Purdue at Nebraska: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

NB outplayed us the entire game. They deserved the win. We are not going to win every game and having a complete meltdown similar to Arkansas and Northwestern is short sided. We are still a top 5 team. Turnovers killed us. Fletch has been MIA for 2 games. NB couldn't miss. I was glad to see Painter start Gillis and Heide in the second half. I still think Colvin needs minutes....never know when he could ring up a few 3s when we need them.

I thought the early fouls against Edey in the 1st half were questionable at best. Changed the whole tone of the game imo. I only watched the 1st half (couldn't take anymore) but other than Gillis, we didn't seem ready to play. We didn't seem to have fire tonight. I don't know why. I hope we have a better effort against IU a week from now.

I have no idea why Morton gets minutes. He's in no way the reason for us getting our asses handed to us tonight, but we have got to get Colvin further along.
Colvin will play when he earns it in practice, right now he is almost completely lost on defense. Purdue is something like 48-4 over the last 50+ games. Best in their history, hard to ask for more than that but we are fans so we will. A couple L's are going to happen, but this team is good, really good. I'm interested to see how they bounce back against IU. Would love to make a statement against IU.

Great game by Nebraska, one of the 4-6 loses that Purdue will have this year, take the L and move on. Let’s be honest, no one was beating the Huskers tonight.
I think Purdue helped them. Players were not mentally ready. Couldn’t stop them and couldn’t hit shots when open. Zach was not mentally engaged and hasn’t been for a whole game the last three. I know they had two on him, but he spent last year with two on him a lot. Regroup. Some people wanted Cam to get minutes and he got them tonight. He had some bad calls go against him and made a bad mistake on the trigger man under their basket where Mason got score on and then the guy hit the FT.

Can’t say anyone played well the whole game

Because he does play decent defense. The problem is we struggle with players who can both play offense and defense on the perimeter. Jones is our best but he struggles against size. Smith is ok but not great. Loyer is horrible on defense. If we could Brundlefly Loyer and Morton we'd be unstoppable.

What's the back up plan for when Edey is getting 2-3 guys hanging on him and shots aren't falling? I am honestly asking because I don't know.

We lost to a 17 seed because there was no plan B. Neb won tonight and played great no doubt. But what is the philosophy when your national player of the year gets swarmed? Just keep jacking 3's? How did that turn out tonight and against the 17 seed?

With all that being said Zach has to play better. He has got to speed up his process of the game.

I thought he got a couple of minutes first half?

How do you know Colvin sucks at practice ? About time Heide gets minutes. Everytime I bring up Loyers lack of defense I get static and same with Morton’s offense. Nebraska is going to win 100 % of their games when shooting 60% from 3, but our defense wasn’t good tonight

Painter is so slow at making adjustments and lineups changes when changes/adjustments are clearly obvious...low basketball IQ at the helm.
The only change to make was to concede that Edey was hurting more than helping and matching them up but that was never going to happen and quite frankly our players weren't playing well enough for that to have worked anyways. So overall this was a collective problem with how this team is built then Painter not making changes in game. Certainly there were some things I don't understand. Why he goes into the first half with three timeouts instead of breaking up their run. Why Morton is out there on a the offensive series of the first half. Other stuff, but it didn't decide the game.

This is and will be our Achilles heel, teams pack paint, date us to shoot well and then force us to chase on screens on defense and shoot a ton of threes. It obviously doesn't always work but if the other team is hitting threes, it's pretty effective because we struggle to match.

It's going to be the strat going forward for any team with a big that can draw out Edey and shooters. Until we figure it out, it's going to be our weakness.

It's impossible to both pack the lane and guard all perimeter players with crisp passing.

I can remember several times Keady pretty much yanking all of his starters in a game like this. The game at Illinois many years ago, our bench brought us back from a 20 point or so deficit to win. Keady let them play. I think you have to play the guys who are playing well that night. Can't just keep playing guys who aren't producing in a particular game out of habit. Rotations should be fluid, not fixed. I was glad to see Gillis and Heide start the second half.

Still as good of a team as there is in college basketball, and not always gonna play well but defense is something you should bring every night. Also thought Zach brought the ball down to much. But Gillis and Jones should not lead the team in shots taken.

I don't mind this loss. Neb played great and deserved the win. Every team will be up for us - if you are elite, you have to be able to defend that level of play every game. We just don't have the elite talent to take the punches every night. While TKR is getting better - most 4's in the conference are better than he is.

Yes - '83 in Champaign-Urbana.....Purdue trailed the whole game and took its first and only lead on this banker from Rowinski....our dorm erupted.

Too much for a phone but is Purdue stopping them as well? Are the shot good looks and just missing? Do you believe that if you keep shooting you will start making them or do you think this game is different and abandon many open 3 balls and try to get to the rim with more drives… or war in the paint with Purdues size and rebounding…but if you believe that the 3 ball will start going down you stay the course and of course less fouls on the other team, less clock stoppage and are totally dependent on the 3 ball.

I can’t really point to something Purdue did well tonight. Kids not ready and always sorry after but you can’t go back and replay a game. Also, give some credit to the winning team for making winning plays

Why no Colvin? Can hit a 3, see if he can help spark a ralley at this point.
Maybe even ramp up some pressure and change the tempo. Plan A was clearly not happening tonight. Zero minutes in second half for Colvin was just ridiculous at least Heide got some extended minutes. Heide and Gillis need to start the next game, that would wake some folks up.

Would not have mattered of Edey had a great game. They just could moss from 3 and almost every close shot when in as well.

Championship teams shoot well. If you can't knock down shots you are going home.

2 points in the first 5 minutes and a ton of missed wide open 3's in the first half. I knew we weren't going to win after the first 10 minutes. We. Just didn't look into it at all.

Purdue just got beat. They never lost the game, but got beat. If Morton is not the reason…which he wasn’t why did zpurdue get beat? O wasn’t good. D wasn’t good. Rebounding wasn’t good. Team wasn’t sharp. Team wasn’t on same page. If those are true you can’t blame a single player, nor can you believe a single player that doesn’t get a lot of minutes change everything.

What would cause all of those issues? Team wasn’t sharp…wasn’t ready to get hit by a team ready to play their best game of the year. There is a bit of human nature when comfortable and to lose sight how they got comfortable and what it took until it is gone…and then it is too late. Happens to us all, but easier when younger. Players may think they were ready, but they weren’t.

2nd time this year that I called an early upset alert against the Boilers....2/2. Cashing in at the cage! Triple team Edey...the other four Purdue players are not good enough to beat you. The strategy to beat this team...

It was probably Edey's worst game in more than 2 years...basically a non-factor. Reminded me of the FDU game.

Let's see how this team and especially the Coach responds or will the Coach remain consistent/persistent as always.
