Relax Nojel

...Eastern is doing fine and the few armchair coaches on here need to back off.
I don't know NE, but watching him and reading is mother's posts, I seriously doubt that he feels he is doing fine. I suspect, and hope, that he knows that he is capable of so much more. If he feels that he is "doing fine" then I would question if he should be playing in D1.
He is working hard obviously and making strides and I'm sure will continue to do so. He can play. But that doesn't mean observers are "haters" for mentioning obvious issues. I doubt that his mother fails to mention her view of shortcomings, or Coach Painter, or teammates, and surely they support him and want him to succeed. So do I, and so do the very vast majority posting on this site.

Nojel is fine. He's just getting his sea legs so to speak. He wants to do well and this is all so new. He wants to do what the coaches want and does not want to make mistakes. He will be more confident with additional playing time. I do think the coaching staff needs to reassure him when he makes a mistake because he will be a great player when he plays loose within the coaching schemes and philosophy. It can be a slippery slope to want something so much and make mistakes ... easy to be overly hard on yourself.

As for shooting, it seems he doesn't hold the ball correctly, but it's correctable with some work. Elbow isn't directly beneath the ball. (Want shoulder -> elbow -> hand to be a solid base vertically, then follow through straight up. Then, you can trust the ball will always be inline with hoop, then it's a matter or touch/arc based on distance of shot). Nojel seems to have some angles in this form that he must compensate with motion through the follow thru. So, sometimes the shot isn't in line and it's not easily reproducible.
not sure if it is verbiage usage or actual difference, but I don't believe you want the ball directly over the elbow. That locks the shoulders and makes you shoot beside your head. Baumgartner would teach the shooting not directly under the ball, but out a bit. Ernie Hobbie would teach placing the thumb over your shooting eye for the correct angular motion. Without the technicalities...I think you will find most of the good shooters shoot over their head rather than the side of their head. This may be a semantic difference, but the two shooting coaches I mentioned would not want the elbow directly below the ball, but out a bit. I think Ernie's example of thumb over eye is easily taught and is a visual that the elbow is not directly under the ball, but out a bit...again it could be semantics...

My very limited viewing of Nojel from the angles allowed show him not taking the ball into the shooting pocket correctly which does in fact align the shot...Sorry if I misunderstood anything

Wow!

I am not sure we win that game without him!
Some of these guys get pretty emotional. I doubt that it was meant in the manner in which it can be interpreted now. Many times I have done dumb things and thought, "Well that was retarded".

It is not a politically incorrect slur against mentally handicapped people. It is not a deeply felt conviction about the mental capability of Haas. It was just an outburst of frustration during an emotional game.

I get the 'this player didn't play well" or "the team stunk" or "that specific play hurt us" but name calling or going on beyond that needs a mirror check. Maybe that doesn't matter to some but I don't care who is on this board, it shouldn't be okay to do. We are all cheering (well not everyone here) for our Purdue kids out there. I get upset too but....sigh.

Here is the way I approach it. I love the game and fully aware of just how good ball players are on the bench. Right or wrong...most players are trying as hard as possible and nobody needs ridiculed. Now, it is easier to get frustrated with "mental" mistakes than physical ones that are not easily if ever correctable...

I do think it's funny how we used retarded quite frequently when I was a kid. Then they said "challenged" was a better term. Now even that word is questioned as inappropriate.

Haas should be dunking that ball almost all the time like Shaq did. I don't know why he doesn't unless he just can't do it.
Haas must play better, stronger. if he gets a high feed why doesn't he quickly turn and just shoot instead of bringing the ball down low??? plus at his height and bulk, 3 or 4 boards is not nearly enough. he's a senior and should dominate.....of course being fouled constantly doesn't make it easy!

Why? There is no bonus for a dunk. I don't see it beneficial for him to make the added exertion for show. Just MAKE the damn shot.

From Andy Katz's 5 take-aways from the game (link to article):

3. Play of the game: Nojel Eastern wrestled away a loose rebound and got the Boilermakers out on the break. The Boilermakers would turn a 36-32 deficit into a 43-36 lead for the Boilermakers. That type of glue-guy play is exactly what the Boilermakers need to do when things go awry. Now, Louisville did come back and take the lead but Purdue turned up the pressure, forced turnovers and fed off an emotional crowd.

Go read the game thread. He was shit on during the game. One poster even called him "retarded" when he missed a layup.
no. if youre gonna read the game thread after the fact you are going to miss context. a turnover was retarded. not a player. i dont even think it was haas. so stfu.

Love the kid. He has poise and confidence. We won't have to wait until next year for him to impact the game. He will do it this year after fighting through some battles with quality teams, like last night. He's smart and you can see he knows immediately when he's made a mistake. You just know he'll fix those.

To be honest I am not sure I want NE shooting a jump shot this year unless needed.

Bring the ball up the court (needs to lower his stance so his pocket quits getting picked), pass the ball and be sure to look the pass in, play hard nose defense, bring energy, rebound on both ends and get layups when they are there for the taking.

Keep learning and try to relax and have fun.

at least once last night he got the ball to far under the basket and when he does he trys to just lay it in. against good players that will get swatted away about 90% of the time. pass it back out quickly to an open teammate

anyway that's what coach spradecki teaches. ;- }

Your not giving him credit for his play on defense where he fit into the team concept and that is the most important part. Your better than that. I don't understand you right now. But don't answer that because it will probably be another back handed compliment.
Honestly, I came in from a meeting about 2 minutes before he missed the dunk and the bunny shot. I didn't see his defense you speak of at all because of that.

I hope the kid does well, and playing great defense in Painter's system is the fastest way to get more playing time. What I saw of his play, he's a typical frosh.

This....I felt when Eastern was in, especially in the first half, he was able to help control and corral UL on the defensive end while the offensive output was struggling. When Eastern was in, it was great to see he had made great strides in his defensive stance and fundamentals. Also, he didn't get lost on the defensive side while fighting through screens off the ball.

I think it would energize the crowd at home. When he gets the ball down on the block, take a step and pound it down. He would become more of a scoring threat and open up more space on the outside should they collapse for the kick out.

Wow what a game not pretty but a huge win. For all the fans who think they no my son and what he needs to do or work on thanks for the advice Nojel will fine. Poke fun at this and that but you not on the court none of you. You not out there rebounding or playing defense. As I stated before needs to get be on the Courtney more to get in a flow. They run a tone of plays he must learn at every position not easy folks. He can play trust me when I say that. Freshman I don’t use that as an excuse he has played up all his life and once he can be on the court a little more you will see what kinda player he is. I just find it funny so many got an answer of what he should do about his shot, FT or anything about his game that i his mother don’t already no. Hey its All good tho i no he’s in the gym late nights early mournings when he isn’t watching film, I’m class, weight training, studying he putting in that work to get better working on every aspect of his game. A lot of season left his time is coming.

LOL iu troll? Child please. Also, no wonder you are so upset about this. It was you that called him retarded!!!!
didnt call him anything. but you outed yourself when you said we gave the redshirt to the wrong freshman. trolls cant help themselves! everyone on here know that i love haas. so good try sport!

Not sure how that implies I'm an IU troll. You calling Haas "retarded" is way more of a trollish post. Especially given his sister's situation. Incredibly disrespectful on your part.

as you have said many times, none of the highly ranked high school players will make an immediate impact their first game. it takes time to learn new plays and adjust. I haven't read one comment about how well or bad JJJ has done at MSU. I know he's not making headlines or being mentioned as the college player of the year. With all freshmen, it's not a matter of talent. it's a matter of time. Fortunately, we have some very good teammates and also coaches to learn from. I suspect with time, Nojel will prove to his naysayers how great he is .

I see your point, but JJJ was not a great example. He is averaging 10 pts, 8 rebs, and 2 blocks on a top 3 team....

You kinda hit it on the nail. Confidence comes with more playing time and last night despite the miss layup and dunk he was in the game that help spark the team to eventually take the lead. I Appreciate all you boiler fans for having my son back when so many wanna pick holes in his game. Gonna get a shooting coach to help him with his shot which will help with his FT shooting. He has game and In due time it will be shown. By the way he isn’t on this board reading these posts like his crazy mother is doing lol. I new what I signed up for when I 1st posted on here I was warned and now I see what they the posters was saying. It’s all good tho we’re I’m from gotta have thisck skin and as a license referee I hear it all but words can hurt sometimes and they do but they are just words no hands are laid on my baby I can deal with the rest.

Unfortunately you are going to get hat no matter what on the internet. Funny thing is, those getting on him probably can't even bounce a basketball without falling down let alone do a tenth of what your son can do.

I also know the day will come that he shuts all those critics up once and for all. He is too talented, too smart and was raised well.

Yes I agree with things you say but I don't think you need to defend him. Most people here support him and the situations at hand. That said, if it wasn't for fans, good and bad, there wouldn't be sports like this at all so that's the way it is with opinions. They will always be there and thank the lord we don't agree with everything each other says. It would be boring and worthless to me then. Also, many athletes are gifted with size and abilities that others would never have. That's genetics. I did play a sport my freshman year so I understand it somewhat even though I am an artifact now. I just didn't have the size and strength of others. I also get what you are saying about all the work that young, good athletes put in. It's a pat on the back to them for the time spent to make themselves better. That said, people like myself have worked for 37 or more years in demanding jobs so people do know about making it and working to make themselves better with sacrifices to just make the cut. You have more of an investment here than we do with the sport with your fine son so I understand the Mom in you. It's entertainment to us and part of that are opinions, good and bad. Again, most are on your side and I don't think you need to justify things here. As a parent, I'm the same way with my two girls. I still don't think this is a board you should follow since it can be hurtful. That's just me though. You are obviously tough as nails. Your insight is so fresh to read but I just don't know what satisfaction will end up coming from here for you. Not trying to be a butt.

So got trapped in the emotion of it all as some of the others? I can see that. Glad to see your last post has some positives in it, and we all know he is a freshman. So, if I remember correctly, you are an IU guy that came to the Purdue side because you felt that Knight got a raw deal, thus flipping your allegiance to Purdue basketball. So are now flipping back and becoming an Archie Worshiper? Just askin'. And, do you remember the name Quinn Buckner? The reason I bring that up is that there is a lot more to playing "good" basketball than shooting.
