Possible Academic Casualties?

Well, I guess we have our answer on Wright and Mackey. Disappointing.

I guess all those people that said we had too many WRs a couple of years ago are not saying that now with early NFL entries, transfers, injuries, now academics, etc.

There's no excuse for losing eligibility due to grades considering the resources at the kids' disposal. I had Anthony Spencer in a class I TA'd at Purdue. You could tell he made full use of the academic support the school gave athletes. The guy was obviously an NFL talent but he showed up to class, participated as much as anyone else, and did all of his work. As much as college football is the minor leagues for the NFL, it still takes a little "want to" to take care of responsibilities.
I 2nd this. Seriously, these kids have obligations to their team, their fans, and the school that gave them a chance. If there are outside circumstances, as was mentioned previously, I get the hardship. Otherwise, no excuses are valid.

"... all those people ..."

Really just a couple of people come to mind. One hates Brohm as if Brohm stole his girlfriend, and the other doesn't understand rostering (or developing) a football team to begin with.

Agree for the most part. I would add, or argue that these guys' primary and upmost responsibility is to themselves. Regardless of any professional athletic aspirations and possibilities they all will benefit greatly from succeeding in the classroom and ultimately earning a degree. After all, to paraphrase Animal House "...don't cost nuthin'"

Twenty or thirty years ago I had one of our starting offensive linemen in one of my undergrad courses. He was there every day, sat in the front row, and I could see the effort he made to take notes in tiny scrawl-like letters. He passed the course with a "D" (this was in the days before Purdue implemented "plus" and "minus" grades for final grades) only because, for a couple of years, I experimented with a group project in that class where all group members got the same grade (as long as they had pulled their share of the load).
He might have fared better at another university, but, truth be told, he really didn't belong at Purdue.

As I previously stated, there should be more opportunities for the TE's
I hear ya, but don’t know if they can make up for Wright and Bell out! Maybe the guys who haven’t played will do ok, hope they are in sync with O’Connel and hang on to the ball.

not saying they will make up for those guys but the wealth will be more spread around, I'm hoping for Sullivan to get alot of action ( I like players from Tejas)

All for the new guys to show what they can do, just no drops and a few tough catches would be nice! Maybe the running game will be ok , that would help alot

since the players who entered the portal can't play for their old teams, it would be nice if they could play for their new teams. that would solve a lot of personnel problems for a lot of teams. and to the nay sayers, many football players at a lot of schools played in a football game in August before their academic school semester started.

Ill be the naysayer here...
There are SO many issues here:
1. Players are playing under current year scholarship numbers (both annual and total). Not the same as playing in August, they were part of the recruiting class
2. The biggest issue I see is you are inviting players to transfer to play in a good bowl game. Cincinnati can say go to the portal and transfer here, you can play in the playoffs! Teams like Illinois who missed the playoffs would be purged of players who want to get to a bowl game.
3. These players just took final exams like two weeks ago... it is unrealistic to expect them to move to their new team and learn the defense/offense in 2-3 weeks

At the end of the day the teams have up to 85 scholarship players and a bunch of walk-ons capable of contributing. Most of the freshmen still have a game to play without losing a year of eligibility and they have been playing for a full season and could be ready to contribute. People are freaking out about Purdue's WRs but we still have Sheffield, Anthrop, a dinged up Thompson, Sullivan, Burks, Terrell, and 5-6 walkons. We will be fine.

I’m thinking about the overall big picture, not Purdue. Many teams that have canceled their bowl appearance have cited the loss of players via the portal as one of the reasons for not having enough players. Maybe the entry into the portal needs to be tweaked with a different timeframe. I saw where Michigan picked up a grad transfer from Virginia. But he didn’t announce changing schools until after his team’s bowl game was canceled. To me he did the right thing. His move showed some class and respect to his teammates before moving on.
Ultimately it’s the player’s decision. I just believe the process could be improved.

I’m sure the transfer portal did not help but if Covid was not a factor there would be no teams canceling. I also don’t think any meaningful games will be cancelled, if anything postponed.

We are going to need some "new" WRs to step up. Who is everyone hearing is having the best practices of Sullivan, Burks, Terrell or someone else I have not listed?
