Following up on my not so positive, not so well received, 'we must win our last three' post. Hope this post is more likely the outcome.
Comparisons to current team and 1980 Final Four team.
Both teams started year out ranked similarly. Both teams reached #8 ranking mid season. Both teams finished February around 18th.
Both teams will or did finish worse in BT than previous year, yet with so called better teams. 1980 team finished 11-7.
Roster similarities:
Both teams have all American type 7ft centers. Carroll and Hammons. Both led their team in scoring. Both are laid back personalities. Impact- pretty even.
Edmunson-Edwards. Both are sophomore slashers, similar stats, both second leading scorers. Even
Hallman- Swanigan. Both terrific rebounders, biggie more skilled, Hallman better defender. Impact-even
B. Walker- Thompson. Both ave point guards. Walker senior leader, more heady play. Impact edge to Walker.
Morris- Davis. Both good defenders, Morris lot better scorer. Impact edge Morris.
Bench. Benson- Haas. Haas wins this easily
Stallings- Mathias Too close to call
Rosie Barnes- Hill. Hill has a greater impact on team.
Scearse, S Walker vs Stephens, Cline. Cline and Stephens more skilled but much less physical and toughness. Overall Impact pretty even.
Coaching
Rose vs Painter. Rose went to two nit finals and two Final Fours...nuf said.
The similarities of these two teams are quite remarkable when you compare rosters, how their seasons have played out. 1980 team received a 6 seed on a 3rd place 11-7 BT more balanced schedule. They defeated in order a 11, 3, 2 and 4 seeds to reach final four.
I hope history keeps repeating itself for the Boilers. Only this time I hope our centers baby hook goes down at the end and we head to the Championship game.

That team caught lighting in a bottle & peaked at the right time. I always thought one of GK's team would do that, but never did.... hopefully this years team will.

Just for the record I received my online Gold and Black Express at 3:30pm est today.

Great thread!
That 1980 team holds a special place in my memory. They began that wonderful FF run as I was finalizing my decision to attend Purdue. Kevin Stallings was a huge high school legend in southwest Illinois where I grew up, and it was pure magic watching him, joe Barry, Hallman, & company march through the tourney that spring. ...
IIRC, Purdue is the last-ever third place winner in NCAA tourney history.

I never saw that Final Four team, so I can't speak on that. However, the 6 seed is the best possible outcome for this team. I would much rather be a 6 than a 4 or 5. Potentially facing the 2 seed in Sweet Sixteen round is much more favorable than the #1 seed - even in a year with so much parity.

Great comparison! Unfortunately, as you pointed out, if this year's team faulters, it will be due to:
1. PG
2. Coach
Hope the rest of the cast can overcome!

ya i just have this bad feeling we are gonna end up on the 5 seed of death line.

I agree I would rather play a team like Iowa in round of 32 and then play a team like MSU in the sweet sixteen compared to playing Oklahoma in the sweet 16. Its all about the draw I still believe this team can go deep.
