It's been a number of years but I think I remember the story as this. He taped a phone conversation with Deon Thomas about how U of I was going to give him a Blazer (car, not a jacket) and turned in Illinois to the NCAA.

If I recall the asst coach was Collins???

Jimmy Collins yeah. He was Illinois' tie to Chicago kids, then eventually coached at UIC. Passed away a few years ago.
