Huge game from Caleb. And great first half from Carsen to trail only Biggie in scoring. I think his turnovers were more because he plays fast and European rules say you have to be set before you can start your dribble.
Was matta their coach?!Just noticed the minutes for Spain's starters is insane!

I am not taking anything away from our Boilers, but I think I know why this opponent gave up a big lead two nights in a row. 40, 40, 40, 35, 35!Just noticed the minutes for Spain's starters is insane!
I watched the second half and Vince didn't play that much. I am sure that Painter had his reasons.surprised vince didnt produce more

Mathias didn't shoot well, but I thought that he played really well. Swanigan looked great as the Spanish team really had nobody who could guard him or Haas.
It sounds like Carsen had a great stretch in the first half, but I didn't see too much from him in the second.
Am I reading that right, 19 steals?
This is such a complete team
I believe the first team we beat defeated Arkansas. That at least is a high major program. Are we great or is this not great competition?
I remember us having some trouble in Australia. Kind of wish it was the same here
The competition in the second game definitely wasn't great, but I still really liked what I saw from Purdue. Are we great or is this not great competition?

Far from a complete team. Very little quality backup at the 4/5. Taylor now in his third yr is still very limited. A big question mark about getting 10-15 mins a game if needed. Smotherman in his fourth yr is limited offensively. And could use a quality backup 3 that is 6-7 to 6-8.This is such a complete team
Reading your post is convincing me that this is a pretty complete team. Trimming the rotation to 9 will probably be tough, if that is what Painter decides to do. At the 3, Painter can go with Edwards, Cline, or Smotherman. At the 5 he can go with Haas, Swanigan, or Taylor. It will help if Carsen Edwards proves that he is ready, but I think that this is possibly Painter's most complete team.Far from a complete team. Very little quality backup at the 4/5. Wonder why Taylor and Smotherman to a lessor extent are not getting high minutes in Spain. Hard to develope quality backup if they don't get minutes now.
Don't bother. The team could win the national title and M would be here telling us that their hands are bad and they'll drop the trophy.Reading your post is convincing me that this is a pretty complete team. The problem with the Baby Boilers, at least after Calasan left, if that they had no depth on the front line after Johnson and Hummel. When Hummel went down in 2010, Purdue had nobody to go to at the 4. I would concede that 08-09 was probably more complete, however.Don't bother. I agree that this team is much better balanced than we have seen for a long while. Not sure it is more so than the peak of the baby boilers, unless , as you noted, Carsen just kills. Then they could be.
Yes. I would also say a bit more talented. That may change though. We will see soon. The problem with the Baby Boilers, at least after Calasan left, if that they had no depth on the front line after Johnson and Hummel. Nag, Nag, Nag. Have you considered that the talented players you want Painter to bring in for their last year of college ball might not want to play for a team as a backup? Foolish is adding a player that can't help you in a significant way and having him be unhappy on your bench. Having more than ten players only helps you next year, if your depth is young. No one (except Kentucky for one year) plays more than eight or nine deep. It seems that your favorite player is anyone we don't have. Don't know what you mean by being proud of shortcomings but if that is the case, at least HE can recognize them. Know what I mean?Yep, there were no quality backups at the 4 and 5 in '09-'10. That certainly wasn't the main thing that held them back from going further in the NCAA's (no Hummel, of course), but it didn't help them, either. I feel like the staff has dropped the ball by not adding (at the least) a grad transfer big (or tall frontcourt player: skillset can vary) up to this point, nevertheless another (preferably over 6') guard that can score by creating their own shot. CMP seems almost defiantly proud of having only 10 scholarship players this season. He's proud of his staff's own shortcomings. It doesn't sound like he wants to even consider adding a player or two, which is foolish since depth is important.
You seem genuinely slighted by Matt's rejection of your grad transfer recommendations.........when you spent so much time and effort researching them. Tragic. Why don't you retire from scouting, please?Yep, there were no quality backups at the 4 and 5 in '09-'10. Purdue seems to have so much depth...who will be the odd men out?
Taylor? Smotherman? Will be interesting to see the minutes of Carsen, Spike and PJ.

This where you are missing the advancement of the game. Playing Vince or Smotherman at the 4 is perfect for increasing team athleticism. It also solves our most frequent defensive matchup problem from a year ago. There's not a ton of depth at the 4 or 5 after Haas and Swanigan. There's Taylor, who's still unproven and that's it. VE and Smotherman aren't natural 4's.
How do you know they didn't pursue the top guys? And even if you get one it is risky. I think you grossly over value players whom you know nothing about (no, reading stats does not give you a full grasp of how they play) over players ON OUR TEAM who we get to watch develop year to year. It's like NFL teams that try to build with free agency...it just doesn't work. By all means keep looking if it entertains you, but you find that a John Octeus will be a rare find.Have you considered that if they would have pursued the more talented JUCO and immediately-eligible transfers, that they probably would have ended up playing starter's minutes as opposed to being backups (particularly at one of the guard positions)? Carsen Edwards is a freshman, and from the early look of things (barring injuries), he's going to be playing starter's minutes by the end of this season. You don't think they could have found 1 or 2 more newcomers like that?

Tell that to elway !It's like NFL teams that try to build with free agency...it just doesn't work.
The Broncs had a very good team then added a couple of missing pieces. They had the advantage of simply paying them lots of money as the incentive. We don't have that incentive at Purdue. Large quantity free agency additions have generally failed (for instance the redskins and more recently the Eagles). The key is good drafting and development. Parallels good recruiting and development in college hoops.Tell that to elway !
Agree. The Bronc's won that game with their defense, home grown, drafted defense for the most part. The Broncs had a very good team then added a couple of missing pieces.
