Purdue vs. Northwestern Ohio

The 3PT shooting was basically a continuation of the Cincinnati game. The FT shooting was better. It looks like Taylor played well, as did Edwards, Haas, Mathias, Swanigan, and Thompson. Stephens played okay. I hope Davis' ankle injury isn't serious. The defense must have turned it up a level in the second half. They had NW OH at 7 points for the half until the final minute of the game. As others have mentioned, the A/TO ratio for the game is impressive.

I have to disagree on Stephens. His shot was off, but he played well on defense and had 13 points I believe. That's not okay. I'll take 13 from him any day.

10 3's in a game is a lot. Too many. The 8 Kendall shot against Cincinnati was too many. It disrupts your offensive efficiency. Especially if you're not hitting. Same thing with Cline going 0-6. 2 years ago Wisconsin had Brust who just jacked up 3 after 3. Soon as he left their offensive efficiency went through the roof, dwarfing the next closest team in the country.

This team needs a pinch more Basil.

3 point shooting is going to be the difference between a great year and an ok year. I keep harping on that but it is so obvious. We are going to play good defense and we are going to rebound those are given. If we can shoot close to 40% from 3 we will be in for a great season. If we shoot closer to 30% we are going to struggle against good teams.

Disagree to a point. We have many other lethal weapons to score with. However, we do need a decent percentage of 3's to keep the middle open.

That happens this can be a great year. Hill showed last night that he knows how to break a zone. If others follow ... we are in great shape.

Personally I think as Vince goes, the Boilers go.

First of all let me say I agree about Vince being the catalyst this year. I stated on another thread that Vince is better than AJ right now.

However, if we don't shoot a higher % than last year on 3's we are going to have some very frustrating nights. We are going to face so much zone this year. While it's great to get penetration that really isn't a strength for us. If Hill and Vince can do more of that I will love it but I think our chances are much greater with improved 3 point shooting. I don't think we are disagreeing that much just maybe more a difference of emphasis on how we break up a zone defense.

It is my belief that as the season gets tougher, so will the perimeter shooting. I understand and rightfully so that Purdue has made an emphasis on defense with not as much offense at this time. It is good to start the season with an emphasis on the important things that can be done every game.

That said I truly believe (perhaps wrongly?) that Purdue will be fine on the perimeter shooting this season. I base that on having an additional three point shooter on the team this year. I base that on not having much emphasis on that part of the game so far. I base that on what should be a healthier two (Dakota/Stephens) than last year. I base that on an improved stroke by Rapheal and Vince and what appears to be with PJ as well. I base that on an older team that should buy a little more time for the shooting. I also think the IQ and vision by Caleb will create for the perimeter...and did I say the bigs are going to require doubles more than likely? If January comes around and Purdue is not a threat on the perimeter, I'll be surprised. In fairness, I've been wrong before, but...

I sure hope you're right on at least a couple of these!! It will make for a much better team. We are going to be good, I have a hard time thinking of a scenario where we won't be. What I'm looking for is the chance to have a great season and to do that I think we have to have much better 3 point shooting. We had a lot of wide open looks last night that didn't go down. We will continue to get good looks, can we make them? That is what we are waiting to see. KS had several that he caught had time to set and still missed. Those are the kind we have to make close to 40% on. That's what really good teams do. Let's hope they start hitting them! Boiler Up!!

KS is a streak shooter, don't like his hand placement and he overstrides as he steps into his shot many times. Once Cline gets acclimated I think he will be more consistent. No question, solid at that area and Purdue is REALLY good!
