So, Haarms commits for '17

Welcome to Purdue! Let's get some weight on this kid and make him a beast in the middle

From his highlight film the kid looks pretty athletic and has a good touch around the rim with his hands. Put some meat on that body and this could be a solid pickup for a big. Welcome Matt! Time to start adding more.

Some highlights:

Some immediate thoughts:
1) I like his shooting.
2) His first year, he'll be totally tossed around by Haas (assuming Haas is still here). Should make him tougher and encourage him to put on weight
3) Apparently a smart kid (ACT 29)
4) Maybe could develop into a Frank Kaminsky type of player. (Was Kaminsky very skinny coming out of high school? He didn't really blow up until Junior year at Wisconsin.)

Here's a thought/question:
Is it easier to put on weight or to learn to shoot? I would guess the former. That is, I think it is more likely that a good shooter puts on weight than it is that a meaty athlete learns to shoot.

Kaminski was my immediate thought in watching his film. Obviously a stretch to compare to a NPOY, but a skilled seven footer is very intriguing.

Easier to put in good weight. Look at Dustin Keller for that answer. Keller absolutely blew up with the right eating plan and workout plan. Bball strength and conditioning coach is probably one of the best in the business of you look at how he has transformed Biggie in just over a year, trimmed Haas while retaining his strength and improving this flexibility. If he can put on 15 good pounds, he'll be more than ok at 240.

Just watched the video on Hammer and Rails. He has a real good stroke from behind the 3 point line. Runs very well for a big guy too. Funny but his legs look so long even for a 7'2" guy. After he makes a shot from outside he goes right to a defensive mode and guards someone. He needs some bulk but hell, I can teach him how to get that. Welcome Matt!

Wonder if all the idiots screaming about Painter's recruiting after losing Battey and Tillman will come around and post congratulations to Painter for landing a very high ceiling player.

Very pleased with this pickup. Other than possibly JJJ, Haarms has the highest ceiling of anyone on our radar. Might take him till he is an upperclassman to really shine, but could be the kind of player you design the team around.

I look forward to putting MSU and IU in Haarms' way!

Nice pun. Should be many more to come from this guy.

If he fouls easily, we might say, 'No Haarm, no foul' when we pull him out of the game.

I like the pick up. Won't be an immediate impact player but after a year or so in the program should begin to pay dividends. I like European style big men....the can usually shoot and handle the ball. I have always said Purdue is for the most part a four year program and this guy should be good by his junior and senior year.

If he gets to play behind Haas for a year, I could see him being ready his sophomore year. If not, he may not be an impact until he's a jr. or senior.

Reminds me of a lefty version of Mike Tisdale. Not a physical 7 footer, not a blue chipper. But good hands and money from 15 feet.

Welcome Matt! Does anyone know if Manley wants to be a 4? Or is his game a def 5?
I don't know...but do you ever see someone Manley's size that wants to play a 5? Everyone wants to get to the NBA where they play a smaller position. If you are going to play a 5...get them early. Course, I REALLY prefer playing two 4's and letting them both go out and inside depending on what is working...

When asked what resonated about his visit, Haarms said, "The way coach Painter talked about what we were about to do, the way they would develop me, the way he handles himself. Coach Painter is an extremely genuine guy. I believe everything he says. When he says something, you give a lot of value to what he's saying."

Sounds like this recruit liked CMP's honesty.........................hmmm.

Welcome Matt!!!!!

I think that this is a good point. Swanigan is a good example who chose Purdue in large part because Purdue had 2 seven footers. Having a 7'2" center should make Purdue more attractive to other recruits. I think that it also helps that Haarms can move outside and free up the lane because it gives his teammates room to attack inside.

I think that Haarms probably needs to bulk up before he will be effective, but he looks like a young man with a very high ceiling. It's great to see him commit to Purdue.

This kid is a project, but man the upside is off the charts. 7'2", Dutch, with an outside shot, can't help but think Rik Smits.

Welcome Matt!!!
project wouldn't be the word I would use. he is skilled and reasonably coordinated..just weak and not a great athlete at this time. He is a very solid pickup. Matt Ten Dam and Marcuis were projects originally

Gotta love the Dutch!

I guess by project I meant that it seems he isn't physically ready to go play in the B1G right now. But wow, some great raw materials to work with there. If haas stays, we won't need him much next year, so he really has 2 years to bulk up.

I am interested to see if Painter redshirts him. I'm assuming if Swanigan stays he redshirts but if Swanigan leaves maybe not?

Swanigan is gone barring something unexpected. I see him averaging 15pts and 9.5 rebounds per game and getting drafting in the first round.

I think he'll redshirt. A year focusing on bulking up and practicing against Haas will pay huge dividends if he stays around for 5 years.
