This is going to be a fun year, folks. I haven't looked at the stats yet, but this team is big, deep, and talented.

They hit a lot of shots (I think Cline in particular hit 4 or 5 consecutive 3s during one stretch), which always makes a team look good, but it's hard to see many deficiencies with this squad.

The only concern I have is Hill, who apparently did not participate due to a grad school conflict. I hope that's all it is, but Mathias seemed to be an adequate replacement.

This second scrimmage has gotten me EVEN more jazzed up for the season. Vince sounds like a first team All BIG and Biggie sounds like he is living up to the hype. And Cline....holy crap. Hell PJ sounds like he is seriously going to challenge for minutes this year with his vastly improved shooting and athleticism around the rim. Vincent Kennedy Edwards is just going to be a terror this year.

I was most impressed with Vince. More athletic, quicker and going to be a big rebounder/garbage guy. If it were me and the match ups were right Dakota would be my starting point guard hand down. He and RayD were both on all 3 winning teams today. Cline was impressive. Kendall needs to realize who/what he is. Freaking square up to the basket and don't take shots if he isn't. He would be aa 55% 3 point shooter if he did. Biggie will be good. Everyone else has improved.

IMO Swanigan and Edwards were the cream of the crop today and that is saying a lot PJ was without a doubt the best PG but Dakota did better than I expected . Isaac was much more active and ran the court extremely well he was able to post AJ low better than he showed last year . Kendall was a poised veteran and looks to have improved his over all game had a sweet block on Basil . Ryan Cline won't redshirt kid guarded Ray and vice versa he gave as good as he got just out standing today played a complete game very physical . Vince has developed into a Basil type athlete hard to describe but you can see it in all aspects of his game . Ray is simply smarter than everyone else and it shows . Biggie looked like a one and done he is special you can't help but see it . Going to be hard to get enough minute for all this talent but Biggie , Vince and Ray will get theirs . Anyone who didn't put Biggie on their preseason all B1G Ten first team missed it by a mile . We are deep very deep . Great day would have liked to see Hill it will take some kind of talent to beat out PJ .

You have to redshirt at least someone. Otherwise you'll just waste someone's year.

With the guards looking good, I just don't know where you find time for a guy like Cline. Who's he going to get minutes over? The only question would be someone's health.

I might have agreed with that prior to today, but he shoots 3s like most people shoot lay-ups. He's tough, savvy, and might bet the best shooter in the country, so I don't see how he won't get minutes.

Smotherman (though I like what he adds) and Weatherford are shirt candidates imo.

Im so glad someone sees the potential that a Mathias PG line-up has! That is going to be our money line-up. 1. Mathias 2. Davis 3. Edwards 4. Biggie 5. AJ. I would start and end all 40+ games with this line-up if I were Painter.

I typically don't get too worked up easily but I'm ecstatic over this team. This got me so worked up I went and bought Michigan State game. Living way up north I don't go to many games but that's a can't miss.

Boy this team appears deep!

Trying to give impressions on a team when seeing them once playing against each other can be misleading due to the players knowing each other better than the other team knows them and knowing the playing structure for the team allowing players to cheat a little. That said I went to the second scrimmage to 1) see John Hill and he didn't play. 2) Watch biggie play and see if he surprises 3)see how much more athletic Vince was 4) watch Ryan cline play and see if he is quick enough as a freshman to play 5)Watch Jacqui Taylor 6) Watch Grant Weatherford play and see if he can play this year. So temper everything based upon a single intra-squad scrimmage as rarely does one game tell the story

Teams played man and zone switching players for all three scrimmages. There is a lot that can be said and so I'll condense this. Hill didn't play, but Biggie exceeded my expectations...not in stats (which must be good), but in things that can carry over every game. I expected him to be a board man due to the attention AJ and Haas would gather, but he doesn't need it. He is already very mature in that aspect. I cannot recall another Purdue player in the last 20 years that was aggressive going to the offensive glass as Biggie. The last player was Ian Stanback that had that offensive board mentality. I expected Biggie to be a good passer, but his vision is better than I thought. He will be a handful at the high post as he draws contact and shields the ball. Internal passing with Biggie at a high post will be solid as well as getting some outlets. He did commit a couple of cheap fouls, but his board aggressiveness and vision will be there every game. He is going to make Purdue very lethal inside. Impressive for a kid that hasn't played a college game. Purdue fans are going to like him and I never did think he was a one and done, but I'm going to shut my mouth to see him play some more because I was very impressed with him ...again one game

Vince, is quicker and more athletic...no question. I never paid attention to see if he was dropping the ball from the pocket and slowing down his shot, but his shot in structure play did not seem that much quicker to me. However, he was more aggressive with the ball and took the ball on a break in traffic and flushed it. He is quicker with the ball in driving and shooting. Yes, this very skilled player is now more athletic. In warm ups I thought he was too passive and might get him off to a slow start, but he played well and made a nice tip with his left hand on a hustle play. Vince and Biggie are two 6'8" and 6'9" players that are more skilled than many players their size. Both can do a lot of things and both will be match-up problems for other teams in man. Both will help with presses and both can play the high post...although I think Vince will be out on a wing more. Purdue fans...these guys may not be the most flashy players, but make no mistake...BOTH are good!

Ryan Cline...fared better than I thought he might with quickness. There were times I thought red-shirt Kendall and play Cline! I think he may have went 4/4 on the 3 ball in one stretch. This kid is a machine in that outside of nerves, his mechanics are so good that I don't think he will be quite as streaky as Kendall and could very easily come off the bench and hit shots cold. He will get some pub with his shooting. Part of me says how good could he be with a red-shirt and another part of me still sees Kendall a little streaky and he may be needed. FWIW...Dakota never shot much I don't think. He was solid, took good shots and handled PJ's pressure fine (Hill was out). Smart player that I do think has a little quicker stroke than last year. Always a place for heady players like Dakota...another passer. Two or three years ago Purdue was a lousy passing team...and I think all good teams pass the ball well. Purdue has a few passers on this team.

Jacquil Taylor 6'10" is rusty from injuries and red-shirt last year. I know he has the right attitude and I see sufficient athleticism to be a good player, but he is a little raw right now. He won't surprise me to become a pretty good player before he leaves Purdue though as he has 4 years to get it together and he knows it. Kid is a Boiler and we will know more about him in a couple of years. I don't see him getting a lot of time this year...when the Big starts anyhow.

Grant Weatherford was a person I never watched in high school and so I didn't know much about him other than what I read. Will he ever be a major offensive threat? IF not, maybe there is no reason to red-shirt him? He can help this team if the team is not needing him to score and just needs him to wear on a player for five minutes. Five minutes of fatigue and harassment of another player may be the difference in a ball game.

There were other things, but that was my interest. I do NOT fear a zone or man played against Purdue. Again biggie is a magnet on the boards and draws contact almost every time he touches the ball. The inner passing was pretty good! The unknown to me other than what Hill brings (and he didn't play) is how Purdue 1) handles pressure and 2) gets in a scoring threat with plenty of clock. Purdue cannot simulate that quickness in a scrimmage. It can be simulated in practice with extra players. However, other teams cannot simulate the size of Purdue...EVER! This team can be good, but there is so much depth it will be hard for early season jell due to so many players fighting for time. I left on a positive note. I think Purdue fans are going to see a good team. Turnovers will get better :)

Really want to see Biggie and Vince cram it on Layman (MD).
Layman is a hard match up for most teams. Biggie doesn't play above the rim...he is smart and uses his body well. Vince has got a few more springs this year. Purdue wants to beat MD up underneath more than get up and down the court with them...although Biggie made a nice outlet pass. I can see some rough edges early, but this team can become good!

I told my wife to get ready for some screaming this year. I am trying to tame my excitement but I can't. I told her if she doesn't like it , go shopping, make a quilt, or go play bingo or something. It's been bound up inside me for a few years and I'm due!!!

Yeah, I'm a big talker but I today I am giving her some space and comfort. A couple years ago my wife and I got to meet Boise resident Maureen O'Hara at a local film festival to raise money for a local cause. Today Ms O'Hara died at age 95. My wife and I will remember that afternoon forever. Not many movie stars from that time are around anymore. She was a classy strong lady even in her last years. Stuff happens but still a sad day for us.

Here, here. She obviously worked with John Wayne a lot and I saw this in an article about her death:

With her Irish spunk, she could stand up to the rugged Duke, both on and off screen. She was proud when he remarked in an interview that he preferred to work with men — "except for Maureen O'Hara; she's a great guy."

Another classic gone......

you're welcome. I only posted what I wanted to learn...but I think Purdue is capable of beating anyone...IF the handle pressure effectively...which I never saw.
We all know that crap can happen but I'm just stoked thinking about the possibilities of this season.

I've always wanted Dakota to play point. It just made the most sense to me given our personnel. However, I don't think we can say that'll happen after watching scrimmages. Not enough pressure.

Is he healthy now or what?

Can't we redshirt Taylor as last year was medical? It'd be hard to sit out 2 years but he seems like the best candidate to me.

What did basil do in this scrimmage?

On the offensive side of the ball, Dakota with the ball in a half court set would probably be fine...at least the way Purdue plays offensively. On defense that is another issue. Matt prefers to play in your face man D and ALL that starts with pressuring the ball. Typically it is the PG that starts it because that is usually the best on ball defender. Dakota cannot play the D on a quick PG. Now, if Purdue is in a zone...change that, but not sure how much Purdue will play zone. Dakota did fine against PJ pressure, but untested against a 6'3" quick pressuring player? I just don't know since I've never seen it. It has been said that Dakota has been sick and missed a lot of practice and the coaches are on record for saying Purdue fans haven't seen Dakota do what he is capable due to various health issues. However, he handled the ball for the scrimmages yesterday since Hill had class. Funny how Hill couldn't play due to class conflicts and rarely is that a problem elsewhere with U of L in mind most recently...

Taylor needs playing time in practice and mostly in a game. I think he will be fine, but his minutes will be limited this year. His O is rough, but although I never saw it, I think he could handle 1 and 5 ball screens fine as he is pretty agile and quick for a 6' 10" player. I doubt he would want to redshirt, but who knows?

Basil did fine (I would need to look at the stats above to see what they were) but I wasn't really watching him since there is a logjam and it is best for him to redshirt. Basil is the most athletic player and has the body to definitely play past college...he is that athletic as well. However, he would be best served for that by getting mroe 2 guard skills. If he could ever play a 2 in college, that would be a great start and it happens with ball handling and shooting. I really welcome him red-shirting even though there are probably times Purdue could use him this year.

Just because DM plays the point, doesn't mean he's going to guard the oppositions point. In fact, he probably won't. With our size, I'm not really worried about any of our guards getting beat by pressuring on the arc. There is going to be nowhere to go to inside without getting stuffed.

absolutely that the defense determines who they guard...but if Dakota is handling the ball, PJ is not playing and nobody else can guard it either...knowing nothing about HIll. Too many problems when the ball enters the paint adn the refs favor the dribbler today since fans want mroe up and down and scoring. Couldn't begin to suggest that getting past the guards helps Purdue...it could, but wouldn't count on it. too much chance for body fouls even if shot is blocked. AJ does a better job helping over a body of his team mate. Beside, what about the player that gets a step past the defender and pulls up before the D gets to him or draws teh help out and allows an offensive board by the opposing team. There is a reason why teams practice the shell drill and that is to prevent ball penetration. As I said with a zone, I could see Dakota playing a sagging D, more of a position D, but not the typical pressure Matt likes on the ball...and if Dakota is running point, does Hill or PJ play...and if not, what quicker player than Dakota guards the ball?

I just think if Dakota was to run the point that Purdue must adjust the D...WHICH could be the case against certain teams. Again, I'm thinking about beating good teams...not just beating anyone...

I don't think Painter will ever let the guards sag on D. Never has in the past. RD will be able to guard anyone on the court, so he could guard the point, but CMP will most likely put him on the best scorer. With Swanigan on the floor with AJ, the short pull ups will not be there either this year. I think we are going to be very difficult to score on and it appears our offense is going to be explosive. Going to be fun to watch.

Not'convinced on RD...would have to see it. Pj is on record in this scrimmage saying he knew he could blow by RD. There are many ways a team could play but I think what matt wants to do is put pressure on the ball and if so I think pj or hill will have to do it. Again that is not to say Dakota or Davis couldn't guard the 1 but I think Matt must alter the D concepts.

There is getting blown by and forcing a player into the help defense.

Ray knows the difference and I think many of our players understand it as well.

This. PJ said he went by Ray when he saw that AJ had turned around. Nobody can shut down a player from getting past them. What matters is which direction you let your guy get around you.

You have to redshirt at least someone. Otherwise you'll just waste someone's year.

With the guards looking good, I just don't know where you find time for a guy like Cline. Who's he going to get minutes over? The only question would be someone's health.

"You have to redshirt at least someone. Otherwise..."

Not if you're going for everything, planning for any & all circumstances [including, & especially multiple injuries, possible suspensions, grade problems, one & dones, transfers, ect., ect...] senarios & problems THIS SEASON, & want to give maximum chances to winning as many games THIS SEASON, as humanly possible. Why not, this is probably a once in a career line up/roster/team & perfect [positive] storm for Coach Painter, if played correctly. You never know where that sudden injury, suspension or grade problem may leap out at you from. Be prepaired [for anything & everything].

"If it ain't broke/injured, don't fix/redshirt it"

Maximum Effort

Go Boilers!!!

This is what I don't understand. Everyone's raving about Cline, and Stephens shot 7-13 and people are suggesting above to redshirt him and let Cline play....
I agree. I think a lot of it is perception. Cline is definitely higher energy than Stephens. I was impressed how hard Cline cut and moved without the ball. That said, a lot of folks forget the other things Stephens brings to the game vrs Mathias and Cline. Stephen's length gives him a block or two per game on the perimeter the other 2 can't give. He also seems to be better off the dribble at this time (though Cline yesterday also showed some flashes of it).

I think it was Painter who said they made a point to recruit the best shooter in the Midwest in each of the last 3 years. It's now a matter of how to handle them. My only concern with redshirting Cline is that Mathias seems illness prone, and Stephen's so far has been injury prone. If you could count on both of them to make it through the whole season, the redshirt makes sense in the long run.

I don't think that this is completely true. Painter likes to pressure the ball, but he lets players sag off the ball when appropriate.

absolutely that the defense determines who they guard...but if Dakota is handling the ball, PJ is not playing and nobody else can guard it either...knowing nothing about HIll.

I didn't attend the scrimmage, but Dakota's stat line sure looked good. I understand that he went 3-0 as well.

While Mathias has had some health issues, I don't think I would describe Stephens as injury prone. He had a finger injury last year, which obviously is not ideal for a basketball player (particularly a shooter) and easy to re-injure considering you're trying to get back into playing while not 100% healthy. Yes, he re-injured his finger - but I don't think I'd describe that as being "injury prone" by any means.
