Assuming that a healthy Braden and Loyer start every game, who starts the most games at the third guard/wing spot?

Mayer will lead the second group with Jacobson Murphy Harris West/Bentor as they wear down opponents with 2 intense teams . Group B

Loyer Smith Cox TKR and Cluff will be group A
I wonder (as we all are) how much smith and Mayer will play together. As well as what the combo will be between TKR/Cluff/DJ. I also don’t be surprised if Harris and cox play close to 20 mins each a night and Harris starts over cox (probably not but again, wouldn’t be surprised).

I don’t suspect TKR and Murphy to be on the floor together much unless the other team is in a small ball lineup. I’m assuming RB redshirts to get fully 100% healthy, but if not, I wonder how he fits into the front court rotation.

But I could be 10000% wrong 😂

I would be surprised if either TKR or OC aren’t out there at all times to provide a post scoring option but maybe you’re right and they spread it out and let OM and DJ run PNR surrounded by three shooters.

I like your thinking with the depth we SHOULD have.
That said my first impulse was Mayer.
He "looks" so polished as a scorer I think it's going to be hard to relegate him to backup minutes unless he is just lost on D.
I do wonder if word of his coming impacted Myles/Cam thinking.

The easy answer is "we don't know, we'll find out in November." This is a key question going into next year, hence why it's a thread.

If I had to hazard a guess, it would be Cox. Defense comes first for Purdue and Painter, and that's why he was put into the starting lineup last year when he was. His ability to disrupt the primary ball handler on the other team was so crucial to Braden's successes on both ends of the floor. I can't see that not being the same focus next year, even with the new blood.

Honest answer; Not a flipping clue! Lots of talent and interchangeable options possible.

Two 100% starters Smith and TKR! Fletcher pretty much a shoe in unless one of the freshmen are exceptional or if Cox or Harris make a huge Sophomore jump making a poor decision not to start someone over Loyer. I’m probably in th minority that thinks Fletcher seeds PT to others unless is absolutely on fire dominating individual games.
I can see either Cluff or DJ starting. Burgess possibly red shirt since painter mentioned health concerns otherwise not sure where PT comes from.
I won’t be surprised to see Benter put pressure on the others for time at 2/3. West and Murphy, no clue. Mayer is going to see time at the expense of others and hopefully get some time spelling Smith some…

I have mixed feelings on backup with a high level octane group we will have , I feel the challenge for CMP and Company is how to mix player matchups per game we have so much talent . I also hope this allows for uptempo games where we exhaust the other team . Always room for free throw percentage to get better and lights out history making 3 pt shooting, love to lead the nation there.
As for Cam/Myles if CMP is who everyone says I think he would be honest in that they were areas he needed to get better results from.

I believe smith’s minutes will be reduced this year to provide some minutes for the three players above to have an opportunity to show who will be a starter next year

I think mayer might be in at the end of games with smith quite often. Especially close games. Hes a very strong ball handler. He may not start but finishing games cleanly hasnt always been our strong suit. Mayer cleans that up for purdue this year.

I’m curious how Braden’s chance at the NCAA assist record affects his playing time. Of course “it won’t be a factor” in Painter’s mind, at least publicly. And most won’t outwardly admit it should be a factor. But if he’s on pace several games in and starts getting national attention by pundits tracking that approach, let’s be real. The attention that will bring to the program will be hard to ignore.

Smith will no doubt have a magnifying glass on him the whole season .... how exciting. To be known not just for our big men but point guard university too!!! CMP has done a masterful job at picking unsung heros and allowing them a place to grow. How many assists does he have to avg. Per game to break record. ?

Currently 318 to tie Hurley.

To break it (games —> assists per game):

40 —> 7.98
38 —> 8.39
36 —> 8.86
34 —> 9.38
32 —> 9.96
30 —> 10.63

Smith and Cox probably starting at the 1 and 2. Fletcher is technically part of the frontcourt at 3 right? He's the SF.
Does anyone think about it that way at this point? Not sure there’s much difference between the 2 and 3 for Purdue (or most schools).

To your point though, Fletch is a pretty good ball handler but probably not as strong as the two sophomores and Mayer.

Old school wise I guess he's a SF. I really he's a SG. But it doesn't really seem to make a difference. Cox will guard 1-3 most nights anyways and Fletch will get hidden but be a primary focus on offense essentially as the SG. I know positionless basketball has taken over but maybe he's just played enough at the 3 in college to call him a college small forward. He will without a doubt be a SG at the next level. Boston will probably pick him up after next season.

Wow that seemed impossible until I looked up how many he had last year 8.7 without a true center.
AND with Colvin and Heide (no shad at them) shooting 25% from 3 for middle half of the season.

Not sure if smiths numbers will decrease, stay the same or increase.

Decrease due to Meyer and playing a tad less or Meyer distributing more.

The same due to smith being smith.

Or increase with better shooters, a lob threat, a second unit big man who is a threat to score and/or being able to be more efficient/expend energy BECAUSE he can have more rest.

Exactly. I feel he may have already intentionally engineered the Edwards-Ivey years and to a lesser extent some guys before them - specifically to counter the “Big man U” reputation which was apparently working against him when recruiting guards. Producing the most proficient PG in NCAA history would permanently dispel any notion that Purdue isn’t an ideal place for guards, if there’s anyone retaining any doubt.

Braden's minutes won't be reduced to allow others op to show, we are playing for this year. The minutes might be reduced a little to keep Braden fresh to the end. But he is going to give Braden every op to show his wares and get all the records he has an op for, he deserves that.

Cox starts. Can’t predict evolution until we see how Mayer plays defense.
He is actually a good on ball defender however he is not at CJ's level few are. I watched a few of his Fiba games he is solid in all phases of the game. I tend to agree about CJ starting at least over Mayer. We have options at every position it normally comes down to a slight edge not a huge difference IMO.
