As an Illinois fan, I was a big fan of Eastern's during his recruitment. His skills seemed like they would translate easily to the college game, and I think he would've fit seamlessly into Underwood's offense. I've caught a couple of your games, and it didn't seem like Painter used him very much. Why do you guys think he's struggled thus far under Painter?

Freshman adjusting to the college game. Next question.

to answer your question, Purdue has two very good senior guards who have started the past 3 years, and a sophomore guard that was part of the USA under 19 world team. Eastern is only a freshman and as the year progresses will see an increased share of playing time and will most likely start next year. .

Playing great so far ! Going to be a special player for Purdue. Playing time should see a huge spike next year as this team is loaded with senior talent.

While you speculate , do you think Illinois finishes .500 this year and gets a NIT invite?
We will be on the bubble if we have a good year. Baby steps.

I think Painter will adjust the offense next year to fit the team that will be there. Currently we have a team with bigs that require a bunch of attention. We also have great 3pt shooters. Next year we lose most of our shooting, so you will see a different offense. Nojel doesn't really fit the current offense, but I think he will fit in great when it's tweaked next season.

IMO PG is the hardest position to play as a freshman. I would like to see him play at the 3 as a freshman and run his man to death in transition, drive hard to the basket on half court O and use his quick hands as a threat on D.

It's smart of him to want to play 1 for the pros, but I think easing him in as a combo is a good strategy.

Post count doesn't cross boards. It's his first post on GBI, not Rivals.

To the question, Nojel has struggled a bit with the transition to college basketball. Where he used to have superior strength and athleticism, he is now on a fairly even plane with his opponents. Trying to pick up the point guard position is the hardest thing to do IMO. Given time, he'll be successful.

Also, he's not seeing much playing time because he's playing behind a guy who is the Purdue career leader in ATO and is shooting 57% from three. Hard to get minutes behind PJ.

Painter will not adjust his offense. Never did and perhaps never will.

that sounds reasonable, except mathias is one of our best and plays the 3. could he play a bit as a sub for vince against smaller teams? perhaps, but then again grady has been very efficient in his role, "pj like" where he doesnt make mistakes. if cline continues his struggles there is another opportunity.

I am actually an advocate for playing Vince more at the 3, which is another story and likewise, I would like to see Mathias more at the 2.

However, with those 2 at the 2 and 4 and Nojel at the 3 we can rebound better plus streak up and down the court in transition and again provide a different look - especially contrast with our twin tower look. Again these are change ups to our normal rotation. I am a believer in trying them and then adjusting to how a game is played.

The bonus is when PJ leaves, Nojel can step in more smoothly as the PG.

The opening point is true -- Eastern hasn’t been getting enough playing time, and the same goes for Taylor and Ewing, particularly against the weaker teams in the preconference schedule.

This team has four seniors and two underclassmen who all have played major minutes in past years, and they’ve all been in practices and games since the first of August. If they’re not already in top form from all the minutes they’ve been given, they never will be. Ranked foes aside, now’s the time to groom our newcomers for the Big Ten and beyond, or we’ll have poor depth, then more transfers, and next year will likely return us to the Big Ten’s bottom.

Taylor is just getting back into playing shape after taking some time off when his injury was being checked out. Eastern has been a foul and turnover machine. He'll continue to get time and will be fine. Ewing just isn't ready, probably from joining the team late this summer.
My guess is you were one of the idiots clamoring for Painter to sit all the starters not playing well after UT and WKU. By all means, let's sit the starters when they are struggling but we need to play the struggling bench guys because they need more experience.
In case you haven't heard, Painter is all about earning your court time in practice. If you don't practice well, there's no reason to expect more game experience is gonna make a dramatic difference......especially when you have shown nothing in the time you've had on the court.

How much trouble do you think Underwood will get in for buying players at OSU?

Hmm....against SIUE, Chicago State and Fairfield, Eastern had 21, 17 and 21 minutes. I'd say that's quite a bit.

Taylor is coming back from injury and given his history, I think it's prudent to bring him along slowly.

As for Ewing, I'm not sure what you've seen to make you think he's going to contribute this year. He would have had to take minutes from either Haas/Haarms at the 5 (don't think so) or Vince/Eifert at the 4. I could see the argument for getting minutes instead of Eifert but given that you and I see only limited minutes on the court and the coaches have seen these guys all camp and in practice, I'm going to defer to their judgment.

You are really, really struggling in one area. What do you think you need to work on to be a better human being?

Not sure it's possible. Jaycg15 may just have to be who he is, and little more. Sad really. What motivation does he have to attempt a provokation of someone he doesn't know from Adam.

Eastern can’t be yanked after each turnover if he’s going to develop enough to really help this year, let alone be the lone point next year. Why shouldn’t he get the major minutes in the blowouts? Does P.J. need all that work against bad teams after starting play in August?

Taylor’s lack of playing time results in trying to do too much too soon when he does get in. He needs more minutes just to get settled. Above all, this team needs a longer forward for rebounding and defense. Vince is a wing and gets wasted in there, just as he did as a freshman.

Ewing didn’t play until the last five minutes of the 69-point win -- hardly the kind of time one would expect for an athletic 6-8 junior forward who was “widely regarded to be among the top five junior college players in the nation.” If he can’t be used inside to relieve Vince or allow him to play on the wing where he belongs, why was he recruited? Who is responsible for his development? Does he benefit from sitting with Tommy Luce? At least switch him with Eifert.

To heck with practice players. Tennessee and Western Kentucky had better athletes than we did at key spots and knocked us out of the rankings. We need to use the preconference cupcakes to develop and involve the athletes we do have to compete in the Big Ten and the future.

Have you applied for any coaching positions?
