1: Haarms will be a big contributor this season and he’ll play a pivotal role as I think he may solidify himself as the backup post. He looked fluid and smooth and once he gets more seasoned and understands the defensive rotations, he will be a very good player. As the game went on I could see he became more comfortable on defense and you could see that in his shot blocks...I’d say he had 3 to 4.
2: Mathias is the truth this season. He may have games where he puts up 25-30 this season. He has developed more of his moves off the dribble and that’ll give him more space to operate on th arc. He looked like he may have developed himself in to a legit NBA prospect this season. Think of Kyle Korver but someone who is able to play defense.
3: Carsen Edwards will have a 30+ game this season. He just looks totally different this season with the ball in his hands and his ability to just find scoring opportunities. The summer playing on two USA teams probably jumped his development a full year. He may be the quickest player in the B1G with the ball in his hands. He also showed a better ability to get in to the lane and finish with different moves.
4: Haas has improved his low post moves to include some dribble moves when he does receive the ball further out. He still has some issues on the defense BUT I’m not sure that wasn’t just a first game bad defensive rotation.
5: Vince was a bit quiet today but that’s been Vince for four years at the start of the year. He created some good shots for himself and was just his usual Swiss army self.
6: PJ has really developed his outside shot more and that’ll be something that will probably really come in handy this year. With the starting 5 of Haas, Mathias, Vince, Boogie, and PJ...there may very well be 4 40% three point shooters THAT START this year..
7: Nojel is a freshman but his demeanor and charisma is more of an upperclassman. I doubt he gets shaken in any environment this season and he appeared to probably be the 2nd man off the bench.
8: Wheeler came in late and showed why he’ll be an absolute dynamite player once he develops and fine tunes his skills to match his athleticism. Hit a very nice three and showed some good defensive skills. He is Troy Williams athletic with a higher ceiling because of where his skills are right now.
9: I’ll say it right now...Tommy Luce will be a contributor his senior year when needed. He may end up having guys in front of him but if foul trouble stacks up at some point, Luce could be called on in a similar role to Bobby Riddell a few years ago. He had a sweet dribble drive for a layup over a post player to end the game.
10: There were some funky lineups but probably just getting some in game looks to see if they work.
11: If Taylor can come back and be healthy, don’t be surprised to see a lineup with him at the 4 and Haarms at the 5. Haarms is probably good out to 17 feet but Taylor can stretch it a bit further. Having those two on the floor with Vince, Mathias, and Carsen/Nojel is intriguing. Imagine the line up with Nojel...nobody is shorter than 6’5...that’s tall for an NBA team.
12: Ewing had an absolute highlight reel dunk...it was nice. If he can figure it out and CMP can get him there, he allows some guys to get some better rest.
13: Stefanovic needs to RS and not that it’s because he isn’t ready...the minutes just aren’t there. He has a quick release and I imagine May end up being a player like Davis and Mathias in terms of developing in to that defensive stopper/offensive skill set. An amazing late pickup and a kid who any big ten team would like to have in 2 years.
13: Eifert may end up being a 4 points and 4 rebounds a game guy this year. He moves so much on offense while off the ball, his guy will lose him and he’ll get two layups a game...just like he did today. He won’t give you much...BUT he isn’t going to hurt Purdue in any way either. He is a great off the bench player to give Vince 2 minutes of wind before a timeout comes...he’ll be a fan favorit because of his hustle and effort.

Boy, did you just make my cold rainy day down here in the mountains brighten up....lol!! So excited BB is almost here. And now on to football to finish off my Saturday Purdue Fest!!!

This is likely the deepest and most COMPLETE team Painter has had if Haarms is legit. If he can provide shot blocking/rim protection vs certain matchups. The sky is the limit, as much as I liked last years team. It was a huge and I mean huge weakness

Thanks for the notes. And I appreciate your enthusiasm, but let's dial it back a notch or two here lol.
Why? Really... Why? What's to be gained by not suggesting that we may have three 50% 3-point shooters? Johnny thinks we will and he has proven to be darned astute at evaluating.... I'm not upset with your post, just don't agree that a reasonably astute fan should not have strong positive feelings about the team. Seems like a great attitude to me.

There is nothing to be gained by agreeing with the post either. He suggested there would be 4 starters that shoot over 50% from 3. That's ridiculous. I would be ecstatic if there were one player on the team that shot 50%+ from 3. If I were betting on it, I would bet that no players shoot 50%+. No objective basketball fan would predict a college basketball player to shoot 50%+ from 3 let alone 4 players on one team.

Ok. I agree. My question was why post at all. What is the gain? Who is better after reading that post than before reading it. I just don't get why a fan would belittle another fan for a highly positive statement about the whole team.

The reason to post is because his post could persuade other readers to believe everything he said is likely. A lot of what he said is very unlikely (There is 0% chance 4 players on our team shoot 50%+ from 3). People will be very disappointed if they believe his predictions could become a reality..... Tommy Luce being a contributor by his senior year????????? LOL no way. If he is, we will finish last in the Big Ten.

I understand you wanting to protect people from disappointment, but I'm sure that most people recognize that this is just basketball. Allow a little unbridled enthusiasm.

I'm all for enthusiasm. There should be a bunch of enthusiasm with our current team, but projecting 4 players to shoot 50%+ from 3 is just plain ignorant. He loses all credibility in my book. Tommy Luce a contributor?? There is a lot that is true in the OP, but there is also very ignorant statements. Wheeler is likely to RS, and he is calling him currently more skilled than Troy Williams??

Fixed it for you.

I never meant to put 50%...that’s a ridiculous claim that most casual fans would see was a mistake...and being that I’m not just a ‘casual fan’, I would hope for a bit of leeway in that regard. Also changed to be a bit more clear in that the four starters other than Haas would be 40% from three. Add Cline in there as well and Purdue very well may have 4 regular rotation players above 40%.

Now I'm with you on those 4 shooting 40%+. Thanks for clarifying.

Guess I have to clarify for those that are topical readers only:

Luce comment: Here it is...
‘...He may end up having guys in front of him but if foul trouble stacks up at some point, Luce could be called on in a similar role to BobbyRiddell a few years ago.’

To be a contributor doesn’t mean you throw up points and rebounds. In this instance I even gave an example of what the role could look like for Luce as a senior. Riddell wasn’t a highly used player and played a specific role when guys got in foul troUnless ahead of him. I’m literally saying Luce is essentially Riddell 2.0.

Comment about Wheeler...I’ll share it again below:

‘...He is Troy Williams athletic with a higher ceiling because of where his skills are right now.’

Again, read it slowly and not just topical. I said he is athletic like Williams but because he actually has a current skill set to build on, he has a higher ceiling. I even gave an example of how Wheeler hit a three pointer and played good defense today.

Come on guys....if I have to type it in a way that I teach to my high school students, let me know. I figured almost would be able to infer what I am saying without needing to explain everything down. Sorry if you get butt hurt from that comment but honestly...you are reading it wrong.

Read that he was out of the boot and will be could be available for the closed scrimmage coming up. There is no reason to rush him because I would hate to see him need surgery and miss the year again.

Had first MRI Friday and came back clean. Another one next week to double check and to be cleared before WVU scrimmage.

Agree that he should be held from WVU and Carroll College scrimmages. Let him play back in form in meaningful games prior to Atlantis.

A "Contributor" to me is someone in the rotation. I still don't believe Luce will ever be anyone to play any meaningful minutes at Purdue. He will always be the 14th or 15th man. We can agree to disagree on Wheeler's ceiling. I don't think he will ever be a NBA level player. He could be a pretty good college player in the next few years though. I'm guessing you are one who isn't for teacher pay based on how well their students do on standardized tests...

No because although I would be fine because I generally have good students with decent parents at home...people teaching in IPS or Gary shouldn’t be subject to their pay when a child’s home life ruins their education.

Also, I teach history and am not subject to the ridiculous ECA’s or any other standardized test. But ask my students at the end of the year and they’ll understand the issues at play with fossil fuels and climste change, political geography of North and South Korea, the cultural and political climate of Palestine vs Israel, the cultural and political impact of the Bosnian genocide on Eastern Europe today, and the negative impact NAFTA has had on all three countries that are a part of it.

But if you’d like to keep trying to downplay my importance and my understanding of the whole picture of education, please continue to do so. I mean, you’ve probably run a business or two or maybe read an article on school choice so you can understand how it should work. Hell, I’ll bet you think me making 40k a year in my tenth year of experience is way too much and I’m just a huge drain on the economy that had another multi-trillion dollars dumped on by the GOP and Trump.

Not going to turn this into an education debate. I respect your answer, while having different views.

Hey, thanks for protecting me from being too enthusiastic. I really appreciate you looking out for us simple minded folks that have a hard time making our own judgement. You have really really really helped me here, and I am sure the rest of Boiler nation appreciates your sincere efforts.

Please note, this was written after watching Nebraska nip us by 1 with 10 seconds left in the game. Sure glad I have my "realism glasses" on and didn't get too enthusiastic about our football team either. In a bad mood - sorry if my sarcasm is a little over the top.

Glad I could help. Sorry that you are in such a bad mood over the football team. At this point you should be used to it.

So Wheeler hasn't even started his freshman campaign and you already chalked him as never being an NBA player. That is probably the most foolish thing I have read on this thread

I much rather prefer JohnnyDoe's unbridled optimism over your curdled negativity.

I would disagree with CMP on that then....When is the last time anyone shot 50% for Purdue from 3??.... I imagine over history there haven't been too many VOLUME shooters in the whole NCAA that have been 50% shooters from 3. I think Bennett shot 49.7 but that is as high as I know of.

I don't care what you prefer. He can have his opinion and I will have mine. By the way, most future NBA players play and make an impact as a freshman. It doesn't appear Wheeler will be in the rotation.

Kyle Guy (remember him?) didn't lead the NCAA and shot 50.5% last year. so why not Cline? Why not Matthius? I wouldn't base the response on history. Before last year, no Purdue player had ever delivered 28 double-doubles in points and rebounds in a season. Did that make it an impossible accomplishment? A sophomore did it.

Brian Cardinal redshirted as a freshman. Steve Sheffler was not an impact player as a freshman. He would hyperventilate from nerves when he was put in the game. A lot can happen after a year of adjusting to college.

I'll add that Carl Landry went JUCO not because of grades. He didn't get any scholarship offers his senior year.

I didn't say it was unheard of. I said most future NBA players make an impact as a freshman.

In 95 cuonzo hit 91 3’s while shooting 47%

That’s the best 3 point shooting displays in purdue history.

Cornell is listed as having the highest % in history at 50%, but he only made 61 that year. I think zo’s season is much more impressive.

Understood. But you used a broad generalization as the basis for your opinion of a specific freshman player's future. I provided specific examples just from Purdue to show that a kid's future isn't determined by his freshman year.
