Next Year WR's...

Just reading the article on G&B about the bowl practices and such. Brohm said that he couldn't wait to start working with the younger guys and start to develop some of them for next year.
First thing I thought of when I read this was the WR group. What will that group look like next year?
My other question is what will become of Jackson Anthrop??? I thought he would have a good year this year. Once Moore started getting a lot of attention, I thought they would get Anthrop on the field at the same time (which happened occasionally) and Moore would really open things up. Didn't happen. Does he stay lost in the mix? Do they find another spot for him?

With who we have coming in Danny might get less time. Some of the guys who redshirted like Amad Anderson and Kory Taylor have some real promise too I think, though that is based on them as recruits, as I have no idea how they did in practice this year.

Looking at the receivers we have, the receivers who redshirted, and the receiver recruits coming in, I have to believe Jackson is left behind. I have to believe several other receivers like Sparks are left behind as well. One of the other problems facing both is the amount of quality DBs coming in next year. there are just so many positions a WR can try to convert to. he could go from being 8th on the WR depth chart to being 10th on the Db depth chart.

Looking at all the potential receivers for next year, something has got to give, and somebody is going to be left out and somebody else will transfer, or decommit.

My guess is Jackson won't play a ton the rest of his career due to the upgrade in talent we have coming in.

Brohm values playmakers and YAC, having the ability to score from anywhere on the field. Jackson is a possession slot guy. His longest play in 2 years and 55 receptions is a 35 yard gain. Rondale is ahead of him for good, and he might also get passed up by better athletes like Anderson and Sheffield in the future. His biggest contributions will likely be on ST.

Likewise, Sparks is a possession guy on the outside. His longest play in 2 years and 47 receptions is 34 yards.

Not to say there won't be situations where you want these guys out there due to their experience, but it will be situational and they'll need to be head and shoulders more reliable than the others with their hands and route running for Brohm to sacrifice the big play potential.

Both Anthrop and Sparks seem like great guys that represent Purdue incredibly well. It's the tough part of bringing in higher level talent - some guys are bound to get leaped over in the depth chart.

Have to think David Bell, Milton Wright, Kory Taylor, Mershawn Rice, and other i'm forgetting will compete for playing time outside next year.

Rondale is a given in the slot, TJ Sheffield will be another guy that would/could steal time from Jackson next year.

It's not a bad problem to have, but you hate to see it come at the expense of some quality people.

As others have said, the talent level is so high that Jackson, unfortunately for him, will be surpassed.

When you get higher talented players, this is just part of it. We are going to see this on the other side of the ball too with defense.

My question with Rice being listed as an athlete is where he ends up. I don't think it is a given that he ends up at WR or are telling him that he gets first chance at WR?

With our unproven depth at running back, I wonder if moving to RB for Anthrop might be an option. If I remember correctly, he was a good running back in high school.

That would be an awful option. He's way too slow/small to be a good running back

That's life. It's gonna happen in athletics as well as when these guys are in the working world. There's no shame in not being good enough. If Anthrop were at a MAC program or similar, he'd be getting a lot more PT. It is what it is.

NO WAY. Anthrop is about 180 on a good day. Not only would he get killed at RB, but he wouldn't help the running game at all. There's a HUGE difference between what a guy does in high school and what he can do in the B10.

Over the last 10-12 yrs , Jaycean Taylor was one of our better running backs at 5'10 180LBS. Anthrop is listed as 5'11 185LBS. Both had 4.5 speed. Anthrop is probably our best blocking receiver and could be an asset out of backfield in passing game. Even if he just contributes the rest of his career on special teams, I'm glad he's a Boilermker

I’m excited about Sheffield. I expect him to RS next season, and then have an extremely productive career at Purdue.

I will guarantee that Danny gets no receptions next year [he will see the field, from about 20 rows up].

He's an outstanding young man, along with the rest of the Antrops, who are true Boilermakers! I, too, am glad that he's a Boilermaker!

I understand the comments of playing time, but saying off the team 20 rows up will only happen if Danny chooses to leave. I don't see a playmaker that is healthy ever watching games from the stands knowing they have experience and could be a play away from being on the field in the next man up concept.

Danny Anthrop graduated 3 years ago. FFS

Like everyone here, I think Jackson will have to prove his worth on special teams in order to see much action. He is solid depth to have in certain situations though.

The NCAA might have something to say about Danny's eligibility

Maurice Clarett was 190 with 4.7 x 40 speed.

I agree that Rice will see field in 2019 but I am hoping its at nickel or corner. Purdue was 123 of 129 teams in pass defense and 103 of 129 in total defense this year and worst in B1G in 3rd down efficiency (defense). We will be loaded at WR next fall. Too many walkons were playing this yr in backfield. We desperately need stud athletes on "D"

Wikipedia lists him at 220. Not sure when that means but I doubt they care about his weight now at age 35. Maybe from the last time he suited up.

190 seems low for his time at O$U.

I found a 210 weight when he played for the Night Hawks....who knows though.

I think this is why Brohm and his staff are eager to see what guys like Taylor, Anderson, Hamilton, and Bonner can do with more focus on them after typically having them on the scout team. I think you could very well see Taylor and Bonner getting snaps on the outside being bigger WR's (especially in blocking situations) and getting Anderson and Hamilton some time in the slot opposite of Moore or in place of Moore when he needs a breather. There will be a plethora of talent to choose from in the fall camp next season:

Rondale Moore
Jared Sparks
Jackson Anthrop
Keyron Catlett
Benaiah Franklin
Tyler Hamilton
Amad Anderson
Kory Taylor

Milton Wright
TJ Sheffield
David Bell (possible)

That's a lot of talent to throw to and a lot of ability to scheme to...not to forget the godo stable of TE's in Darius Pittman, Hopkins, Durham with the two freshman coming in as well (less confident with Miller making it with the recent TCU offer).

Boilermakers should be salivating over these receivers. I could never understand, during the Tiller era, why we couldn't attract big-name receivers! Bless their hearts, we've loved our receivers (too many to name), but except for an occasional 4 star, they were mostly 2 and 3 star recruits.

Sorry, just trying to be coy with my response.

And the 4 star receivers we did get turned into busts. AT Simpson, Selwyn Lymon, OJ Ross. Competition should push the current crop to be much better.

Yea let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Currently, the only one that has panned out is Moore. The rest we’ll have to wait and see. I think we have to be realistic tho and accept that 2-3 of them may be busts

We can afford for 2-3 of them to be busts and still have the strongest stable of WR we’ve had in as long as most of us can remember.
