Although I can find agreement with your intention, I disagree with the effectiveness of such. First, there are many parents that won’t do what you state. Second, children go to school with an idea that a teacher holds the knowledge and the student is to absorb that knowledge. Students are conditioned to that understanding by getting good grades when they regurgitate or parrot back what the teacher wants. This doesn’t stop and students then learn that what is read and believe it to be true fitting in with others and getting good grades as a resale on absorbing all in front of them. Students/children really don’t have the relevant background to make informed decisions until much later in life and so all they have is their previous exposure for a basis. Many students spend much more time in school and under the influence there, than in meaningful discussions with parents…should parents provide that discussion. Along with that many start to think the teacher knows more than the parent…and in a few cases that is true thereby undermining the credibility of parents.
John Dewey set out to use school for social reform. Teacher unions, ed skool and administers continually receive info in pedagogy and ideals much different than what many parents want. Most parents have no idea what is going on in school. Parents rarely get involved enough in education to understand this. Most parents only get involved if they do when the child does poorly in school and so no questions arise if the grades are good. I could go on and on in this area.
There are legitimate reasons for political gain that textbook adoption is filtered with acceptance of multicultural approval. There are legitimate reasons why teachers, students and administrators are driven to a political view. The democrats understand this and why they are so heavily invested in such…because their talons have hold of the future for many. Some republicans are just "now" becoming aware.
