Three key takeaways from Purdue’s 99-41 exhibition win over Grand Valley State:

💫 Trey Kaufman-Renn has arrived
🔒 Rookie guards turn defense in offense
❓ Big man questions remain

I was initially concerned who was going to fill that role that Lance Jones did last year, and I think the early answer is Gircarri Harris. That guy has some good handles! Colvin looked sharp too and Loyer looks like he spent some time in the weight room. Keep this group together and happy and the future looks really bright! I think Jacobsen will eventually be the guy in the middle, (apparently, he is still growing taller) but time will tell.

Going to be a fun year to root for the Boilermakers! Don't be shocked if they peak later in the year and surprise a lot of folks on the national level. Jacobsen is young, but he's for real. Colvin, Cox, and Harris are ready now! Heide needs to be more aggressive when he gets the ball. Berg, Furst & Jacobsen can combine for 15 & 10 which should be enough with our 5 talented guards and TKR.

I did notice Will Bergs screens Cox scored 7 points late in the game simply because of Berg's screens. Raleigh and Daniel are great, but they need time to develop. Berg took no prisoners on both ends of the court. Daniel was man handled by a 6'7 division 2 player and looked the part of a freshman. I read everyone saying on twitter that CJ was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think he is great but man it's early. I think this season is Purdue's for the taking if we crown Wille the starter at the 5. At least until Daniel and Raleigh get where they are going. TKR is giving me Carl Landry flashbacks not a bad player to be compared to Carl logged a decade in the NBA then 2 years in China as the highest paid player.

Other than the foul shooting Landry would be a great TKR comparison. Such an efficient scorer.

I like all 5 of our guards quite a bit. Cox is kinda Wille Dean like in offense, but plays better D.....so far. Had a nice pass last night, but the ball sticks with him sometimes to much. But when he is on....can you blame him?? Harris is a joy to watch on both sides. Big physical guard that is so tough. Smith is going to win us alot games in a likely B10 MVP campaign. Love watching Loyer & Colvin's shot, so pure. Loyer is great at drawing fouls, and has even more ways to score this year. Alot to like in these guards. Due to so many great tools, I wonder if CMP will go small ball on occasion, situationally.

I don't remember who said it, but someone called CJ a Carsen clone if Carsen played Defense on twitter last night and from Germany Carsen replied, " So I didn't play defense?" I wish people understood how much pride our former players still have for Purdue. He was just being sarcastic nothing sticks on him he just enjoys life. One of my favorite people. We will see with Wille LOL!

Agree here. I think we take our lumps early on (finally lose a few games in non conf) and start to get it together in January. I think paint will allow the first to play through mistakes (he may not have a choice 😂) to be ready for March and next year.

I’m not going to read too much into the warm up games - I’ll have more of an opinion as we start playing real games. We have had guys who could put up numbers against scrubs and disappeared when the talent went up.

The 5 spot is going to be our weak link all season which was expected after losing the 2 time NPOY. Berg probably has the advantage because of age and strength. Jacobsen will get plenty of time to learn - how quickly he adjusts and changes, is what I’m watching.

I think it's cool a Purdue legend 5 years out is paying attention to an exhibition vs GVSU while playing in Germany. A lot of coaches try to sell it, but Painter/Keady really have built a family.

Hopefully another recruit from Houston making a decision soon notices the lifetime bond you get with this program.

Man I am bummed I forgot it was on. I know it wasn't against anyone we shouldn't have steam rolled, but still.

But in your defense it was on big ten plus and had worse announcers than a fifth grade morning show.

Landry was just on the @Boilerball podcast with Elliott and Rob. Highly recommend. Carl has a big personality.

It would be a miracle if TKR was as efficient as Landry, he would need to up his TS 10%

Unlikely but not a miracle. Defensively he’s already where Landry was as a Jr. Based on what we heard how he played last summary without Edey and then validated against creighton, scrimmages, and the other night, third team all big ten like Landry was his jr year seems achievable if not probable.

Landry being only 3rd team all B1G was criminal but probably because efficiency wasn't as valued back then. People are forgetting just how good he was.

Watched the whole game on You Tube today, Boiler football therapy session.

Berg looks pretty good, should start and be solid at 5 for bees swarming around him, DJ spells him some

TKR looks great. While Heide’s stats were nil, he was active and looks strong, his time will come at 3/4.

The 5 guys at 1-3 look great, CJ and Harris strong

Furst knows the plan and is dependable off the bench

Let’s see how they run Monday!

Painter always says players figure out who plays and I truly believe that but he’s got his work cut out on finding a rotation that works! Biggest question mark is who plays the 5??
The rotation may take some time to figure out and every game may differ but this team has some really good depth to play with rotations throughout the season. Of course the freshman class has work to do but I really like what they all bring to the team!

Painter always says he was going to see another kid play but Cj ended up catching his eye so he started recruiting him. In his most recent post game interview Painter said he got tired of waiting on another player to make a decision so he ended up offering Cj and doesn’t regret that decision and I believe he is right…Cj is a dude!
Does anyone recall the player Painter was waiting on before he pulled the trigger on Cj?

Perry who went to UK. CJ is going to be very good and add defense and is ready to contribute right away…not sure Perry can/will do that. But very excited to see his development over his career.

Being out of the country I never got to see the last game...until yesterday on Youtube. Yes, Daniel is pretty weak. He could be effective in help D on the rim where he leaves is man and goes in space as well as a perimeter shooter AND FT shooter. Being the only game I've been able to see, Berg shows more ability now and do believe he will get much better with reps and the comfort zone. Daniel, may be getting major minutes down the road, but is at a physical disadvantage at this time that can be a problem.

In the one game...I really liked Cox. He is the type of guard that has beat Purdue in the tourney...not afraid to take a big shot and certainly capable of making it. He also seems quicker on the ball D than Gicarri, but Gicarri has the strength to be physical if allowed against a more physical guard and a good defender as well. Excited to see them Monday since Youtube has been it for me.

I was NOT able to access this site while out of the country the month of October. I could access the ON3 though. Do you extend my membership a month or what?

Yes! I couldn’t remember if it was Perry or someone else, thank you.
It’s always interesting to keep an eye on the guys that end up coming to Purdue because of other recruits picking a different school instead. Purdue has got some good ones lately and Cj looks to be on that list!

I was in Italy, but admit it was tough to miss the games. I wanted to stream the exhibition, but was in Orvieto and they were struggling with the Internet dropping at the time...and I was 6 hours ahead. Soooooo, I found it on youtube and watched it when I got back. I was able to make the game last night and will be there Friday and from now on I hope...

I love it too. And both frosh guards are impressive. But there's 20 combo guards that "can handle it" for every "true" pg out there.
Here is the thing...Braden could be a good 2 guard if his clone was at the 1. I said this a couple of years ago that he can score. Last night he had 15 assists at half and had a few players not fumbled the ball on lobs or actually knocked down some easy ones he could have had 20 assist at half. 20...that is amazing. 2 more boards I think he had a triple double...

Would love to see Colvin get more time at the 3 than Harris at this point. His offensive game might be more important than the D and/or ball handling in many instances. I also think Colvin looked a bit better at entry passing. Maybe I’m crazy 🤷🏼‍♂️

When he's on....he will get minutes.
No worries there.

Other than those times, Harris is more complete according to CMP who starts him. Plenty of minutes for our 5 guards. Flip side is when they aren't playing as well...CMP has great alternatives @ the 1-3.

Painter has shown that he likes to have a least one early sub that can score cold off the bench. Colvin has that ability, so he may be that guy in the rotation more times than not. Even with that, he still may get starters minutes depending on matchups, game needs, and how he's playing.

He has also said the type of D played against Purdue will be an input for playing time most likely
