The role players, the guys we’ve all been disappointed in all season, start doing what we want. And this is over the course of several games. It seems to be a trend. But the team seems to be worse. I mean this does not look like a good team at all. I just don’t get it, with the 2 top guys we have, it should be better than what we’re watching. I get that we are limited defensively but come on.

our guard's defense sucks. and our opposition has the blue print of our two man offense Just let TKR get his points and let Braden be a shooter rather than a distributer. it's an automatic win.
Braden was a lot better guard when he was a floor general directing our offense rather than trying to be our floor general and our outside scoring threat. We need Smith to go back to distributing the ball and our other guards steping up and actually taking shots rather than standing and watching. Smith just can't be expected to do everything.

We have become very predictable. High pick and roll with Smith and TKR or TKR post up. Not a lot else.
We don't run sets for Loyer very often and he's not a create his own shot guy so when he has an off night then we are really in trouble.
Defense was absolutely horrible tonight. No one can stop dribble penetration. And I mean no one. So we struggle to manufacture a shot while they routinely get open looks because of how easy they penetrate.
We’ve been predictable for years. We didn’t just become that recently. It’s great to have a big that you think can score every touch. We’ve had that and we still do. But this one is a zero at the other end. Braden has been missing all of the manufactured shots we have to offer and that’s an L for Purdue just about every night
It certainly doesn't look good going into next week. But I will say we've seen Purdue teams succeed in the postseason when it didn't look good before. I agree with Qaz that we are predictable on offense. And we don't switch well on defense. CMP keeps talking about keeping guys out of the paint, and they keep allowing it.
I will say this though, for the glass-half-full crowd. We missed a TON of normal, good looks tonight. Most from TKR. His stats look good except for the FG%. 24 points but it took 24 shots to get it. Good, if not great looks. Braden too. I thought he got a little shot-happy in stretches tonight, but most were good looks. But he didn't make any of those 15-foot fall-aways. And missed 8 3s. If we do that, we're gonna lose. To anyone, even a 13 seed next week.
Harris, Colvin and Heide all looked better tonight though. So that gives me hope. I don't know what has happened to CJ though. Remember back when he had the huge game against Nebraska and everyone was ready to anoint him? Uh-huh. This was always a reloading team, Im just gonna try to enjoy whats left and not take it too serious.
Losing jacobson hurt. We cant stop penetration and havent been able to most of the sesson. We dont have a shot blocker either. He could have helped more on defense than anyone else on this team.
Mr. "Another round for the House, my good sir" says at least they've already made that trip this year for a pair of games over a similar time period.
Boilers definitely need a transfusion of energy and toughness.....play like your hair's on fire and go down swinging. I saw glimpses at times this season, but they need 40+ minutes of it. Easier said than done.
Made a huge difference in this year. We are too soft in the middle. Teams are just killing us in the paint.
Trey has had to play the 5, but he would be more effective as the 4. Furst plays too soft, even though he has the size to be better in the middle. Berg is Berg. Burgess will be ok as he gains more experience, but he is definitely a little over his head right now.
It probably won't happen, but it would be really nice to pick up a PF or C this Spring in the Portal for next year.
We really don’t know that Jacobson would have helped much defensively or not. Until he plays against the good competition it’s hard to really know.
They're respectable. They're just not elite or spectacular. They're pretty ordinary by the standards of NCAA Tournament teams.
We've gotten used to Purdue being really good over the past decade (give or take). This year's team is just a basic NCAA Tournament team.
The thought of competing at a continued very high level, by replacing the offensive and defensive production of Edey and Jones, with a true freshman 5 and an unproven 3, in hindsight, was very failed. This weakened our bench as well.
To those here that voiced needing portal adds with 5 and 3 experience, then leaving our bench players to continue to develop in a less than depended on bench role, were right on the money. To me, this year’s team simply wore down physically and mentally from what was being asked of them this year.

11-0 out in the PNW, so bring it on! From the PNW trip this year, seems like we got a good crowd out there.
Hope the rest helps over the next week and we don’t come out playing tight/not to lose. The first game of the BTT, we seemed a bit timid. Hope we hit some shots and get to the second weekend. We are done with big ten teams (for now) that know our stuff and player tendencies. Other teams won’t be ready for smith or the young bull, TKR.
Hopefully, we are also done with B1G officiating 😂
I don't know if it was "very failed" or just what Painter had. I mean, unproven guys step into major roles all the time in college basketball. Plenty are successful.
If Painter never puts his young guys in a position where their contributions (or lack thereof) really matter, they'll never learn to become dependable.
I don't like the term 'reloading' for this team when we have returning 'key' pieces.
Yes, we lost a generational player. But we had a returning all-american PG who just won BTPOY, one of the best returning shooters who has played significant minutes since stepping on campus, and a PF that many had him pegged to be good/great, 2 role players that played key bench minutes from last year and a back-up Center that has been in the program 4 years. Reloading to me means we are bringing in players to be something greater than a role player. We didn't sign or expect any of this before the season.....not even DJ and/or Catchings....maybe the reason he signed elsewhere.
I think we are trying to justify bad basketball. These core players know this team hasn't lived up to potential or seen much growth. I'm not sure what's going on, but myself and many are shocked to see this kind of product from a CMP team.
I don't know. Again my thoughts on Painter using the portal were prospective. He couldn't this year bc of numbers. Colvin and Heide regressing wasn't expected. Catchings being a basket case and DJ breaking his leg wasn't either. Hard to blame Painter for all of that.
I will say this hasn't been his finest player development season. Colvin, Heide and Furst are all 4 star recruits and none of them have played to that level. Loyer is Loyer. He's the same guy. Some of that is good, some is not. How has he gained no weight and still lost so often on defense? Cox had a couple of bursts and then a long streak of nothing. Harris has improved a bit.
There's a fair amount of theoretical talent on this team that for whatever reason isn't fully actualizing.
we don't play team ball, make sure the big 2 get their stats , Loyer is a Dow Jones player , every one else stands around and watches, there is no cutting to basket not much movement
Defensively we are small and weak on the outside with no shot blocking inside. Offensively its just braden and renn. Nobody will or can penetrate and break teams down. We really needed heide and colvin to improve and take starter level minutes. They can physically help on both ends. They just havent.
Could be my gold and black glasses, but I think Colvin is getting there. It gives me some hope for next week and even more for next year.
The good news is that teams won't be as familiar with Purdue. The bad news is that Purdue is last in two point defense. I do think rest can help the players, but right now there isn't the confidence there was early in the season due to losing. I think we saw the floor or close to it last night. Michigan and USC loaded up on Trey, but there was a tighter called game against USC than Michigan and Michigan's size (height and weight ) allowed a more physical D on Trey while wearing him down a bit. The Michigan players on the perimeter defended the perimeter with some hard closeout, that Purdue was not able to counter.
Giccari showed some promise last night and more speed than we have seen outside of Braden and so that was a positive going forward and believe Cam and Myles have improved as the season went on. Many have typed concerns about almost always starting with a two man game with a high ball screen and I too would like to see a bit more away from that. I'm unsure how the coaches are set up on D other than Johnson and Lusk, but those are two very experienced coaches on D that have been successful in the past. FWIW, I caught Lou (Shasha's dad) before the last game and told me Sasha loves the coaching and spends countless hours watching teams...even D2 for out of bound plays. I also have typed a lot that IMO Purdue switches some screens it doesn't have to which results in some match up issues. I know the switching is to try to contain the dribble and conserve energy, but sometimes the matchups are not good for Purdue and I'm unsure the overall approach couldn't be tweaked a bit more. The good that has happened I believe is that Matt will have an idea what areas need help and I expect that he will bring in 1-3. Without any help I think Purdue is much better next year, but I think Matt will increase the chances of being much better by looking at particular skill sets.
I think Myles has made steps in his overall game and do believe he will be substantially better next year. All this complicates who and how many Matt may want in the Portal if he can find his fits. I think he adds a 5 and could get one with one to two years to play. Getting a four is a bit murky as is a 3 because of Trey, Fletcher, Jack, Myles, Cam and Burgess. I like CJ and Giccari, but a one year player at the 2 might be a need since CJ/Giccari are both freshmen and would still get some minutes and a lot of minutes their last two years. Course none of this means Matt can get what he wants and that the improvement is great enough that those over recruited are okay for the short term improvement,
Look at this honestly. Our so called role players are fine , Miles, Cam , Harris and Cox played well. It’s our leaders Braden, KR and Fletch who have been really struggling. I believe it’s because of the minutes and stress we put on these 3. Renn is forcing everything, Loyer is playing terrible on ball defense and when not hitting his shots is a liability. And Braden is just plain tired, his burst isn’t there and he’s short on his shots which means tires legs. Paint has to accept the blame because he didn’t develop a bench when he needed to. Also we need a scoring 4 man , I would start Cam and bring Caleb off the bench
Agree to a point. I think if Jacobson would have been able to play all year and gain experience, he would at least make a driver think about coming inside at this stage of the season. Even Berg causes some driving shooters to adjust a bit underneath when he's in. I think Jacobson going down hurt most because we were weak on options after that, other than TKR and Furst to guard the inside, we have proven little help there. That size would have aided us. Heide has had some decent rebounding games, but gets killed by bigger bodies who have some quickness. At this point opponents have learned how to play us, especially if we aren't hitting 3s. It is, what it is.
We have become 100% predictable. PNR top of the key, TKR misses short because he is tired or Braden misses his fade away because he is gassed.

I guess I don't understand why Smith played 39 minutes in a blowout. He's clearly gassed. At some point you pull the starters.
Kind of think we need to go back to the Colvin and Heide lineup and rachet up the tempo. Furst is a black hole on offense and im not sure what he gives us on defense either. Cox is very cold right now. Ride the hot hands in Colvin and Heide.
Furst gives us rebounding... sometimes and the ability to guard two bigs... sometimes. Not much else.

They basically are the team. You can’t have 2 guys taking 42 shots in a game and the rest taking 24 total. You can’t have that and be successful.
Yes, maybe, and assumed Jacobson would be somewhat of a factor underneath. We were weak underneath after he went down. No good back-up option was there. I'm not saying he would have been a star, but he would have given us some cushion there. I also think he may have taken some of TKR's fouls away, if that makes any sense.
Yea. TKR is by no means any sort of defensive post presence. Jacobsen would have definitely helped there. Painter definitely needed to quit the Berg train very early and went to Burgess to try and get him more ready.

When we were flying high and in the Top 10, most of those absolutely makeable looks were going in.
Those shots are no longer going in now— plain and simple.
IMO you can’t oversell CMP’s observation of how much harder it is to properly set the defense off a missed shot.
Well it really didn't become a blowout until very close to the end. It was 72-61 with 5 minutes left. You're certainly not going to pull him then. So what are you going to get, 2 minutes of rest when it was 80-64? At that point they weren't playing hard anymore anyway.
FYI - Yesterday was the 4th time all year that Loyer scored less than 9 points. He's been more consistent in that regard than Braden.
