OT - Biggest Concert Regret

Not an actual miss, but close: Billy Joel.

I have loved Billy Joel since I first heard Piano Man while riding with my dad. I have always wanted to see him live, but either the cost or the distance made it impossible. Given his age and the fact that he has slowed down his touring, I was resigned to the fact that it was never going to happen.

Until this year, when my most awesome wife heard (before I did) that Joel had added a concert date in Indianapolis in November and bought a pair of tickets. My top music bucket list item is 7 months away from being checked off.

Now...Billy Joel just has to be sure and stay alive for 7 more months!

YOU and Joel both have to stay alive.;) I love the fact that Joel actually has an antique motorcycle shop, but as for his music....I'll pass for the most part. Enjoy the concert and keep putting things in the bucket.

Moody Blues. And of course Vanilla Ice.

Actually Heller you might still be able to catch the Moody's. Edge, Hayward and Lodge are still touring some. They are doing some US shows in June and July.

My all time favorites btw.

Jethro Tull at Elliot in mid 70's, had tests the next day, they are one of my all time faves. Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust years. The other day I bought a DVD of Bowie done in Dublin from 2003, it's amazing.

Ditto for me, I missed that same Jethro Tull concert. Big regret since that one would have been so easy to attend.

One of mine too. I may but I've literally been to so many concerts that I'm pretty much done. I enjoy small venues like The Vogue etc. could care less if I ever see another Klipsch size venues ever again.

My biggest concert regret is one I DID attend - my third wife insisted we go see Kenny G - two hours of my life I'll never get back.
Mine was Aerosmith, 4th of July, 1977 (+/- 1 year). Too many crazy, rowdy people throwing M-80s, sparklers, and anything that would ignite. Hard to enjoy the music with a date in a sold-out arena under those conditions.

Elvis played in MSA in June of 77. I was 19 and didn't want to spend the evening watching middle age women throwing their panties all night. If they had billed it 'Elvis last concert' I'd have been there.

I can't believe nobody mentioned missing me at the PMO Christmas Show.

But seriously, one of my regrets was missing John Denver at Mackey Arena that was a time when Purdue was very strict about having concerts inside Mackey.

I just thought of another one: Grateful Dead at Soldier Field in '93.

Some friends went, I passed, and Jerry was gone a couple years later.

I'm going, haven't missed his shows the past 10 years. Saw him at Elliott Hall on his Damn the Torpedo's tour. About 7 years ago, I was in the lower pavilion at Klipsch for his show and saw one of my daughters old boyfriends. He waved for me to follow him so I did. Someone had approached him in the parking lot earlier and had given him front row seats. I got to see about 5 songs from the front row, dead center. As if that wasn't good enough, I turn around and the Irsay's were BEHIND me, a moment of redemption!

I regret missing that Petty show (Fall '79) as well. Torpedos had just been released after Petty'd filed bankruptcy, but I still thought he was an unknown. What a fool! Leading off for him was (IIRC) a real raw Johnny Cougar.

My first concert---I mean my VERY first concert was Little River Band the next year during a Reagan-Carter debate. The lead singer kept giving "updates"---"Score is nil-nil." Saw LRB again last summer at our County Fair, and I could have skipped that one!

You may laugh but I tried to get friends to the Elvis concert which turned out to be his last one. It was in Indy but all my friends just laughed.
Of anybody alive right now, I still want to see Bruce the most!

I saw Elvis in the summer of 70 in Phoenix. The place was not even close to full and we went to laugh at the women. But I must say his voice was amazing.

I know where you're coming from. Thought about seeing the Moody Blues at the Ryman since I've not seen them or the Ryman but just don't have the desire that I once did. I'd rather spend a day at the beach than fight the concert crowds anymore. Hopefully by fall I'll be full time with the beach in the backyard.

There is no better place to see a show than the Ryman.

I was at that show. Got tix through the student lottery. I remember Eddie V telling some stiffs in the front row "Don't sit down at a F**king Pearl Jam show!"

Yes, I was there too and recall this as well! And if Will Ferrell had been there he would've yelled, "THAT JUST HAPPENED!"

Looking at that list, now I feel bad about the many concerts I missed between 74-79! I did make it to Jefferson Starship in the cheap seats.

Not sure, but I believe Starship was in '80. I was at that one; Gracie Slick pointed a crooked finger at us when singing "Someone to Love". Still sounded strong.

I had my 5 minutes of fame at that concert. As fans we were throwing beach balls and frizbees around . Somehow I grabbed a frizbee and I threw it from the top balcony, and it made it all the way onto the stage with a thunderous applause

Was thinking about this today while I mowed: what musical act do you regret not seeing the most? This would be someone you could have seen, but didn't for whatever reason, and now you never will be able to, because they are gone.

Mine would be JJ Cale.
I ate too much Mexican prior and didn't get to truly enjoy that bitchin' Seals and Crofts/Dan Fogelberg show. Damn me.

I was a big fan of the band Earth, Wind, & Fire fan in the 70's and I never got to see them live. They are still touring so I still have a chance. I wish I could have seen them in their prime though. Thank goodness for YouTube where I can see a lot of their live performances. YouTube even has their joint tour with the band Chicago just a few years ago where they played each other's tunes as well as their own is a site to see if you are a fan of both groups.

I've seen them 3 times and they are phenomenal. The first time I was dragged to it and was completely blown away on every song and I knew almost everyone of them. If you've ever woken up to the music / lyrics below, its an interesting experience. Happened to me more than once as a kid.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people Look back and lament
Another day's useless Energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white

But we decide which is right
And which is an Illusion?

I saw the moody blues in Macon, GA, and the entire arena was literally smoking. then again, I also saw the Monkees reunion tour as well in Atlanta. But it included Wilson Pucket and the union gap and Paul Revere and the raiders. Chicago and the Doobie brothers are doing a combined concert I St louis this Summer. No, I'm not proud.

Isn't there like only one original Doobie Brother left with the band?

Kind f how I feel about Tull. Saw them seven times.

Well you can excommunicate me on my way to Sunday school
And have all the bishops harmonize these lines.

Back in 2001, I had a chance at VIP Backstage Passes through a family friend for ACDC's 'Stiffer Upper Lip' world tour. I had baseball as a junior in high school and refused to miss a day of practice. When I mentioned it to my coach, he said I was stupid not to go........still regret that to this day as AC/DC is one of my favorite bands of all time. Still haven't had a chance to see them live yet!

Sat 6th row in Elliot for Tull. Also saw Bowie in Indy during the Diamond Dogs tour around the same time.

The Boss on The River tour at ND, Nov '80. Was 15, had it all worked out with 2 of my sisters at ND. They had even sold my parents on me taking the South Shore to SB. Unfortunately, I tore ligaments in my ankle a week before in frosh hoops and couldn't attend. Took me almost 4 years more to see him at the Rosemont Horizon (Allstate Arena) in July '84 on Born in the USA.

Best surprise of a concert? Went to REM at IU Auditorium Nov '85. Was just getting on the REM train when the opening act was 10,000 Maniacs, with Natalie Merchant. Hadn't heard of them at all at that point. Wow!!! Blown away by both acts. Fan ever since.

I'm going to finally chime in with these thoughts. I don't necessarily have a particular regret but was/am disappointed that Thin Lizzy didn't tour the US following Jailbreak or Johnny the Fox in both 76 and 77 iirc. Phil Lynott had hepatitis the first time and Brian Robertson had cut his hand (in a bar fight) I think following Johnny. From time to time they had excellent Gary Moore stand in but evidently we weren't lucky enough to get that then around here. Still a bummer. I eventually got a concert DVD which was cool but needed to be about 3 times longer!
Is it too early to blast the garage stereo and have a beer? I think I'll cut the grass first.

Never too early to blast the stereo unless it's Opera or Death Metal. Then by all that is holy, mow!

one of my fave bands, Phil had trouble w/ Smack and thus had trouble getting a visa to perform in the US. Gary Moore was amazing too. If you want a great DVD , please get the Gary Moore tribute to Phil and Lizzy

Are you sure this was not at Elliot? I saw them both in '87. Merchant was dancing all over the stage like a barefoot farm girl celebrating the first cutting of grass in the Spring. Two years later I again saw REM, this time sans the Maniacs. All kinds of girls were rushing the stage, with no consequence. Michael Stipe took it all in stride, but he got a little too much mileage out of the then recent Exxon Mobil oil spill.

Rwenger, they may have toured together in '87 too (don't recall) but the REM/10,000 Maniacs show I mentioned was definitely Nov '85. Think it was IU homecoming wknd also. Lorenzo White went for over 300 yards the next day on a cold, rainy day.

Correct on Natalie Merchant. She was pure energy on stage.
