Interested in learning a bit more about Trey. I have gotten a pretty good look at Furst during the U19 games and a lot of video and feel I have a good read on him. I know very little about Trey and have not seen much tape on him at all. Trey appears to be very athletic more so than Caleb, but I think Caleb is a good to great athlete at his size. Because I have some experience with my own kids, Trey may lack some confidence, but seems like the type of kid that when the light goes on, look out. Looking forward to hearing from those that have seen Trey play.

Very talented...huge upside...I would not say that he lacks confidence, but, more a matter of not understanding how truly good he is...or can be.

To your point...when the light does go on...look out indeed. He can shoot, pass, rebound...athletic enough to be good defensively...another guy that does not generally try to do too much, and, that just wants to win.

As much as we don't want them to be, they are freshmen. Maybe Furst is more comfortable with his skill set?

I agree with that...but, that is not to say that Trey is not/will not be...and, that does not account for what has happened with his time on campus...Caleb had the added benefit of U19...but, I have to think the time on campus since summer has really benefited Trey as well.

Caleb is more capable of contributing and likely to contribute early...but, it won't shock me even a little if Trey were really good from the outset.

The biggest adjustment probably for both is just playing consistently against guys their own size...and, that have talent...but, both have a lot of high level experience in that regard already that will benefit them.

But wasn’t TKR more lauded going into these games? If not for his injury we probably would be talking more about him now?

He was...and, he may have more upside in his game still...maybe he translates better at the next level...maybe it was because Furst did not get the attention/credit for playing at a really small school...but, anyone that has seen him play at a high level in AAU, watched the All-Star series, or, followed him with U19...the guy just knows how to play, and, knows how to win.

I am not sure that Trey is not ultimately going to be better...but, that has more to do with what he does with what he has than any sort of knock on Furst...Furst is REALLY good...bottom line, both guys are very talented and both guys make Purdue A LOT better...short-term, and, long-term.

If you could not tell with my original post, Furst is a done deal for me. Gillis could not have made a bigger mistake, he may never get his job back. I am not a furst fan boy, just looking at reality. Caleb brings the size advantage. If furst can hit the outside shot, he is going to play a lot.

Noticed he was 3-3 from deep in the scrimmage with Providence.

I see what you’re saying but I wouldn’t write Gillis off just yet. He has a lot of experience with the system and plays to win while seemingly knowing where to be. He may have a hard time winning the starting spot back and he may never do so but I see him playing a lot of minutes at both the four and the three. I think he’s the better 3 point shooter of the three as well.

Pretty awesome problem to have for us. We have Furst who plays high IQ ball, Trey who has a high ceiling and a bulldog like Gillis.

Gillis had solid number in the scrimmage as well.

Furst can knock down 3's...not his strength by any means, but, he is quite capable...and, in light of it, he can stretch the floor/create spacing (more of a bonus in that he is a solid passer and can feed the post as well).

Gillis made a huge mistake...and will pay a heavy price...but, he is also someone that was a key component and contributor a year ago, and, he is very likely to remain one this year as well. His minutes may be down (and, maybe not in that he will play some at the 3 likely as you suggested), but, he is too good at what he does to not play and contribute. It is a true luxury if it becomes an issue that he is not getting minutes or on the floor.

I am not down on Gillis, think highly of him.

Id rather gillis play some small forward time, and eat up isaiahs or mortons minutes if Furst and Kaufman are as advertized.

Both of these guys are absolute studs and I believe they will both be in the top 8 for PPG and top 5 for RPG for the team this year.

I do not see Gillis playing the 3 much. I just don't.
Anyone who wants to see Gillis take away minutes from Morton- I believe your view will be different by the end of this season. Morton is a very good player and the glue that this team needs to reach it's full potential

Gillis might have trouble guarding the 3. No experience there at all. And Painter values a player's defense first.
CMP discussed this a little on his radio show Monday, saying that everyone (except Zach) wants to play the position number lower than theirs (5's want to be 4's, 4's want to be 3's, and so on). He said most times it doesn't work out defensively, but he did mention how impressed he was with Furst with switching on the defensive end in the U19.

I really haven't watched TKR play much, but here's my possible comparison to a player that improved a ton over his years in the B1G -- Keita Bates-Diop from O$U. They seem similar from what little I've seen. Of course, KBD ended up being player of the year, but TKR looks to have that kind of talent. It may take some time to show, though.

With all of the speculation on minutes and combinations it looks like this years rotation may end up similar to last years except Furst may start at the 4 and Gillis and TKR may be competing for the backup minutes Wheeler provided last year.

Furst will play some high post in his career.

I remember when Aaron Wheeler arrived and Painter told him that he want him to develop into a combo forward. It didn't work out.

Aaron Wheeler was definitely a confusing type player for me. He had NBA caliber athleticism, seemed to be a great dude and teammate. But for whatever reason just never lived up to what I thought was limitless potential.

Gillis is 6ft 6 though. Playing some sf seems reasonable. I like to think he has regained some mobility and speed too since last season. Wheeler could barely even dribble, people wanted the versatility of him playing the 3 (wolegab mostly) his opinion hardly counts though. I hope Morton is better like you say, and the glue guu etc. But as of last season Gillis is an upgrade over Morton/Isaiah. Its gonna be a battle for minutes, plenty of good players.

Not so sure. Sasha and Newman can play the three. They are both 6'5". Is Gillis really a better choice offensively (ball handling, shooting) or defensively (guarding the perimeter) than these guys? If Gillis is playing the three we'll already have two guys 6'9" plus on the court to rebound the basketball underneath and I'm not so sure Gillis is quicker to the ball for long rebounds than either Sasha or Newman. I just don't see the upside unless there is an injury. I believe Painter said Gillis was moved to the three in practice when Newman was out for a short spell, so I'm sure he's capable but is he the best alternative if everyone is healthy?

I agree with you here. I'd much rather see Newman playing the 3. He's a better ball handler, better shooter, and is tall and quick enough to guard an opponent's 3.

I'm not sure if he's an upgrade over anyone, but I would like to see him develop at the 3. Talented, athletic, strong, and he may be the best hustle player on the team, which can cover up for some deficiencies.

I was never a fan of Wheeler! Period !!! and said so many times! I did say he would be better playing the 3 if all he ever wanted to do was shoot the threes because he was not strong enough to play inside like the normal 4 should be. I’m not a huge fan of Gillis at 6’6 being a pf either. I believe a pf should be an inside force and rebounder! And if you can’t do that there are three places for you - the 3 spot if you are a good perimeter shooter and have speed. The bench if you can’t rebound and can’t shoot. Or the stands sitting and watching the game. The only reason I even suggested Wheeler play the three was because I said with tre and eden he would never see any minutes at the 4. And he was not going to start despite all his vast experience. And if he wanted to actually see any minutes he’d have to learn how to play the 3. Obviously he couldn’t play the three or the 4. I’m going to say the same thing about Gillis! With Furst, Kaufman and Tre, Gillis isn’t going to see any minutes at the 4. It’s nothing against Gillis. I just believe the other three are all better! And Edey will take over more minutes at center. And it’s likely that Kaufman may actually see time at the three in the future if he wants to see any playing time. I also said I don’t like seeing shooting guards playing the 3. And start spelling my name right or I may decide to post most often! I take offense at being called names! And no. I doubt it was a typo! Because the same spelling has been used many times before. I’m tired of the name calling!

I get that newman and sasha are solid 3s. I think you are missing what im saying. Im suggesting Newman playing more 2, bumping either isaiah or morton out of the line up, Whoever is worst between the two. Jaden and Hunter can handle playing point gaurd. I think you gotta get your best players on the court, and Gillis >Isaiah/Morton

Also, wole, you were the biggest fanboy of wheeler, just stop. You couldn't stop talking about how he would go pro after his sophmore year.

What does Tre have to do with minutes at the 4? Tre is a 5 and only a 5

You’ve now used your monthly allotment of exclamation points.

Both freshman learning. We all knew Caleb was going to be solid coming in. There is no shame in a Frosh not playing much on a top 10 team their true freshman year.
will the frosh think that now in the current world?

This is what I was trying to get to. In my mind Kaufman was an obvious red shirt. Great talent, needs to mature a bit.
