OT: Maryland-IU

Brey wouldn't even crack the top 15 of realistic options. The last 2 coaching searches we landed a Final 4 coach from a major conference, and our program is in much better shape today than it was in either of them. We'll get someone elite assuming Glass doesn't blow it.
elite?
so basically iu would be limited to a coach K, cal, self, williams, izzo, pitino, or of course stevens
impressive

And they wonder why the rest of the world sees them as delusional.

I know we should focus on Purdue and their tough road game at Iowa, but I was just thinking that I can't imagine what the reaction will be if Rutgers goes into Ass. Hall and beats them this weekend. Lol, if that happens, the **** will truly hit the fan in the IU hoops world.

Can't happen...can it? It would be fun:)

As much as I would like to see it happen, I view the probability of an RU victory as very, very low. A confession: we watch Rutgers in my household as my wife is an undergraduate and graduate degree holder from Rutgers. Do not see a victory in AH happening, though it would cause a lot of heads to explode.

IU would have a good chance to be able to hire the following list of guys.

Marshall, Mack, McDermott, Holtman, A. Miller, Jacobson, Martin.

These guys would be longshots but I could see a small chance of hiring them depending on circumstances.

Few, Bennett, Donovan, S. Miller, Wright, Brey.

And these guys, their will would be a 0% chance of hiring.

Stevens, Izzo, Calipari, Self, Coach K, Williams.

Regardless. Upgrading from Crean won't be very hard.

Didn't Tony Bennett and Sean Miller turn down IU the last time you were searching?

They sure did. Which is why they are included in the "longshot" category. IU is a much better job than it was 9 years because they aren't under NCAA investigation and they have upgraded their facilities significantly. Their is a reason Crean was the best option but their will be a lot more the next time around.

Yes, but they were also six years removed from a Final Four and 21 years removed from a National Title. Those numbers now stand at 15 and 30.

I'm not sure that matters. You can win big at IU. As long as your coaches aren't named Mike Davis or Tom Crean.

You can win big at almost any school if you have the right coach. Examples are numerous: Wooden at UCLA, Georgetown and Thompson Sr., Syracuse and Boeheim, Florida and Donovan, VCU and Smart, UNLV and Tarkanian.

IU fans just seem to think that there is something special about IU. Remember, CCNY was once a blueblood. So was LIU, home of Knight mentor Claire Bee.

The only one who turned down the job was Bennett and that was because we had just fired his sister.
Yeah, that's not true. The Shadow of Knight still hangs over the coaching position there and guys like Few, McDermott et al have no reason to make that switch. Sorry but think along the lines of Fife or some other assistant. The only one you list I see as viable is Archie Miller and I hope that never happens.

Yeah. Coaching at Gonzaga and Creighton is better than coaching at Indiana. It's a gold mine job. Just as Purdue could be. Crean is just so bad, he can't tap into it.

Keep in mind that Glass really has IU in the black on funding. They can afford to pony up whatever $$ they need too, to get the right guy.

We'd probably pay $8M/yr for Stevens or Donovan. I'm not worried as we'll get someone very good. Probably not Stevens or Donovan but someone good. I hope I'm wrong on those two.

For those here that don't think IU is still a destination job you're in the minority. Pat Forde says it is elite and even put IU ahead of his beloved Louisville. "How good is the job: Elite. Everything is top-notch, including the home recruiting soil." Dakich has said recently that he could fill the position with a great coach within an hour and that Matta would bolt OSU in a heartbeat to coach IU. Not that we would want Matta of course.

Rival fans of IU will never admit that we could massively upgrade from Crean. Crean has just been a major flop. I dont see them offering 8M a year though. More like 4 or 5.

I'd take Matta about 9 years ago. Now....not so much.

Maybe there not their?
