Trey Kaufman and Caleb Furst

Ill take this as a positive, and that Gillis has gotten better.
Gillis was already solid in his role last season. Glue guy, rebounder, defensive presence, toughness, effective screener - all things that this team needs. Able to hit free throws and knock down open shots. I'll take that package on this team with any amount of improvement.

If you could not tell with my original post, Furst is a done deal for me. Gillis could not have made a bigger mistake, he may never get his job back. I am not a furst fan boy, just looking at reality. Caleb brings the size advantage. If furst can hit the outside shot, he is going to play a lot.
You've already forgotten how impressive Gillis was last year. Dont' give a rats hiney what his statistics are, the guy makes your team better.
I think the same of Furst, but you're wrong if you think Gillis is sitting the bench.

I think you may have missed my follow up post on Gillis. Think very highly of him and his play. Was just highlighting how costly a screw up can be on a team with lots of talent.

I think everyone loves what Gillis brings to the table, while also understanding that a dynamic creator at the 4, like Rob or Vince, can take CMP’s offense to another level.

I'm a big fan of the stretch 4, but there are multiple ways to construct an effective roster. The main thing that stretch 4 gives you is the ability to spread the floor with perimeter shooters. Mason isn't the prototypical stretch 4, but he doesn't necessarily have to a dynamic playmaker like Rob or Vince. Him playing the 4 is a much different scenario than trying to put Trevion there, for example. You have enough of an outside shooting threat to open up the paint and get the defense in rotations (35% = above team average). Plus, you get the grit, floor burns, rebounding, etc. Probably a similar mix with Caleb at the 4. The other key to this is having capable shooters at the 1-3 positions, and a dynamic creator guard, something we didn't always have with those teams Rob and Vince were on. I guess what I am saying is you can end up with the same skills on the court but packaged differently.

I think what we didn't know until recently was it looks like Furst is going to be a capable stretch 4 and be good enough defensively to guard opposing 4's whereas guys we have tried in the past at the 4- mainly Swanigan and Trevion- were not.

By the way-

I know IUHillybilly is not on here anymore, at least not by that name, but if he were I wonder what he would be saying about his projected starting lineup that featured Trevin at the 4 and Edey at the 5 and his assertion that those 2 would see significant time on the floor together.

Wrong so far

He won B1G Freshman of the Week at least once. And the B1G was loaded with great freshmen.

I think the issue with Gillis last year, is that he had a low usage rate, often didnt take open shots, so we didnt often see mistakes. He played well for a freshman did the little things, but he has his shortcomings and was often outmatched. A fair analogy is he is the the clarinet player, the plays very softly, almost so that you cannot hear him. So when a mistake is made, its very quiet and unnoticable. He was solid as a freshman last year, but we need him to be able to step up and be a bigger threat on offense consistently. We will find out soon.

gotcha. There are some dismissing him because of Furst's emergence. Much as I like me some Caleb game, Gillis still has a large role I think. Even moreso now with TKR putting on the shirt.

The team has PLENTY of offensive threats. : see; redshirt/ TKR
The LAST thing this team needs is Gillis hunting shots. (which he won't do).
No.
Just, no.

I think that Furst will remain the starter, but Tre Williams and Mason Gillis has to be the best backup frontcourt in all of college basketball.

I think once Gillis comes back and gets into the groove of things, you will see him get more minutes than Furst due to experience. Really, I think Furst is a taller version of Gillis. Gillis has the benefit of two years of experience and is probably a better shooter at this point. Furst is younger but I don’t know if I see any differences in the way they play, so far since the season just started, besides Furst being taller. Both have a nose for the ball, can shoot outside when needed, and don’t care about doing the dirty work. Both players other programs would love to have as well.

Mason Gillis is a good player and a valuable member of the team. But Caleb Furst is a better player now and a future star. He's going to be more and more difficult to get out of the lineup as the season progresses.

Everyone needs blows. They don't want Furst playing 30 minutes. Probably 25 TOPS and that's 15 for Gillis. Maybe closer to 50/50 by Big 10 time.
I doubt that the talent gap is much between them at THIS point. Gillis experience making up for Caleb's length. Both very savvy players.

Pundits and fans are talking about the combined scoring, rebound, blocks, staeals, and assists from Tre and Zach at the C position. I expect we will be doing the same for the PF position.

Honestly, I had no idea Caleb Furst was going to go so damn fundamentally solid. I try to think of mistakes & very few things come to mind. A misjudged dunk and a couple guys scoring on him… a single missed free throw? One turnover (think of how many freshman struggle with TOs)… I can’t remember much. And then I think of what he did well… he’s playing like 25mpg or something, right? And he’s just been so stout and consistent for a freshman, holding down that role… playing hard, taking the high percentage scoring opportunities that come to him, good defense, just that one turnover.

And I was very impressed with Gillis last year & expect him to be improved. He gets under opponents’ skin & we need that. He has this visible drive to win that doesn’t let up when things start going wrong. We are stacked at the 4 and 5 folks!
