason Ewing is so key to next year is he can step right in with his experience and fill the void in minutes when Biggie goes and an even bigger fill in if Taylor gets hurt again or if Painter wants Taylor to play more of the 5 spot to relieve Haas.

Things will get really interesting if V. Edwards and Haas get positive NBA feedback as well as Biggie...then Eastern, Wheeler, Ewing, Haarms and the "Big Man to be Named later" Painter is going after still will be huge for next year.

I still think V. Edwards and Haas come back but either way Ewing and Taylor and Haarms will be huge depth next year at the 4 and 5, which was the reason for my initial post.

Boiler Up!

I hope you are correct becasue I thought he could be a help as well. The very few videos...parts of games I have watched...his effort left a LOT ot be desired. I hope what I watched was not his typical games. I can't imagine Matt recruiting someone that put forth little effort and so that supports something different than what I saw...

Only seen box scores, Ewing did have some double digit points and rebounds games.

Since we recruited Ewing from JC wouldn't you think he's capable of stepping in immediately and hitting the boards and/or playing D in the wake of Biggies departure? I mean there's a need at that position right now, imo. That's why he's here, right?

You might think so. Certainly higher probability of it anywany with a JC. But given probabilities....Since his first year...Painter has recruited just as many washouts as homerun guys who end up starters.... Who knows if any of these newbies will make the cut? However, for sure lately Painter's experience in recruiting has resulted in a higher probability recruit these last 3 years in terms of success. Hope that trend continues with this new bunch.

I'm aware of those as well. I made a comment on this a while back and oldboiler opined in agreement that he was surprised a coach would accept the laid back approach that I saw in his game as well.

Biggie will be gone. Haas and Edwards will be back. I see Sasha as a redshirt candidate. Not sure how he gets minutes. Hopefully Ewing's athleticism fills a void.

Good call, and it's hard to just flip that switch now that he will be playing against the big boys. Should be interesting to see what he can do. We really need him to show up since Taylor hasn't shown much and Haas has trouble staying on the floor.

Completely disagree. The level of competition can most certainly make you play at another level and playing against the Bi1G can do just that.
I'll temper my expectations for Ewing due to the fact that in the past our JC guys didn't produce significantly till their 2nd year.

Weren't you the one signing the praises of Taylor before he ever set foot on campus?

Yes, and he still is. Realistically, we don't know what to expect from Taylor. I'm not expecting much from the little we've seen and due to all of the injury issues. At this point, if he contributes it's a bonus, and if not, we should have enough options where it's not a huge deal.

Which I can understand. Hopefully this time is different.
It's a Heart and Head issue, Question: How much do you want to be great? Every person can only answer that for themselves.....he could get here and coast, or just absolutely bust it like Biggie has done, he looks the part and Coach Paint must think so, we will see in 4-5 months!

This isn't remotely a concern here or is this just another angle for the Painter hater club to try?
Never a been a member of the Painter Hater Club. Just think people need to slow their role when anointing new recruits. Not for certain but an educated guess tells me the OP has never seen Ewing play in person and is basing his opinion on highlight clips. I was merely pointing out how he was all in on Taylor from day 1 and unfortunately JT hasn't shown even a glimpse of the type of talent the OP had us all believing he possessed.

It is clear from this year we are in dire need of an athletic contributor or two in our core rotation

Athleticism Upgrade #1. Nojel Eastern should be an improvement over Spike

Athleticism Upgrade #2. Then we need one from the quartet of Taylor/Haarms/Wheeler/Ewing to step up and pair with Vince at the forward spots. I love Taylor but coming back from 2 injuries is hard. My money is on Wheeler or Haarms

Daniel Ewing ('01-'02 to '04-'05) played at Duke and was on the Final Four team that Purdue beat early in the '03-'04 season in the Great Alaska Shootout (back when they still had higher-quality teams in it): http://www.purduesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/112903aaa.html

I think he's either Eden's uncle or cousin.

I figure that Ewing will have a similar output next season to what McSwain had at IU this season, except Ewing has more shooting range.

That's pretty much what I was thinking was the case. Hoping Ewing can dribble better than McSwain.

Calasan probably had more impact his first year here, but JJ had something to do with that. He was our last juco right?

Honestly, the OP opinion doesn't hold much weight for me due to his undying love of Taylor. Nothing against the poster or the kid, I just don't get excited based on his analysis.

Honestly, most of the recent JUCO players (by recent, I mean the past 20 years or so, ha) were just about as good in their junior season as they were in their senior season. Bryant Dillon is the only JUCO in that time period whose numbers went up significantly in his second season, but part of that was due to Purdue being short-handed (injuries and a season-long suspicion) and also due to Brandon McKnight's graduation. Carl Landry improved, but his numbers weren't significantly better than his first season.

If anything, some of the JUCO players have actually been less productive in their second season then they were in their first (ex.'s: Darmetreis Kilgore, Tarrance Crump).

Purdue JUCO's of the past 25 years (let me know if I am forgetting anyone from this time frame):

1. C/PF Kenny Williams ('92-'93 to '93-'94)
2. PF Roy Hairston ('94-'95 to '95-'96)
3. PG Tony Mayfield ('97-'98 to '98-'99)
4. PF/C Greg McQuay ('98-'99 to '99-'00)
5. CG Joe Marshall ('00-'01 to '01-'02)
6. SF/SG Kilgore ('01-'02 to '02-'03)
7. C/PF Chris Booker ('02-'03 to '03)
8. CG Dillon ('04-'05 to '05-'06)
9. C/PF Gary Ware ('04-'05 to '05-'06)
10. C/PF Landry ('04-'05; '06-'07)
11. PG Crump ('06-'07 to '07-'08)
12. C Chris Reid ('07-'08 to '08-'09)
13. C/PF Calasan ('07-'08 to '08-'09)
14. CF Ewing

Marshall was a transfer, from Mississippi state I believe, not a JUCO.

Not that I feel I need to answer you because you add no value to these boards but I will to give more insight into what I feel and know.

Um Taylor at Rutgers showed his talent and it also has shown in practice...he will overcome his injuries and show out and the rest of you will love his effort and passion. I can understand your negativity because your like most Purdue fans that are negative until we win and don't invest in the process, but then bask in all the glory when these kids do well.

I have seen Ewing play twice in person and I feel he will step in and do well at Purdue next year getting minutes behind V. Edwards and Taylor, giving Taylor more minutes at the 5 spot behind Haas and Haarms.

I wouldn't post something if I was reaching, so slow your roll and add value here instead of being a negative nelly.......

Plus I think he has grown another inch in last 6 months and added 10lbs.....could be just someone padding stats, but noticed he is listed at 6ft 9in now.....

Also saw Ondigo is listed at 6ft 11in now on 247.......

I guess you never know until they show up at Purdue and we get the real measurements.

Nor do I get any information from your posts so the feeling is mutual.

Have a point or add value......

Since you're probably the only guy on here who has seen Ewing play live, can you give us a comparison?

Hmm probably not going to like who I compare him to, but a recent player that was very athletic in Jacob Lawson, but Ewing can pass and plays a little more heady game. Meaning he is a scraper that will do the dirty stuff like rebound and not afraid to mix it up, but can also be very unselfish and pass the ball in the open court and around the paint, but yet when given the ball, can finish around the rim with confidence.

He reminds me a little of Vito Brown from Wisconsin as well.....except Brown could step out and shoot the 3 every so often.....

I like him because he is a blue collar guy like Taylor is......both those guys on the floor next year will be the energy guys that come in a give it all when they get their minutes.

Ewing to me seems like a guy who will do any role Painter asks of him with no complaints.....IMO, which like some of you have already said means nothing to you, I think he and Taylor will be invaluable next year with their minutes.

Boiler Up.
