Not a good start for Edey

Ugly performance really. Fouled out in just 15 minutes. 5 pts, 5 rebounds. Missed 4 of 5 free throws. Was completely outplayed by Walker Kessler.
I would imagine Summer League and Preseason is not that far odd from high level Division 1.

NBA regular season is a huge jump. Memphis has obviously seen what they want on practice by starting him, but there will be a huge learning curve to start the season. Hopefully they ate patient with him.

This shouldn’t be unexpected. 82 games getting the rookie whistle. Opponents wanting to prove themselves over him. He and the team just need to be patient this season. At the same time, as long as he demonstrates improvement as the season goes on, with his work ethic, he should be fine.

He probably forgot he's not in the B1G anymore where physical play is steps 1-11 to stopping another big man.

I think he'll adjust

You gotta give him half a season to adjust. He was still very effective in the game. Great screens and he drew fouls too. I think his coach is willing to let him play through the learning curve. Grizzlies forwards were awful yesterday defensively.

What were his called fouls? Shot blocking? Switch onto guards? Body? Positioning? Offensive?
A few were he was out of position…he will need to adjust that way. The first foul, he was lucky defensive 3 seconds wasn’t called (or maybe unlucky) and he sagged too far over to his man. The ball handler came off a ball screen (tbh it was horrible defense by Ja and smart) and was practically untouched by the two Memphis defenders and drove to the lane. Edey slid over, but was a tad late, the ball handler passed to a cutting Kessler and edey tried to recover but fouled Kessler on the way up.

It will take some time adjusting , but we’ve all seen how he learns and adjusts.

And let’s also note how rough ALL of the rookies debuts were.

TSJ- DNP
Dillingham - DNP
Ware - 6 mins, 0-1, 1 Reb and 1 foul
Knecht - 16 mins, 2-4, 5 pts, 2 asts, 1 Reb, 1 stl and 1 foul
Sheppard - 16 min, 2-5, 4 pts, 3 TOs, 3 fouls
Clingan - 13 min, 1-2 for 2 pts, 1 foul, 2 reb, 1 still, 1 block and a foul
Castle - 18 min, 3-7, 5 asts, 3 Reb, 2 TO, 3 fouls
Sarr - 22 min, 1-7 with 2 pts, 5 Reb, 1 ast, 2 fouls

And none started like Zach. It will take time for ALL rookies to adjust.

One was a double foul where he tangled an arm with the other guy. Like he did lots of times in college.
From my perspective, ‘tangled an arm’ makes it sound mutual. The other guy completely pinned Zach’s arm and they called the foul because it had been getting a little chippy between the two and Zach is a rookie

Watched the whole game. Overall, he wasn't awful. He still has a lot to figure out and his teammates have a lot to figure out playing with him. I am probably the only IU fan that is an Edey fan. He'll also get some help when Jaren Jackson returns.
Yeah he will just have to figure out spacing in the defensive end. May take a bit but he’s shown he can learn quick and wants to learn, so I would assume he will be better either later on this year or it may take a whole season.
