Nojel Eastern is key going forward....

Carsen getting the hype (deservedly so) along with the rest of the team. But Nojel's defense on Tony Carter was Kramer proud. Plus his physical ability to make some key rebounds. Nojel is becoming the nuts and bolts kinda player every talented championship team needs. Nothing against PJ but PJ's size hurts him when taller players can just shoot over him.

Also as others have stated.....he got in Carr's head a little, too....impressive for a freshman.....the Boilers will need his defense for stretches on the perimeter (and the glass) tomorrow with Abdur-Rahkman, Robinson & company.

I fully support this post.

I think PJ still starts, but if other team has a much bigger guard or one of these off the bounce type players, we need Nojel. It's been nice to see his growth this year. He is very comfortable out there now and his defense is really something special. His lateral movement and athleticism in general is very, very impressive. His passing and vision are very good too. Future stud.

With Vincent not having his full explosiveness, having Nojel’s combination of size and athleticism on the court helps negate the athletic disadvantages.

I love how he's forced himself into more minutes here at the end of the season. In the last 6 games, he's been at 16.2 MPG (13 min being the lowest). In the 6 games before that, he averaged 7.7 MPG (10 min being the most). It's been a lot of fun watching him step up and bring some needed energy & intensity.

Treed,

I know you are checking this thread out. Was it that cold in MSG that you needed a North Face coat and a hat? Just kidding. That was you sitting behing the bench correct? #20 kind of gives it away.

Why doesn't painter hive him more time? He deserves it.

Because of PJ. I would like to see more Nojel as well. Really, we were pretty lucky PSU didn't hit some more of those shots where they posted up their guards. Doesn't matter now for this game but it might next time. They had several good looks that Nojel wouldn't have given up.

I like pj but he isn't playing good enough to keep eastern on the bench It was eastern not pj making plays today

Was wondering that myself....after I crawled back to the TV during my mid-first half meltdown and proclaiming I would stop watching. In the midst of stripping down my two sons’ beds to deep clean their rooms (damn flu and cold viruses), I heard an explosion of cheers and it was Carsen’s deep three before the half. Figured me walking away did the trick and I had punished the team enough (tic).

I disagree. Carr vs PJ/Cline/Eiffert/even Mathias is often a mismatch. Eastern is built like he was designed by basketball Gods to be Carr's Terminator.

Guess you didn't watch the game when Rafferty praised the way PJ was guarding the much taller player for PSU. This run has been a team effort by four seniors since the day they arrived.

So 2 cents time.

Cent 1: when Carr pushed Nojel 3 or 4 times before he finally just hacked him. Nojel looked at Painter and assured him he was okay. Looked like he was just asserting himself.

Cent 2: when Carr picked up the foul for pushing off in the lane, there was this moment where he allows himself to get amped up. Loved it.

Cent 3: he can score 0 points as long as he is shutting down folks I could care less.

PS how big are Carsen’s balls? I mean does he need a wheelbarrow to cart them around NYC?

So were now back to questioning CMP?

I was not questioning Painter's coaching at all. The point is Nojel played great defense on Carr and made some athletic moves rebounding. This team needs athleticism. If it goes deep into the NCAA tournament Purdue is going to face some very good wings. PJ cannot handle these guys. Not his fault. He was busting his butt but PJ's size is an issue. I careless if PJ starts. My point is Nojel is playing better and needs to be in the game down the stretch for his defense and athleticism against certain matchups. Taller players can shoot over PJ. Painter sees this as Nojel has been in the games late more...

I understand why PJ plays. Nojel is a freshman. But with the talent on offense. Nojel can focus on guarding a team's best offensive wing.

I have no problem bringing in Eastern to give PJ a blow or to clamp down the defense....he has five fouls....use every one of them. I want PJ in when the game is on the line because of his intelligence and his experience. I question a freshman in the game at crunch time, and I darn sure don't want Nojel shooting any free throws in that situation. You can tell by looking at him when shooting one it's deep in his mind....like, "Man I sure wish someone else was doing this". He may have the worst form on the line since Shaq. Hopefully, shooting five hundred a day with a coach over the off-season will correct it.

PJ isn't getting enough credit IMO. He D'd Carr, got into him all night. I think he played a great game defensively

Sir your assessment is so way off base he ready for this stage and to make that quote like he scared or something you have no idea who my son is and what he is thinking. I can assure he can and would make the right decision if the game with the game on the line. His FT shooting I no needs work but besides that he can play. He’s a basketball player sir that has a great understanding of the game and is helping this team win.

Because, despite how good he is, he still makes some goofy mistakes, but fewer each game. But, he seems to have the potential to be a real difference maker next year and beyond.

He really, really, ticked off Tony Carr today. Then Chambers was screaming at the ref, "He's all over him". It was perfect. He has figured out how to get playing time on this team. He'll probably play 38 minutes a game next year. If he can improve his jumper, he can be an offensive monster someday too.

We need everybody at this point. Nobody is capable of being on top of their game for the full 40 minutes. The rotation is keeping fresh guys on the floor. Tomorrow we'll need it.

Didn't see it mentioned here but he also jump started our offense today when it shut down in the first half. Two really good passes that got us great looks at three pointers. I think one was a pass back to Dakota as he was driving the lane which was a miss but a look you will take every single time you can get it and the second was a cross court pass to Carsen I believe that he made. Really thought that sequence got our offense moving again after we had let an 18-13 advantage turn into a 28-21 deficit.

What mistakes you speak of he made plz point it out nobody perfect but I don’t recalll and I’m at every game. Making goofy mistakes you refenced about t/o are way way down so plz share with me the goofy mistakes you sir speak of. It’s like some of you on this board clearly has a vendetta against my son when he is playing well. He is a difference maker this year right now that is helping this team win games right now. He’ll with next year it’s all about him being a difference maker now in big ten championship game today and helping this senior group end their collegiate career with a national championship this year. You gonna reference incentive remarks like that plz show facts sir bcuz whatever goofy mistakes you seem to think he is making in games I haven’t seen many.

My 2 cents:
I have watched this kid grow over the season. Yes, his FT look rushed and a bit jerky, but the kid is going to be a star here. There is no way a kid with that much potential does not eventually become a great FT shooter. He's too athletic and talented. I also think Painter has done a perfect job of allowing him to grow into more minutes. It looks to me that he is going to get as many minutes as he wants by learning and growing. He is not the same kid we saw at the start of the season. We need to enjoy this Sr Class while they are here. Next year will be a drop off, and then another gradual climb from there as the incoming talent grows with CE, NE and MH leading the way. I expect Nojel's minutes to continue to increase the rest of the season as well. For a deep run in the NCAA, we have to have the bench contribute.

I think Nojel is making a huge positive impact on our team this year. His ball handling was stellar against PSU's trapping defense. I am excited thinking about him and Carsen as our guards next year!

Ms Reed, Don't get riled. Most here are 100% in the sphere with you. There will always be some comments that seem to dig or nitpick. I think you have done a good job of resisting them lately and if I was in the same place you are, I would give the glare also. Now let's team-take those Wolverines down today.
