MANSFIELD, Texas — The adidas event here in Texas is roughly 50 percent complete now following this morning's games and while there's more to come tonight, I have some time now to sit down and write, so here's a rundown of the day thus far.
• So Steve Lutz is now here for Purdue while Matt Painter has moved on to Atlanta to join Brandon Brantley at the Nike EYBL event there. Painter (obviously) watched Hunter Dickinson, Ethan Morton and the Indy Heat group with commitment Jaden Ivey, 2021 target Caleb Furst and prospects Kiyron Powell and Nijel Pack, among others, and I think he might have gotten to see Indy Heat's 16s team with Luke Goode and Jayden Brewer too.
• Anyway, here in Dallas, D1 Minnesota's 17-and-under team has targets Ben Carlson and Kerwin Walton, among some others, and obviously Lutz watched them.
Carlson is playing well, showing as sort of a versatile, but hard-charging, forward who's good on the glass, tries really hard and can play away from the basket too offensively. He runs and jumps well and he's certainly not skinny as a lot of hybrid 4 men are. He looks capable as a three-point shooter.
And, he's not as a high-character type and smart, probably the reason Stanford has had coaches at each of D1 Minnesota's first two games. Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm and Xavier's Travis Steele were among relevant head coaches at the game this morning, and assistants from Minnesota, Iowa, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Baylor have been among those watching D1 Minnesota, too.
Walton is getting some solid looks from deep, but hasn't been shooting at a particularly high rate. He's done some positive things off the dribble and showed off some burst this morning nearly stuffing with one hand, but settling for a foul.
• Regarding D1 Minnesota, their 16-year-old team has a player to watch in Camden Heide, a 15-year-old whose father, Craig, is a Lafayette Jeff grad who went to Purdue. Camden Heide said he grew up a Purdue fan and looks like he's going to be really good, so that might be one to file away for the 2022 recruiting cycle. Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska have been four schools who've been showing preliminary interest. We'd expect Purdue to join that list. Lutz was watching Heide when I left the facility this afternoon.
• Indiana Elite's 17-year-old team lost to Team Loaded-Virginia this morning, but after falling behind big early, made a real game of it, thanks in part to Trey Galloway, who I thought played very well in a game that might have really mattered toward his chances of getting offered by Indiana. Archie Miller, known to be looking at both Galloway and Anthony Leal, was at the game.
Galloway hasn't shot the three great and missed some foul shots, but he was good off the dribble, really good around the rim and great at the rim, with a couple very sudden and semi-violent dunks. I thought he played hard, too, and that stuff really matters in these situations.
Iowa and Notre Dame each had assistant coaches there.
Kentucky had an assistant coach present for Team Loaded, but I'm sure he took note of Khristian Lander, too. I'll try to grab Lander later for an update.
• Not much reason to think Purdue is a primary consideration, but it has at least recruited this guy, and he's really good.
• Trey Kaufman is out with a wrist injury, but Lutz and Archie Miller both watched Indiana Elite's 16U team, with JR Koneiczny, Curt Hopf and Cincinnati Moeller center Logan Duncomb, who we didn't see a couple weeks ago at Warren Central because he had prom. Duncomb has legitimate center size and seems to move pretty well for that size. He visited Purdue for its elite camp back in August.
Luke Brown had 20 points for Indiana Elite in a win over Garner Road. He's not the biggest or quickest player, but he can really shoot it, and did some really nice things as a passer, as well in this game.
Koneiczny is a really interesting player, too, a legit 6-7 with length who can really shoot, and really shoot on the move, too.
Have to get back. More to come later.
