It's a balancing act for Painter for sure......Loyer had 29.
Hard to quantify mental fatigue as well. Smith's shots down the stretch were primarily off being short - that's usually one of the signs of fatigue.....now, with experience, there's ways to play through that, but it aint easy. Smith gave it all he had last night - just wasn't enough in a game where he came tantalizingly close to the school's second triple double performance.
In hindsight (which is usually 20/20 or better), maybe you let Cox run the show for a few minutes with TKR, although he doesn't have nearly the chemistry experience as Braden Smith with him.....but it might have worked better than TKR on the bench. Can't worry about it now.
Credit Illinois for really running Loyer off of a lot of sets.....still encouraged with the effort last night IF the guys don't hang their heads after wilting in the last two minutes. Heide's contribution didn't show up in the box score, but he made a difference on the defensive end when he wasn't getting taken to Whistle City.
The issue was Illinois had five guys who could score and get their own shots. All five in double digits, little from their bench. But sharing the scoring load and activity to get those scores keeps everyone fresher. Most of Purdue's load was just two guys with a dash of Loyer. Purdue's two were worn out, Illinois was fresher with five guys sharing the load.
Painter alluded it to this in his postgame presser. Illinois is a dangerous team because of how many 3s they shoot. They didn't make a great percentage last night as a whole, but they made them when it counted down the stretch.
How many T's have been called this season for hanging on the rim? Colvin even looked down to not land on anybody. Pure homer call.
I thought they were in a good spot at halftime being down two shooting so poorly from three. The law of averages played in their favor at crunch time.
Exactly— shooters will regularly get this call.
Illini operated pretty much hacked Purdue with impunity when they were on defense, but got multiple phantom calls on Furst and especially Heide when they were on offense…
Purdue failed to make them pay for their obsession with chucking bad threes early, and had nothing left in the tank to respond when those prayers began getting answered.
Not sure what that has to do with Illinois 3 point shooting?
It was probably the second worst call of the game. But Illinois missed the FT so had absolutely no impact on the outcome.
BTW, Purdue fans crying about officiating has to be one of the most hilarious things I've seen in a while. The Loser's Lament....
Easy to say when you win. Personally, I thought there were equal bad calls or missed calls both ways. Grand scheme of things, didn't affect the outcome.
The biggest call against Purdue that I didn't like was Heide's 5th. I didn't see a foul. And then he wasn't on the floor to switch on KJ when he hit the big shot. Furst was and he can't close out as well.
2nd biggest call was the travel on Burgess. Any name player and that doesn't get called. I don't think it was a travel in 2025 period.
