For fans who are upset that Painter didn’t hit the portal this season (or those who will be upset when Purdue ultimately loses in the NCAAT), listen to the first two minutes of the first interview linked below to understand his rationale.

This was always a building year where he was committed to developing DJ, the two freshmen guards and Cam and Myles and adding a transfer, particularly a one year guy, would have taken away from that. We can second guess that approach, but he’s always building not only for the current year, but also to keep the program healthy in subsequent years.

We know that he’ll go to the portal after this season but my bet is he won’t do so in a way that puts the future of the program in jeopardy to chase a NC next year.

There is a reason he is one of the best in college basketball and we fans ... are not. Let's be honest, there isn't one of us on here or any forum that could even hold Painters jockstrap let alone coach at one tenth of the level he does. That is just fact.

I mean in a building year the team is still a freakin 4 seed.. Where other schools buy an entire team and can't even make the tourney... I'd say Painter knows what he is doing. Fans will always have ideas they think are better/magic bullets/some-answer-Painter-doesn't-see and that is fine, that is what these forums are for... but I have little doubt that whatever we say on here Painter has thought of a LOOONG time ago and is thinking long term where we want instant gratification. Basically as a fanbase... we are spoiled by the great program Painter has created.

That is a great listen. Thanks for posting it!

Agree. There’s nothing wrong with having a different opinion as fans, but it’s good to understand why things are done the way they are.

I agree, Matt Painter is a great coach, I also agree about the some fans on these forums, they are turning into IU mental midgets. You read IU forums, they are never satisfied, coaches are never good enough, players are never good enough, its a circus on steroids, yet some fans would like to mimic those losers! Selling your soul for a NC is not worth it. My only concern is that Matt gets tired of the current makeup of "G" league mania and hangs it up.

Not only is Painter interested in developing the team as players, but also as young men. That's hard to do if your roster turns over 50+% each year. So maybe it means we have a "down" year such as this (the horrors, a 4 seed!). But I'm all for continuing to develop players and young men, and hopefully graduates of our fine institution. If it means we don't make it back to the promised land, so be it. It's better than learning a new team each year and rooting for players that eventually move on and never graduate from Purdue.

I really like CMP and think he's a great representative for our school and players. Glad we have him.

I'm assuming for this discussion that TKR and Smith both stay next year:

With a 1st team AA and a 1st team B1G player, he needs to do whatever is needed to maximize the chances of a FF next year. Sure, there is a risk that bringing in portal guy/guys could fail, but you can't let this opportunity go by. You just don't get this chance that often. We aren't Duke where you just get another batch of studs every year. Roll the dice and go get the dudes we need to have a legit chance at a run for it all. I trust he can get it done!

Agree that he needs to hit the portal and it sounds like he will. I disagree with your statement of 'whatever is needed' as the most extreme approach would be to bring in 5+ one-year guys without regard for keeping or developing current players.

I generally agree that MP and staff should be all in on maximizing their chances for success next year, but they also must (and will) identify which of their underclassmen they will prioritize and how that impacts their portal activity. I think (hope?) they can go get a couple of 23-year-old guys in the portal without sacrificing the future of the program but they need to keep developing some of these younger guys next year as well, IMO.

Do whatever is needed means whatever CMP thinks needs to be done to maximize a FF run chance. If that means he thinks we need 3 guys, then go get them. Do not be overly concerned about the "future". Next year is a unique opportunity. Yes, there is a chance that it could not work out and you could possibly lose a younger guy because he wasn't happy with how it affected him. What is alternative? Play it safe and run it back next year with the same guys? That would be the "safe" play but I don't think he will do that. 2 guys minimum is what I think he gets.

I mean I could hold Painter's jockstrap. I wouldnt, that is gross.

What I couldnt do is recruit as well, coach as well, develop players as well, ect, but I could hold his jockstrap.

Also, why they hell is our coach even wearing a jockstrap? He is coaching, no need to wear one.

I agree that MP will aggressively go after at least two guys, a big and likely a combo guard with a ball-handling ability and possibly a third if he can get a Tonje / Claude-type scoring wing if he can get the right guy.

It may be semantics, but I guess I was saying that if I were truly only concerned about next year I might try to double up on each of those positions, recognizing that some of these portal signees will be hit and miss, and tell everyone outside of Braden, Trey and probably Fletch that everything is up for grabs. I don't think he'll do that because he will want to ensure that his top young guys have some role. If the guys he brings in are better than the young guys they'll play more, but I don't see him bringing in hoards of new guys and potentially fully push the young guys to the bench. Doesn't sound like you'd expect to see that either.

I just want to see CMP do what he thinks gives us the best chance for a championship next year. Don't play if safe, go for it next year the best way you know how. I personally think that is going to be with 2-3 portal players.

We have a very unique opportunity to take advantage of a 1st team AA and an HM AA returning. Don't let that slip by.

So northside reveals himself as actually Tim Brando 😂 😂 😂
