OT: league competition

I watched the game. It was the same horrible system. No motion on offense. Guards driving off screens and I think TN would have set a record on blocks. There must have been 20 blocks. Ballo clogged the lane. There were a lot of kick out 3s and it was awful except Mgbako. Rice can’t shoot but can drive but wasn’t as effective with ballo clogging or defenders meeting him at the basket with no perimeter threat. Carlyle was as effective as Heide and renau was a non-factor. They weren’t any better on defense. TN missed a lot of high percentage shots and clearly looked like the better team. It also seemed TN was trying out different players and matchups whereas indiana was playing like it was the final four. JP Estrella hardly played and Cade Phillips played a lot and struggled.
As a “non-factor” Reneau has 21 pts on 8-12 fg, 1-1 3pt, 4-5 ft and 8 rebounds.

Both teams played their starters about 30 minutes. Estrella was coming off an injury and didn’t play much; Galloway and Tucker were out for IU.

UTenn is the ‘anti-Creighton’.

Elite defense and crappy offense.
And I’d say that “elite defense” while good, hacks the hell out of players daring the refs to call every foul (knowing they won’t). And then getting mad when they do run into a game where they’re being called for all their fouls 😂 …very similar to northwestern last year vs Purdue

I think with Reneau, it didn’t seem like it was THAT much improvement from last year, granted it was an exhibition game and first organized game of the year. Rice certainly made life easier for him and he could see his numbers increase because of that. But he also needs to stop trying to dribble outside on the perimeter cuz that’s going to cause issues if he continues to do that.

Tennessee finished with 8 blocks.

Rice finished with 20 on 7-14 from the floor and 6-8 from the FT line.

Reneau being so ineffective had 21 points and 8 rebounds. 8-12 from the field, 1-1 from 3(that took the lead) and 4-5 from the FT line.

Tennessee shot 8-35 from 3 at home. They did miss a lot of open shots, but Indiana did the same. They were incredibly unforgiving rims. You could hear the stiffness. Tennessee was also 10-24 inside the 3pt line. They shot 31% at home from the field.

Rice looked like the best player on the floor between either team and that was going up against Ziegler who is arguably the best perimeter defender in the nation.

As far as who played and how many... Tennessee played 9 guys. 6 of which played 20+ minutes. One other guy played 10, the rest single digit minutes.
Indiana played 9 guys. 6 of which played 18+ minutes. One other guy played 10 minutes, the rest single digit. Indiana was also missing Galloway and Tucker, which would have 10 and 11.

But tennessee barley played their starting center and also played Cade Phillips who was clearly struggling out there he has very little experience.

Rice played great. Most of his points were high probability shots. He could have been better if he wasn’t met at the rim so much.

Renau statistically had a good game . I probably only saw 80% of scoring plays and I’m sure I missed some but he didn’t have big play making like I saw out of rice. He will always score points but just meh.

Only 8 blocks were registered but there were several on fouls that were blocked that didn’t go against the stat sheet, there were a couple very questionably goal tending calls (announcers and tens of thousands of fans opinion, not just mine), some that they just got a piece of it, plus all those called as fouls. In all there were probably close to 20 shots at the basket that did not go in because of at least a deflection or shot altering to avoid it.

Felix Okpara is Tennessee's starting center and played 31 minutes.

Estrella is the big coming off injury that barely played -- about ten minutes. He averaged 5mpg and 1.6 ppg last year with zero starts and is Okpara's backup. Zeigler is UT's best player and played 37 minutes.

And Rice's best stat was zero turnovers in 31 minutes.

I keep seeing references to all of that talent for the Hoosiers. I just don’t think the talent level is that high. Ballo is a good piece but not a superstar, Rice and Carlyle high ranking coming out of high school but they seem to me to be average talent until proven otherwise. They didn’t have great seasons last year, just solid contributors, Goode shooting ability could turn into one of the better contributions from the portal. I could be proven wrong but I think with Woody as the coach, the hype they’re receiving is overblown.
Buying time on the hot seat

No worry about rice I’ve continued to say he looked great. He can’t hit 3s but otherwise was clearly IUs best player.

Estrella didn’t play much but I thought he looked better than okpara and the announcers said he did not get to play as much as they would want him due to injury. His stats weren’t great last year but he looked very good in limited minutes. Okpara didn’t look any better than he did at OSU.

I know about Ziegler. Braden played 34 minutes, loyer 30, and TKR 28 for Purdue against creighton but they also played many other players with them to see how they did with them in the lineup. No one else had more than 19 minutes and 12 players had meaningful time including 5 players off the bench with 10+ minutes. It’s not just giving everyone minutes but changing up your lineup often to see how certain people play together especially at positions that you are trying to work through. You are also giving guys experience against a worthy opponent. Tennessee made substitutions early and often.

Geez, I thought Okpara looked live and really good! I liked him with OSU last year and with Barnes as his coach he oughta be even better.

And don't put too much stock in IU taking on UT as an early worthy opponent challenge. IU's non-con schedule has enough cupcakes to start a bakery.

Okpara played 31 minutes. Ballo played 32. I'm not really sure the argument you're even trying to make. Both coaches were going as if this were a middle season conference game.

Tennessee starters: Ziegler(37), Milicic(20), Gainey(29), Mashack(27), Okpara(31)

Indiana: Rice(31), Reneau(33), Carlyle(31), Ballo(32), Mgbako(31)

And again, Indiana was missing Galloway and Tucker who would have ate up some minutes as well. And I'm still not sure what point you're even failing miserably to make.

As for the blocked shots... There were 8. Goaltend don't count, fouls don't count. There were 8. Deflections? What does that even mean? That'd literally be a block. And they had 8 of those.
