Reality comes to town Alabama

Our somewhat slow paced offense will get a wake up call when the boys from Bama come to town , we are going to have to play some defense and speed up to keep up. Boiler up
They're getting "better" on D, but still a ways to go. I think we'll take some lumps (maybe bad losses) against good teams early. BS loose ball handling going to be a problem if it keeps showing up. Play them again later. ;)

Bama is going to be an exceptionally tough game for a team still learning to play without Zach. I fully expect to take some lumps as others have said for a while as we figure things out, but I think by the end of the season it all comes in to place at the right time.

I think that also goes for the coaching staff.. they have a lot of talent to sort through .. and YOUNG talent.. which will take time.

Will be a good test coming up to say the least.

Yes only had 10 TOs last night, but should have been 6 with those just careless head scratchers.

I agree we need to get better on D. Some small steps are there. Colvin an example last night. This Jacobsen deal is a bigger set back than many think. Alot of coaching to instill the will to box out in these guys by Jan. conf season.

I almost hope we don't shoot lights out and beat AL. I think they might??

But long term, hate to say it, I prefer a thrashing by AL. It would help the coaches get their attention on boxing out and interior D....both which are sub par.

I think we give Alabama a good run. We have been shooting very well and offense clearly isn’t the problem. Hopefully our three point defense is on point and we grab the long rebounds off of misses.

Defense this year is gonna take some time. Lots of new faces who haven’t played college ball at all. Give it time and perhaps by February we see a much improved team on that end.

Slow pace? We're averaging 84 ppg. Against not garbage competition.

Friday will be a good litmus test. The thing is, if you think we haven't looked that good so far, neither has Alabama. They had to hold off not only McNeese last night, but also Arkansas State, who lost 17 games last year. I haven't watched more than a couple minutes of their games, but it's clear that they're still figuring things out too.

I'm putting the spread at Purdue -1.5 Friday. We shall see.

Yes we can score with anyone. I am afraid we might shoot lights out and actually win this thing, which would be fun.

BUT imo, is the opposite of this team's long term needs. They will listen better if AL pulverizes us.

I’d be shocked to see us favored…but let’s see.

it'll be a great test for our guys , but if we shoot well, rebound, and keep TO's to a minimum, they'll be alright. At the very least it'll serve as great experience that should help down the road. So let them come to town

You know a lot more about setting odds then I do. I will be very surprised if Alabama isn't favored by a few points.

Agree Jacobsen in particular with his shot blocking created some hesitation in the lane by all. As for the freshman, I remember some freshmen that played in a November tournament and kicked butt a couple years ago ....

Bama went 11/33 this last game so I expect them to hit 11 In the first half 😂

Either way, it will be good to see where we measure up at this point. Bama has A LOT of talent but with that, guys figuring out what their roles are still as some have been THE guy on their previous team. So maybe we can sneak in a win, but we will have to play well and REBOUND. Nelson, cliff and Stevenson are tall and athletic and gonna cause us some matchup issues. I’m sure paint is going to have a plan tho.

Gonna be a good one and don’t worry if we lose, boys! It’s early in the season and it’ll be great experience.

I am far less concerned about our pace than I am about defense. We have youth struggles that will get ironed out as the season progresses.

My biggest concern is the number of unforced errors. Smith launching a pass to Loyer, who wasn't looking, is a prime example.

I expect two losses in a row.

Bama probably. Marquette…they haven’t really been that great. Obviously can beat us but I don’t expect us to lose to them

Will be interesting how the teams will shoot from 3…

Purdue is hitting just about 44% on 10 makes on ~24 attempts a game through 3 games. 54% overall from the field and 70% from FT.

Bama shooting 30% on just over 8 made 3s a game on ~ 28 attempts a game. 49% from the field overall and 67% overall from FT.

other stats (avg per game) — >

Purdue: 34 (just over 7 offensive)

Looks like that's the game right there.

Can we compete on the boards? For us, just getting close to them in perhaps a 40R game will be a great stride.

But AL looks like an old Mich State Team that just kills you in the glass, and keeps wearing you down via shots on goal where you are playing D all night.

Well, on the flip side, you could say they’ve missed a lot of shots so…that’s why they have high rebounding numbers 🫣 😂

Yeah, if they out-rebound us by 13 it’s gonna be a long night.

Maybe we have a 3 night Loyer Smith Colvin Cox

Bama -2 is my guess

Good info. Pretty close competition too. Here are the opponents and Kenpom ranking:

Alabama
UNC Asheville - 213
Arkansas State - 102
Mcneese State - 110

Purdue
TAMU-CC - 219
Northern Kentucky - 173
Yale - 106

Not sure an athletic Alabama team is a good matchup for Berg, he’s slow.
This is the time you find out those things. Many said the same about Zach in his early years. Yes, he's older, but still hasn't seen the floor much at any advanced level of hoops. He doesn't seem so mechanical when you watch drills of him so I suspect like a lot of newbies things are happening very quickly for him on the floor. he's not played nearly enough to be past that and playing relaxed and free and not over thinking specific situations and where I'm supposed to be when X man goes corner, ect ect.
Until then, you can't tell. he's spending time processing his reaction. Slowing down everything he does.
I'm encouraged with the glimpses of him playing BIG he's shown us at this early stage.
I certainly think he'll develop the lob game with Braden and Fletcher, same as DJ was. And that will stoke his confidence like a wood burning stove I think. Well hope anyway. But I think a decent chance of it. I think Big Red could be a fan favorite if he's throwing it down and getting excited. Caleb and Raleigh can be solid rotation guys. Hoping Will can give us the post threat other than TKR. Every good team needs more than 1 guy there.
I think in time he can.

Take a lot of 3pt shots and you get a lot of long bounces outside of the lane. It would make sense they have more rebounds and possessions with as many missed shots from deep as they have.

I see this game as being a great forecast for the season. I don’t see playing small ball being successful against the top teams.

I also don’t see Berg as being anything more than a supporting role player
