OT: Caleb Swanigan - Draft Steal?

Draft steal? I just looked at his last game. 9 minutes and 0 for 4 and 0 assists and a turnover and 2 fouls. That's exactly the kind a stat line I pictured in his rookie year after watching him struggle against athletic teams last year. Reassures me that we're gonna be just fine this year. He can become the steal of the draft. Just not this year when he should still be playing in beautiful black & gold

Tell us more, box-score genius.

You may have looked at his last game stats but if you had followed Summer League and the rest of his games instead of just one you would understand why he is so popular with the Portland fan base not to mention with his teammates and coaches. Sometimes just a snap shot doesn't tell the whole story.

Summer League are fake games. Those don't count. The 9 minutes are just as telling as 0-4 for people who think he'll be relevant this year. He should still be here helping us win it all!

Caleb will likely have a very inconsistent year, so yes looking at one box score will not tell the story. The NBA is a whole different world physically and it'll take some adjusting. He's already been ejected from a game once getting into a shoving match - I don't really remember him getting 'aggressive' like that at all in college. He's not going to be a 'beast' physically in the NBA.

If you listened to his Coach's interview after that ejection he said that the other player had been physically manhandling Caleb all game and they told Caleb not to take it any more...that he was being tested. Said if it happened again the Blazers would expect Caleb to respond the same way....and not let himself get pushed around as a Rookie. Don't think they want him to fight but don't want him to take it either...As you say, NBA is much different than College ball.

I'm not saying anything in that situation was right or wrong, but as you pointed out - the reason it got to that point was because he was basically being pushed around by equal or bigger players. There often wasn't anyone who could physically challenge Caleb in college. Now he has it every single game. Much different.

Fair points, Ibodel....I'll add, it can rarely (if ever IMO) get to that stage in Big Ten? or NCAA play with the way the game is officiated.....just ask Isaac Haas.

Results aside, I'd encourage any player to go when they can get guaranteed first round money. Maybe he will develop into a great NBA player and get a huge second contract. Maybe he won't. Either way, he got his shot and is getting paid well for it. Good decision on his part.

Agreed....both Glenn Robinson and Caleb Swanigan made the right decisions in choosing to leave for the NBA, and both showcased their skills in their limited times at Purdue, IMO.

he's making 1.4M this year. tell me about all the times you turned that down.

According to his last box score he didn't even play & the team lost! I think for a guy with Caleb's potential a year of sitting on the bench being useless for a team that has no chance to win it all and permanently mess up his career stats is a lot more damaging than 1.4M

This take is completely clueless on so many levels. Lots of guys sit out lots of games including some established stars. By saying Biggie should have stayed another year you are showing your true colors of never caring about what was best for him.

A year where he can cash a paycheck and work full-time on his game instead of not getting paid and balancing being a college student while trying to improve. Again. Right decision.

If any of you guys knew about making the "right" decisions in life you'd be in the White House instead of drunk at noon posting on here. Caleb's decision mighta been the most financially sound short term, but it was the opposite of right. Didn't they make a new rule about limiting guys sitting out? I don't think they felt he needed a big rest after 9 minutes. I think he got minutes the 1st game bc it was a blowout.

Lmao yet another awful post. I would take zero pride in being associated with the current White House so I'm very pleased I didn't make the "right" decisions in life according to you.

"Right" isn't subjective. It's the path that gives you the best possible return in life & after life. Life is a lot more than money. Caleb didn't make the right decision. I didn't make the right decision with my ex. You move on and make the best of it.

Hilarious that you feel you know what’s “right” for someone else, especially after admitting you make mistakes.

Actually with the way you are describing it "right" is 100% subjective because what one person thinks isn't going to line up with another . Biggie and Rosie made the right decision in their eyes and it matters far more than what you think the right decision was. What you wanted and think was right doesn't matter at all and certainly not towards what Biggie can get out of this so called after life with this particular decision .

Pretty sure his goal was always to make it to the NBA. He did that. Stop arguing over what was the best decision. He did a lot of good for Purdue and continues to do so. Be happy for the guy. Everyone should cheer for him to have a great, long career.

The only thing more useless than riding pine for millions is playing college ball for nothing.

You're never going to get unbiased discussion about anything Purdue here. This home-board is mostly all cheerleaders who gang up on people they don't agree with. The national basketball board is definitely better.

What does bias have to do with this? The homer opinion would be for Biggie to stay at Purdue, but he made the choice that was best from his perspective.

Two ridiculous notions in this thread:

1) Using a box-score to argue he should have stayed at Purdue
2) Claiming that choices aren't subjective

Biggie has stated that his main goal has been to play in the NBA for a long time. He made the sacrifices needed to change his body and skill level in order to achieve that goal. To say he made the wrong choice when that is why he did such remarkable things in the first place, is just illogical.

Perhaps the main board would be a better place for that kind of mentality. It is like a kindergarten room wothout a teacher and with giant bowls of m&m’s on all of the tables.

This thread is ridiculous. Biggie wasn't going to improve his draft stock by coming back to Purdue. He would have put up similar numbers to what he did last year (huge numbers btw), but he wasn't passed on by 25 teams because his numbers weren't good enough. He was passed on by all those teams, because he is limited athletically. He is pretty much capped out in the athleticism department.

As for the actual topic of the thread, it's way too early to tell if a player is a draft steal or not. Biggie played well in summer league, but a lot of guys play well in summer league that don't necessarily have good years (Josh Selby/Kyle Andersen). I would imagine Biggie will average around 7-8 min/gm his rookie year.

No. Most people don't want to be in the White House. Someone who grows up wanting to be a scientist or engineer has no interest in such things. Very strange idea that all of these people made bad decisions rather than going into politics. It's just as strange to think that a guy who dreamed of playing in the NBA made a bad decision to go for it when the opportunity arose.

Please tell me what staying one more year in college gets him? He loses out on a million bucks and plays college level talent again for a year? You have no clue what you're talking about.
