On the final play UC put the man AJ was guarding in the corner at the three-point line. When they drove in for the layup you could see Hammons trying to decide whether to leave his man and help on the drive or not. You know they were all told during the timeout not to let UC get a 3 pointer so if Hammons does help out then the penetrator could have kicked it out to Hammons' man for a wide open 3 to win the game. So UC deciding to space Hammons' guy in the corner at the 3-point line was a smart strategy that essentially pulled Hammons away from the basket and out of the play so he couldn't potentially block or alter the final shot. The UC coach said after the game the shot they got was the play they drew up.

So my question is, do you honestly think if there hadn't been a timeout called that Hammons' man would have still gone to the corner to pull Hammons away from the basket? My guess is he would have naturally gone down low in hopes of getting a tip-in on a miss.
