Purdue at Rutgers: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Purdue played iits collective ass off tonight- on both ends.

Were the 3-point percentage and the FTs substandard?? Absolutely- BUT

They brought a level of intensity that has not existed since the Alabama game.

They are a mediocre team without that!
Maybe not a really good team, but better than mediocre IMO

And yet we still won big. If we shoot our average today (FT and 3's) we win by 30+, and Braden ends up with 20+ assists. He was making all the right passes tonight.

Yea ...was feeling sorry for Smith the way he was perfectly setting up open shooters and they would brick it from deep or fumble it away underneath. Probably should have had 20 assists if he was playing with guys (other than Loyer) that could help him out more.

Every player who played scored outside of Colvin.
I thought the Ole Miss game was bc a turning point for him after an inconsistent start offensively. But it seems it was just part of the inconsistency. Hasn't scored in 3 of 8 games since and averaging 3.5 points, 10-36(27.8%) from the floor and 5-26(19.2%) from 3.

I won’t quibble over labels/ superlatives…

But I will assert that this team won’t beat anyone good without the level of intensity and rebounding- especially on the defensive end— that we witnessed tonight.

Agree, but Painter would say there's no reason you can't come with that and more every darn game - in fact, it's expected. And, it starts getting contagious.

Colvin just has a bit of a sophomore slump offensively. He does everything else well so he isn’t killing us

?

He does nothing else well. He cant dribble or oenetrate or get to the rim at all. He plays solid defense but not better than cox or harris. If he cant hit a wide open catch and shoot 3 he is worthless

Perhaps I’m not as learned as others on this board who have forgotten more about basketball than I will ever understand, but IMO tonight’s effort on defense was something that has been missing much of this year.

Regardless of how we execute on offense— we won’t beat anyone good moving forward without the level of defensive buy-in we saw tonight .

Defense totally canceled out Purdue’s failure in TWO critical offensive categories.

Yes, wasn't just tonight though. Since Cox & Furst was inserted it been good. Colvin good on D when in too. Loyer is even playing better D for several games. Smith has been good on D, an area not his best. Heide not there yet, but he will get there some day, IF he wants to continue to play

and when you add that kind of defensive effort with taking care of the ball (single digit turnovers), your chances go up even when the shots aren't falling at a high rate.....

I give a game ball to Furst. I don’t about any of his stats other than minutes. He had another 30 minute game allowing the other players to play their more natural positions. It’s a winning combination

Purdue up to 42nd on KP for defense

And also helps when Rutgers were really careless with the ball….did Harper get them all sick as well?

Purdue played really hard on D as well as the boards. Caleb has been huge for a few games. Last night his quickness and size provided more of a matchup on Bailey. No doubt Matt will praise the effort. However, if I'm pikiel I'm concerned that there is little activity from Harper and Bailey when they don't have the ball. I'm seeing more offensive continuity in other players. Bailey is gifted with his size, ball handling for that size and shooting, but he right now doesn't do enough away from the ball and he is easy to "locate" and sag off as needed. Harper may suffer from similar things, but with him possibly being sick I'm unsure. Either way Pikiel has to figure out how to use those two (doesn't want labeled as not knowing how to use talent for future recruits) with the rest of the team. Right now my mind goes to Pink Floyd

Ban Myles from taking 3's. Now.
Shoot ANY SHOT BUT A THREE!
Learn to get into the flow of the game doing the little things.
"Ban" is a hard thing to want, but I know and agree with the premise. I mean UNLESS you are so wide open and have to take a three ball...get in the flow. Last night we saw Cam drive once to the rim and the game before we saw Myles get into the lane. Both need to add that by being more observant of when it is there, as well as playing D, setting screens, seeing the court and making good passes as well as rebounding...so many things other than a 3 ball.

BTW, IMO we are seeing more teams scoring in the lane other than Purdue. Teams and players are getting better at the mid range game since teams are really 1) running players off the line 2) not helping off of three ball shooters as much 3) not being able to get all the way to the rim...and now have open shots in the lane...
