Now That The Portal Dust Has Settled...

Should Purdue add more players to the roster? Yes or No
I'm of the opinion, to let our walk-ons go on scholarship. HOWEVER, if someone like a Gillis, somehow had eligibility and was willing to be stashed on the roster in case of an injury or something, I would be open to taking them. It would have to be someone who knows they are a deep bench piece because I just don't see minutes for anyone else barring an injury.

purdue can still add 2 more players. the question should be , should purdue add 2 more players from the portal or give two of their previous walkons a scholarship?

our team is complete. is there anybody out there in the portal showing any interest in Purdue ? it appears Painter is already looking forward to 2026.

At this point, anyone added would be getting no money and no guarantee of playing time. So unless someone wants to come because they think in 26-27 they could compete for time, I can't see why anyone else would come.

Why no money? Agree on the rest.

I believe there is money, but Purdue is not going to just give out millions or offer much playing time. I’d welcome some 5th year senior much like Duke added Gillis or like that player who came to Purdue from Michigan. There may be somebody out there who doesn’t have much talent but has a great basketball mind and great basketball heart. Maybe a basketball version of Rudy.

Or maybe a player who sustained a major injury. Purdue offers him a scholarship knowing he won’t play in 2025 because of his injury

On the other hand, rather than being selfish, and wanting a 2026 player to reclassify. And arrive early, I prefer they remain in high school. I want Ertel to stay in high school and enjoy his senior year. Win a state championship! Become mr Basketball. Go to the prom. Enjoy life. There is more to life than college basketball.

I think that the roster is complete. If the right player reaches out, you talk to him, but I don’t see a need to be actively be pursuing additional players in the portal.

The more I read, painter has moved on to 2026.

As for the 2 empty spots, if someone contacts painter he may consider adding them. But more likely, painter will give a scholarship with very little nil to two of the current walkons playing with the team.

From an article about Mayer, there was mention of another Euro player that had received some interest / contact from Sasha.

I’m going to speculate that other player may have been given a little informal unofficial deal. And that deal may have been to remain in Europe and play in the European leagues for 2025. And then Purdue would offer him a deal for 2026. He could come to Purdue as a freshman in 2026 and play with Mayer.

Recruiting players in euro leagues and allowing players to play in euro leagues and make money and then arrive with 4 years of eligibility could be the new way of redshirting in the nil era. The player unofficially commits. Instead of giving them a scholarship and redshirting them, you Get them a spot on a euro team. The euro team pays them instead of receiving nil money. And then they arrive a year later with 4 years of full eligibility. Their euro league team Is kind of a farm team for Purdue Sort of like the old days of sending a player to a prep school like Maine central. I remember the days of Caron butler committed to Purdue but was stashed at Maine central. Unfortunately while there, he was stolen by UConn.

So after playing in Europe for what would be a redshirt year, the player comes to Purdue and plays 1-3 years and gets the exposure to nba scouts. It’s basically recruiting pros in foreign pro leagues to play for U.S. universities . Maybe Painter could recruit some Brazilian and Australian Olympic players to play for Purdue. You no longer need to be an amateur to play college sports. It’s a win win.

Not sure I would waste scholarships on walk-ons who are already here with jo scholarship. Unless they prove themselves to be more than a walk-on and get into the play rotation.

it's kind of clear anybody we add now is NOT going to get any realistic playing time next season. Last year we had 4 walk-ons that played a couple of minutes in a couple of games. they played very little in any game, but they did suit up and they participated in every practice. they each probably could have received a scholarship playing for a mid major team. But they chose to come and play for Purdue. and i have to believe they each had some talent for painter to allow them to be a walk-on to the team.

so... Compared to what athletes receive in NIL money today, a scholarship is kind of a drop in the bucket. my thoughts are if we have 15 spots/players on the team, each member should get something. if the player is from Indiana, giving them a 1 year scholarship isn't really that much money considering how much revenue the basketball team creates.

I'm curious what our 4 walk-ons are currently doing ? are they still practicing with the team ? and what will they do when the rule becomes official that each team will have only 15 players ? will walk-ons be allowed to practice with the team ? will teams even have walk-ons? or will all 15 players be under some type of NIL contract ?
