Purdue at MIchigan: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Yup, it was an ugly win. But it’s bettter than a loss. Just ask Duke, Creighton, UCONN and Arizona.

Michigan players’ manhood was probably really challenged by their coaching staff after the ass kicking they took at Mackey. They seemed gassed at the end of the first half, but somehow still fought like hell in the 2nd half. We probably played down a little and they played up as much as they could.

Aren't we leading (or close to it) the country in 3pt %?
We are currently in second in 3 point percentage. It’s hard to believe after watching today’s game, but every other NCAA team except one is actually worse than Purdue.

They've been competitive @ home most of the year....yes. I think Purdue could have made it a little easier on themselves, but they just couldn't make enough shots to really open it up.

Good game for Smith to get some hard knock lessons on how he may get defended.
You see teams are starting to really hedge out on Smith with whoever is guarding Edey. It's been working lately and CMP has got to find some ways to counter that.

Just got done watching on recorded YTTV. Terrible pick and roll defense. Playing defense like that against Houston or Uconn wont be good enough. With that being said, proud of the team battling through a very game Michigan team.

Said same thing. Our D was generally spineless, just watched Michigan attack and pick and roll.

So weird to see such a toothless Purdue basketball team on the defensive side of the ball.

Also 1 on 1 defense was pretty bad as well. Overall not a good day at all on defense but fortunately the refs were actually reffing and calling most of the fouls on Ede which let our offense get a foot hold early in the game.

Those teams "capable" of such will want to do that (hedge hard and way out). THAT keeps him from hitting Zach as easy AND takes away his mid range game. Also, teams that maybe can't turn you over will employ a zone press to try to slow the ball. Those two things are given IMO and trying to affect Zach's play mostly and Braden's second.

Personally, once the big is moving I would like for Braden to take a leg or body enough for contact. I always held the belief that once the D is moving...particularly on a drive...don't go wide, but punish the D rather than them making you go so wide. If wide and Braden is able to make a quick pass, then their big may be too far out to recover. Course, if they don't blow the whistle then if you are not careful and get too deep you can get trapped. X Simpson at Michigan a few years ago was very good at holding Haas on him since he was a threat to score and allowing Teske to move out around 8-10 feet in the lane. Had X been a better shooter Teske could have stayed lower due to Hass being pulled out farther and so you always have the ability to hold the switch as you want. You could always have the strongside guy in the corner cut baseline off a screen by Trey on the opposite block to the top of the arc for a shot or to hit Trey (most likely) in the middle of the lane for war in the paint...maybe even hit Zach if he has sealed his man due to the over play when the ball was in Braden's hand before the cutter cleared out. Trey and Zach can screen for each other depending on the D. No doubt Matt has a few adjustments he can make. Not every team can do the things that you want to do with Zach though.

Defense was not sharp. That should be addressed this week. But when Purdue has a week off, my impression is that they always come out flat. Hoping they change my perception.
