I have already accepted the likelihood that just like his mentor, Painter will not ever make a final four. And barring a crazy bracket, it will not happen this year. But I will still cheer for Purdue because that's my school.

Painter is a good coach, and no matter what, he will be at Purdue for at least 3-4 more years, maybe a lot longer. But if you are expecting anything drastically different than what you've seen over the last 12 years, I think you will be disappointed. Just my opinion.

Now someone pull the string in the back of Schmeckelmeat's neck...

While I respect your opinion, I disagree with Painter never making a FF. We simply have no idea whether he will or won't. Anyone that says otherwise is just speculating.

Now what I do look for is that things keep progressing and so far they are. Yeah the loss stinks but overall I still think it's trending up.

Realistically though as you said CMP isn't going anywhere any time soon. No Ad in the country will fire a coach that is consistently ranked and consistently makes the tourney. Just my 2 cents.

oh I freely admit that Its certainly speculation on my part. (Is there anything else on this board?) I am just not going to count on it happening, though it's certainly possible. I think 2010 was his chance, and sadly it didn't happen.

If Swanigan doesn't go pro later this year, then next year I think we have a legitimate shot. For it to happen this year, it is going to take an extraordinary effort from everyone.
We can't play scared. We have to play confident and aggressive or it won't happen.

LOL!!!! hopefully they put him back in his box! On another note.....This team is so frustrating to watch at times.....At times they really look unstoppable and look like an Elite 8 team! Then again when your losing to the bottom half of the teams in the CONF(in KEYSTONE fashion) it does appear to take on the past 12 years under Painter! All about the draw in the tourney......

I don't think Purdue has played scared, except maybe for the first half at Loisville.

But U do think that Purdue has failed to March its opponents' intensity in all three of its B1G losses.

Inclined to agree. Just the culture he created. Only thing that changes my opinion is if he brings in a PG that can play shutdown defense and has some balls. Chris Kramer was probably the main reason he went to two Sweet 16s.

Often overlooked is his current staff. His first few years he lost several assistants to head jobs/better jobs. Now, not so much.

Painter is probably a slightly above average coach and his teams, with the exception of the Baby Boilers, have been slightly above average. Make the tournament, win a game or two, and go home. Recruiting? Again, probably above average, but not by much. He cannot get the stronger Indiana kids Purdue needs to be a powerhouse program. Butler has kicked our arse for the past decade and now ND is competitive with us. All of this was OK with Burke. I hope the new MB expects more.

We should at least let the season play out before throwing in the towel. Izzo has on more than one occasion taken a team with some bad B1G losses to the Final Four because they peaked in March instead of January. We on the other hand, have had several teams that peaked in January/February and fizzled in March. Maybe this is the year we peak in March for once?

Also, I'm not sure I would say so definitively that Painter will never make a Final Four because:
1. He has spent most of his career with a totally incompetent AD. Lets see how things change with a real AD.
2. I believe that college basketball has become a perimeter game. We have mostly had below average, unathletic guards since Etwaun left - coupled with highly skilled but somewhat immobile big guys. In two seasons, we will have an ELITE backcourt with Carsen and Nojel and more athletic, mobile big guys. The Purdue style of play that we have seen the last several years will look very different.

Anything's possible!

Nebraska played as well they could so kudos to them BUT yes, the same types of things that typically hinder (i.e. a singular defense) or befall Purdue in close games under Painter (lack of composure from him and his players, particularly after the obvious #1 option was successfully defended: team didn't seem prepared for the secondary options to make a play, etc.) happened again today.

The AD doesn't have anything to do with his overall coaching. The AD is related to how long Painter's tenure will be.

He means the harmful effects of Morgue's penny wise-pound foolish clownery.

Like getting outbid by friggin' Clemson for Rick Ray.

Or making Matt fold himself into a Festiva for a recruiting visit.

Yeah right now we're sort of a team with a fork in a world of soup, to paraphrase Noel Gallagher.

Thoughts which are probably meaningless as I am quite down because of this loss. Strike is afraid to shoot. Team relies too much on Biggie even when he is not playing his best. Maybe could have waited till after Nebraska game to dismiss Basil. If I were on this team it would have upset me (and my game) to have a friend dismissed. When Vince is not playing well team is in major trouble. Team will not win regular season championship but maybe tournament.

Some AD's would. And define "consistently ranked"...

2016-2017- consistently ranked
2015-2016- consistently ranked
2014-2015- Pretty sure never ranked
2013-2014- Never ranked
2012-2013- Never ranked
2011-2012- Rarely ranked if ever- 10 seed
2010-2011- Consistently ranked
2009-2010- Consistently ranked
2008-2009- Consistently ranked
2007-2008- Ranked as the season progressed
2006-2007- Never ranked
2005-2006- Never ranked

Maybe half the time we have a ranked team in CMP's 12 years. That isn't "consistent" to me. This year we are in the 20-25 range currently, so assuming we lose Biggie and considering the lackluster recruiting class we have coming in, I don't think we will see the top 25 much next year.

You're right. They haven't played scared. That's just one of the tired cliches that get thrown around here when people who don't understand basketball get emotional and try to act like they understand.

What they have done is turned the ball over a bunch of played very poor defense at times.

Rick Ray? Festiva? So that's the key to losing to Little Rocks.

Who was Keady's AD when he won three straight Big Ten championships?

Well since having a good AD doesn't seem to make a difference, maybe we should just hire a search firm to hire all of our coaches and let Nancy Cross run the rest of it.

Answer the question ... who was the AD when we were winning the Big Ten three straight years?

How could that happen with a "bad" AD?

Sorry to offend, Mrs. Burke.

Where did I mention B1G championships?

You won't be mentioning Big Ten championship this year ... again.

We spend $100 million on Mackey, double salaries and wind up in the second division for the next three years.

Yeah, that's the AD's fault.

4,000 posts and zero intellect.

Ouch Mrs. Burke!

Again, B1G championships aren't the topic of this thread.

And to your point, the hay was in the barn for those crappy teams well before Mackey's Catch-up Renovation was finished in 2011. Ask someone who knows hoops what I mean by that.

I think our team lacks "winners." Mediocre at best. Winners find a way to win.

Yep, tell that to the all the other top 20 (including top 10 and top 5) teams that have dropped games this past week or two. This is D1 hoops and teams lose period. Just like I told FoolMeOnce I will tell you: Please go be a Duke or UK fan if you want to never lose, and you'll be disappointed sometimes there too. Don't spout some bullshit like our team lacks winners. It's just a shitty thing for a fan to say much less believe. If you think that about Biggie & Dakota & Carsen & PJ & ..., you just are not paying attention. Sometimes "winners" lose a game. Like I said, just move on if you're going to blab some utter tripe like that.

Nah. Without biggie he will HAVE to play haas. sometimes I think it's better when he has less choices. We'll still be good next year.
