Three Plays Define This Game

1) We drop the opening drive pass!
2) On our 4th down play in Ovt. our right side receiver was held the entire route and intended receiver was hooked and turned while trying to catch the pass. Zebras BLEW both fouls.
3) Missed assignment by our D allowed a wide open NW to score the winning TD.

Hate to be Mr obvious here but it could be that Walters is absolutely terrible. This is the 7th straight loss and you’re blaming the damn refs?

Missed assignments all day. The D misses them more frequently than makes them.

The good news is that Nobody’s going to want to poach Thineman after this year…he’s been truly awful.

We did not lose this game because of the refs. Unless they were for some reason telling our defenders to not cover the wide open Running backs for the entire game.

I think the plays that define the game are the 4 -3rd-and-1 or 3rd-and-2 we failed to convert. Northwestern was the opposite and only had one drive end when we stopped them on 3rd-and-2. Some questionable play calling with one on 4th down where the oline pulled and Mockobee ran right into the defender (maybe busted play) and then the 2 yard pass on 4th-and-4 with the defender draped on him.

That’s the scheme. We don’t have the extra man it seems to cover a QB or RB!
Yeah it happened 5 times in the game where northwestern got a first down or TD on RB receptions coming out of the backfield without being defended. And their RBs had 11! Catches. We only keep one safety back and he seemed to never pick up the RB. They asked Walters about this (well the last two plays in OT where they just ran that twice) and he said guys weren’t in the right places. You think by OT we schematically get this figured out.

Both the OT were on yanni but the first one he got baited by the WR showing a jet sweep and the second one he was spying the QB as well. They tricked us and we fell for it. Why they didn’t just have Yanni 100% on the RB is mind boggling, I can’t imagine he screwed up that bad twice in a row if he was told whatever you do spy the RB.

This defense hasn't been able to contain on the perimeter all season. It started with Notre Dame and hasn't stopped. There's just no one there.

Bro. It started game 1 of season 1 for Walters. It’s not the players…the scheme just doesn’t account for the “extra” guy out of the backfield. It’s a broken defense.

And the lack of speed at LB doesn’t help either. This scheme is totally dependent on having elite athletes making plays. We dont have them and the results are painful. Opposing OC basically gets a week off when they play us.

Yup. Just run man beater concepts and outside runs and you’ll eventually get us. No matter how bad the team we are playing is.

I think everybody in the stadium and everybody watching knew who the more talented team was but coaching matters and scheme holds this below average group back immensely

I don’t understand how basic this is. You have 11 guys on defense and we keep one guy playing CF. If you rush 4 you’ve got a guy for everyone and thieneman. When you rush 5 you have Thieneman spy the QB or you rush in a way to contain the QB.

On the first play of Ot they played a zone and Yanni seemed to be covering “the ball” out of the backfield and that was 3 players, we fell for it.

But the second play Heldt, Yanni, and Thieneman were all watching the QB the entire play and none of them reacted to the RB sweeping out. Unbelievable.

I said this after the Illinois game but it’s a scheme predicated on each player going 1v11 every play. No teamwork. Every man for themselves. This D scheme would fail in the NFL it’s so bad. It won’t change until he’s out of town!

Worst defense in the Big10. Only qualification to justify Walters hire was that he knows defense. He has been exposed as a total fraud.
