Purdue at Illinois: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

10 point lead coming out of under 12:00 timeout and TKR is still on bench. Huge mistake by CMP. They cut it to 3 before he could get him back in and it was dogfight the rest of the way.
burgess struggled. I do think Giccari made a bad decision to pass it in traffic to Burgess. He just not physically ready for that and I think Burgess did not travel when he scored the two points. It didn’t look like to me. It looked like you did a little side step, but no travel.

He was getting hyped as Big Ten POY

That type of player should be able to close the game

He just isn’t that guy right now which is a big reason they didn’t win the Big Ten
BPOY shouldn't have to be his bar every game. The rest of the team needs to show up not named TKR.

Not exactly hard to predict what we were going to do. Pretty sure everyone in the building knew TKR was going to get it and try to back him down. The only surprise was Illinois didn't do it sooner.
They were holding tight to three-point shooters that’s why he was so open. Purdue just kept feeding him . This is why I was kinda hoping maybe they’d leave some space so Braden could drive to the basket. It’s fouled he goes the line, but Trey had been working well. They went one time too much to the well

Yep.

Finish 5-5 on the road in conference.....lost the last four, but had the lead at halftime in three of them and trailed by two in the other. Just getting worn down in the second half of those games it appears.

Still a lot to play for, but they likely made the path a little tougher now.
Who cares about BT T. Lose 1st game and rest.

Love Smith, but we have to get him some timely rest in the game. Just asking too much to have him carry that load and expect him to hit outside shots late i the game. Legs are gone.

I also like him off the ball at times.

I know it's a conundrum for Painter - he likes to stick with his proven guns and ride them as long as he can to force the opponent, but he also knows there's physical and mental battle fatigue. This conference is a human meat grinder.

Oh and refs ruined another game and painter has yet to do anything. That is 6 out of last 7 games refs have single handedly helped our opponent massively
Come on, man. It was a great game. Big Ten refs are A-W-F-U-L, but they usually screw everyone equally. You were gifted 3 points at the FT line when Jakucionis didn’t even touch your shooter, and the announcers and plenty of non-partisan folks on social media were calling it an atrocious call.

Incompetent Big Ten refs giveth, and they taketh away!!

It will be interesting if Painter gets asked about it - you have to give big guys a rest at some point, but I wonder if he's second guessing trying to use an extended time out to do it - he was not in foul trouble this game.
Would like to hear his answer. The whole idea of taking your top player out BEFORE the tv timeout is to let them rest during the timeout and then back in. Why you would not put him in after the timeout is crazy. IMO, the game was lost in that next 2-3 minute stretch. Had a chance to push out a 10 point lead, instead they closed to 3 and all momentum was lost.

Oh, I have no doubt whatsoever, but that ball is gonna be as big as room in Matt’s mind tonight. Course Purdue week side has their head on a swivel and cut those passes to Riley as he cuts through the lane earlier in the game play may not have mattered quite as much.

Well, I hear what you're saying, but I don't think the Purdue players or coaches feel that way.

Painter said they could use the rest (if they got the double bye), and he doesn't practice three days in a row during the season.

The three-point shot against fletch was a bad call. I would trade that call for some other calls though in a split second.

What is a little surprising is on this last play when they were feeding tray prod pull all the people to one side of the court so that to remove some of that help defense instead Cox was on his right hand side and Riley left Cox and double down on treys drive that was a little surprising too now was that a mistake by Cox or did the coaches not think of that… who knows?

TKR and Smith were outstanding….the other players, not so. Sure…Loyer scores but how many points does he give up defensively . If stats were kept….I would say he would have a negative contribution.

Definitely some sub optimal substitutions this game.

To be fair, he definitely hit Loyer's hand. But refs didn't miss a bunch of shots in the last two minutes.

I'd be fine with it if he wouldn't disappear for such long stretches

I get what you're saying about Loyer defense, add to that zero assists and zero rebounds. Ideally you would get more from your 3rd best player. Especially with the minutes he played.

I think the big thing in this game is that, while we were recovering from most of Illinois' little runs the whole game, the last one they took the lead on. I think that was huge that they got over the top. Now it's a possession by possession game, and they hit the big shot. We didn't, and turned the ball over on the biggest possession.

I had some friends over tonight so I wasn't watching as close as normal, but I might want to go back and see all of Heide's fouls. When he got to 4 I had no idea he was at 4. His 5th was phantom, and it was huge, because he would have been switched onto KJ and not Furst when he hit the big shot. Would his defense have been better? I would think so.

On that note, I thought we didn't contest 3s very well. Braden especially had his hands down a lot on closeouts, most of which they hit.

Frankly, as it comes to the NCAA Tournament prospects, this game didn't bother me much. I really thought we played well. An 8-point loss doesn't begin to tell the story. We really controlled the game more than vice versa. Like someone said above, some bounces go our way and we win this game. Yes, it will force us to play on Thursday next week, but maybe we could use a good win against, say, Nebraska or someone like that. Then a dog-fight type of game against Wisconsin or Michigan or Maryland. We will be better for it.

One of those timeouts Cox scored underneath the basket and I thought Purdue was a really good shape at that time
I meant the timeout before halftime and then the other one with around a minute left. They choked the last minute of both halves. Can't argue that.

It's been a theme. Several games this conference season we've struggled to close the first half. The IU game in Bloomington is actually the outlier. I'm not sure I understand it. I mean tonight, Riley hit a three at the gun on a great step-back over Braden. Not much you can do about that. I will say I was worried about Braden's height tonight if he ever got switched off of Boswell, and it happened plenty. It was too easy for Riley, KJ and Brickhouse to shoot over him.

On top of all that, a really bad beat if you took Purdue and the points.

Could be Nebraska/Northwestern winner v. Purdue in Game 5 (second game TH). Then, maybe Wisconsin rematch on F to get to SF round (and possibly Michigan State). Still haven't seen enough consistency against the tougher match-ups - when the execution is there, Boilers can hang with anybody in the conference. We shall see.

I never say refs lost the game unless it’s a last second bad call in an even game. But, how many times was TKR actually fouled in the game? He took three free throws.

I saw Painter's face after the turnover after the 3 pt shot from Jac. He was pissed. I image he was thinking "f*ck f*ck f*ck we lost all 4 of our big time road games down the stretch!" I am calling it now Purdue will not be a transfer-less team next season. There is no way Painter is not going to get support for the big 3's last dance. He is a competitor and absolutely hates the feeling of what happened tonight and how the 2nd half of big ten play has panned out.

Need to find a closer on offense

Team can be very good if they can find a SF that can score and defend this offseason

Smith has proven to be very effective 2nd or 3rd option
LOL. We won’t have the money to add a better scorer than Braden or TKR. We’ll have to empty the war chest to keep them.

I blame Painter, and I'm in his corner for using his same sub pattern and not looking more at Waddel and others when PU had huge leads in games won. Myles and Heide are not getting the job done though Painter keeps playing them in the same spot every game, Harris plays better than either (IMO) and should be first off the bench. Burgess will be serviceable the next couple of years, but he's not good enough to get major minutes.

When the season began, I thought this team was at least an elite 8 team, but now I'll be happy with a Sweet 16. And why are there no plays for Caleb on offense?

Someone off the bench has to score consistently and no one so far has done that.

This is what bothers me. Boswell and Riley were barely touched several times and they got a whistle. Several of Heide's fouls stick out as being very week.

Does TKR seek contact? Sure. However he has a body on him most of the time when he goes up. For Purdue to dominate points in the Paint, but ILL to be in the bonus all game doesn't really add up, especially when Purdue isn't playing a physical Tenn/Houston style.

ILL fans talk about the Loyer 3, but I'd trade that for even whistle rest of game.
