Swanigan thoughts

Hmmm...He says he's a forward. He practices as a forward. But, I guess I'll take your word for it.
He actually practices as a center against AJ and Haas. Hammons has spoken about it in several interviews. Just because he calls himself a PF doesn't make him one. With Basil, Vince, and potentially Caleb, he will only see the floor as a center or possibly not at all.

Obviously you won't admit that you're wrong, so I'll drop it after this. Did you actually watch the video I posted? He was practicing as a forward alongside Haas. He was matched up against another forward (Edwards). Yes, he played some center, but he IS a forward.

At best you're not right, we're both right and both wrong. I stand by my point that he will not play PF if Caleb commits, and would be a backup center to AJ/Haas.

GFC, he is a PF, so you are correct, however, I could see him sliding into the center spot in a few years when Haas is gone. No way he plays center this year with AJ and Haas, unless it's in mop up minutes.

Yes, if we don't get another center by then, he might have to out of necessity. Unless foul trouble, he won't play any center this year. If Swanigan comes or not, Taylor will be backing up the 4 (behind Edwards or Swanigan). Smotherman will split between backing up the 3 and 4.

If Purdue gets swanigan I don't see Taylor getting any minutes anywhere. Really this digressed, my point was that the OPs point about CS taking minutes away from Taylor is a dumb reason to not want CS.

Edwards will need a rest, too.
Yes Edwards will need a rest.....RD, Matthias, KS......will provide that. This is about getting your best players on the floor. Highly unlikely that Taylor is going to be in that group this year.....so makes no sense for him to be CS's primary backup.

I guess we'll see.

Don't really understand this crazy arguement. If Swanigan comes, everyone's playing time will be cut a smidge. That's because we will have a versatile, deep team with a bunch of match up problems for the opposition. That all sounds like a good thing to me.

Taylor has not played a minute of major college basketball. How can anyone outside of the coaching staff say that he won't play? And if Swanigan signs, do you think he'll play 40 minutes every game?

Do you see everything in absolutes? He won't play at all, or he'll play over Edwards or Swanigan? Are those the only choices?
Fine, he may get 1-5 min/game. Is that really much different? Either way, is Swanigan comes then he will have to compete with 3 other guys. For perspective, we had 3 PGs last year and BS rarely got playing time. So yes, I doubt he will play at PF much at all next year (If CS commits).

I don't see him (Taylor) playing a lot of minutes on this team regardless of the situation. Hammons/Haas have the 5 locked down barring injuries. Nobody else will see minutes here. Edwards will play 25+ minutes at the 4, with Smotherman/RayDay/Cline getting a majority of minutes at the 3/4, Cline primarily the 3 if he gets any at all. I just don't see Taylors minutes reaching higher than 15. That's if he's a solid player who plays within our system. I think without CS, Taylor is getting 5-8 mpg. He'll play against teams who use a traditional 4 more than the hybrid 4, which there are not many of anymore.

Somehow I feel dumber after reading this debate. Man, you guys need to get over arguing about how many minutes each guy will get. The news must be really slow today.

Jaquil has the body of a forward but the skills of a center. The little I saw of him last year he wasn't very impressive. We all know Painter wants a skilled forward and I'm just not sure I see him ever developing into that. Jaquil would not work well on the floor if Haas or Hammons are in so I agree he will spend his time here as a center whenever he does see action(which I agree will be minimal with or without Caleb).

Everyone's mind has been on Swanigan since his recent decision to open up recruitment. I'd love to see him as a Boilermaker just as much as anybody else here, but for a few reasons, it may not benefit us as much as people think. I believe our team is pretty loaded as is, and there is a such thing as having too many stars on one team. My worry is that landing Swanigan will take minutes away from a few players that are loaded with potential and need the experience. Guys like Taylor could get lost in the mix, and I have been really excited to see Taylor get minutes this upcoming season. Another concern is that some of our guards may see less minutes if we sign Swanigan. I say this because you can't justify keeping guys like Davis and Edwards on the bench for too long. That means Stephens, Mathias, and Cline will all fight for minutes at the shooting guard position. I'd like to see us be able to have two of those guys in at the same time as often as possible to open up the paint. It's simply hard to do that when you have to give so many minutes to Swanigan, Hammons, Edwards, and Davis. I guess what I'm really trying to point out here is that Purdue will have a great season regardless, and there are plenty of guys that will benefit from not getting Swanigan. Having said that, it would still be nice to get an All-American. As a Purdue fan we should just sit back and enjoy all of this because no matter how it plays out, we will be a very good team!
.
I could care less about Swanigan either way. He's looking for the best deal....he can go to UK or IU for all I care. Painter has enough talent to win big the way it is.
