Purdue vs. Michigan: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Nor should he ever think about it.
I didn't say that. I just started the obvious. Painter isn't going to do it. Whether he should or not is another discussion and would probably require addition of a better portal guard or a larger more consistent jump from Colvin.

I don’t understand all the Loyer glazing. His defense is ass. It will always be ass. He flops around and gets a couple charges and now it’s considered good? Our defense is so bad right now that taking a couple charges is considered good? Like this is the ceiling for our defense? Loyer didn’t have a field goal for 30 minutes. Guys….30 minutes. How is that acceptable?

I guess I’m more frustrated with the fact that people believe that this is the best we can get. A guy who disappears in games especially some games where we might need him the most. It’s lack of ability to create a shot. He looks like a 1950s NBA highlight reel when he drives. Slow on screens. But lord all mighty I know if he was on another team playing against us, he would torch us for 30 cause our defense is so bad right now.

We are all just frustrated. We are losing.

Man, you must have a horrible life to really believe that S*HIT *SS city is the best city. You aren't a Purdue fan. I can tell...your here to troll
Says someone to scared to ever even visit it and watches nothing but faux news. Afraid of your own shadow because its black. People like you are the lowest of low lifes

Your city is a joke
Again, another person afraid of his own shadow because its black. If I had a dollar for every redneck conservative who told me how awful my city was then admitted they had never actually stepped foot in it but "sees it on the news" I wouls be rich. If I had a dime for every time I met someone in chicago there for the first time who told me how in love with the city they were and how it was nothing like they imagined, I'd also be rich. But hey, it truly is your loss and I dont want people like you or the other guy in my city anyways, backward ass people are not welcome.

Painter is never ever ever benching Loyer.
That's probably true. And, Fletch has earned his starting role. I mean, he was the league's best 3-point shooter in B1G play. That's not nothing.

But he has limited athleticism. I kindof feel like Fletch's ceiling is more or less Purdue's ceiling without an infusion of athleticism into the back court. That could nean finding someone in the portal like Lance last year or one of Colvin/Heide/Cox/Harris emerging as a consistent leader.

Not a big fan of dumping on players. Smith is an AA and BTPOY. I do think he has played too many minutes. I do think we need to play 5 on 5 and not just depend on the P&R every possession. TKR needs to pass back out at times. Edey was pretty good at that. I'm frustrated like everyone else about the past few weeks. Not sure what will happen next week. I wasn't expecting an ELITE 8 run a few years back but Carsen and Cline proved me wrong.

When Loyer is scoring and helping spacing by being a threat from three he helps the offense a lot and it's worth the tradeoff with how bad he is on defense.

When he isn't then yeah he's not value added like last night.

To be fair, Smith played no better last night. The whole team looked like they were running sets they'd never run before. Berg looked like he had no idea what to do on offense. Burgess also only played a minute like what's the point if they are only playing one minute?

And why is Smith playing 39 minutes in a 20 pt blowout?

Loyer's defense isnt' the issue with this team. He took two great charges tonight. Can't understand why you guys are all over his ass when he's the leading three point shooter in the league and ranked highly in the nation.

As I said earlier, we have at least four to five more losses without him. Colvin nor Harris are better.
Loyer is a heady player and a very good shooter. We usually agree, but his defense is bad. He does get a call or two on charges, but he gets abused on defense all the time. This also causes others to help and then they look worse than they are. I also don’t know why he can’t get an occasional rebound. Smith being so much shorter gets way more rebounds than Loyer. Not saying to bench him, but just my thoughts on him.

Agree TJ, but now the defense has disappeared again.
The last few games the weakside has got ball watching and sucked in far enough to try to prevent dribble penetration that the 3 ball was open as well. What appeared to me as a step towards the lane to contain dribble penetration as well as gambling a bit on steals that worked so well a few games ago has not been near as effective.

You have zero clue who I am as a person. Believe me. I'm not scared of Chicago at all.

In fact, I used to go up there around 10 times a year. My wife's uncle/aunt lived there and was the former owner of Des Plaines publishing. He had courtside season tickets back when MJ was playing. First time going up there. I grabbed our bags out of the car and started walking into their condo, I noticed a gentleman walking behind me and her aunt opens the door for me and says Hello, Horace. To my surprise it was Horace Grant.....that's when I knew, I was marrying up.

Yeah - when it worked, TJ, Purdue players were getting in the passing lanes (especially Smith when he wasn't digging on the backside), but they were outside the paint.....these opposing teams know, get the ball in the paint. After that, I don't care how good the Boilers' rotation is, unless they could cleanly strip guys, going to be trailing the play and out of rebound balance - that was a broken record every Painter pre-game interview the last 5 weeks or so.

I'm with you that that help defender has either been watching (too passive) or comes with a late, soft double, which isn't very useful. Haven't seen a whole lot of good box outs either and when Purdue players are in decent position, they aren't low enough to effectively screen off the defender - for gosh sakes, give 'em something to think about. Furst was for a while last night, for what it's worth. And, you still have to jump for the ball and go get it, and Painter has talked about this several times before/after games.

Remarkably, I have not had to be on remote lockdown despite watching some frustrating games - gotta be ten times the order of magnitude for the Purdue team. They know it and can't seem to solve the puzzle.....or somebody hid the key pieces. Very difficult to stop the negative inertia - but that's a big part of big time competition and leadership......adapt, embrace, and overcome adversity.

Will be interesting either way next week.

Caleb battled last night. Very early in the game in an O/Bs Braden was looking towards the elbow and his man went to short corner and scored. So, I think Matt's concern's on the boards was that he could get more turnovers to compensate for that deficiency and did early. I guarantee the coaches and players are frustrated. Before the scoring gap ballooned out Purdue was okay with maybe 13 minutes left and that is with all the missed shots and D issues in play...which could be signs of fatigue at least on the shooting. Being last in 2pt D takes in more than last night. ;)
