Here's a quote from the article on Bill Self at Kansas:
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. That's seven gut punches (losses to lower seeds) that Bill Self has had to take.
Kansas is often listed as one of the 4 or 5 "blue blood" schools that we would set as a goal for Purdue. I personally wish Purdue were in that category.
But when I read that stat above, it became clear to me that the pain suffered by a true Kansas fan has probably been more intense than what has been suffered by a true Purdue fan over the past 20 years.
Now, that Kansas fan has also had more moments of glory, including one national championship. So I'm not saying that the administration at Purdue should settle for mediocrity. But I am saying this:
Many people seem to think that if we just had a better coach, or better recruits, then we wouldn't have to deal with these painful losses that we suffer. Well, if you think that rooting for a blue blood school will allow you to avoid the terrible frustration of losing, then you're mistaken.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Self is one of four head coaches with at least eight No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament, but only one of his eight No. 1 teams has reached the Final Four.
