NET is out

First NET rankings are out.. currently have Purdue at 21st and 6th in the Big Ten. Looks like we have some work to do.

Eh, we have played some close games and the computer likes it when you blow teams out. Example, Purdue’s son, Tennessee, hasn’t really played anyone—they beat an overrated Baylor team and did beat a good Louisville team. But the rest are cupcakes and they are #1. Lots of ball left to play and not too worried about our NET.

If I were those guys down south though…at 71….id be a bit worried

The NET isn’t really a ranking system per se. it’s used more to determine quads for games played.
Having said that, I think our number will rise as we play the next two weeks and into conference season.

Where WE are in the NET is far less important to where our opponents are. It's a sorting tool to help with SOS for the committee. Yeah, the best teams will logically end up near the top of the list, but the important thing is to look at our record against each Quad. The more Q1 games and wins we end up with, the better.

Taking a look at our schedule so far, going from best to worst NET-wise:

1. Marquette - 7 - Since this is a road game, I can't see it possibly dropping out of Quad 1 (Top 75).
2. Alabama - 13 - Has to stay top 30 to stay a Quad 1 win since it was at home. Probably will considering their schedule strength the way it is and will be.
3. Ole Miss - 55 - Quad 2 win right now, but good chance to become Quad 1 as that cutoff is 50 for neutral games.
4. NC State - 91 - on the other end of the Quad 2 range. Higher than 100 would make it Quad 3. I would expect it to get better, not worse.
5. Yale - 106 - Kinda cemented in Quad 3. Would need to get to 75 to move up.
6. Texas A&M CC - 140 - This game could drop to Quad 4. They don't have a strong conference that could help their metrics.
7. Marshall - 192 - Needs to move to 160 to become Quad 3. Unlikely.
8. Northern Kentucky - 286 - Locked into Quad 4.

And the rest of our Non-conference:
1. Auburn - 2 - Win or lose, this will be Quad 1. Neutral or road shouldn't make a difference. Currently neutral, but see below about A&M.
2. Texas A&M - 43 - Labeled right now as Neutral, but the NCAA can make adjustments during the season on these things. David Worlock from the NCAA put out a post on X about it this morning, but I didn't get a chance to read it. Could make a difference because as neutral, it's Quad 1, but as a home game it's Quad 2, currently.
3. Toledo - 197 - Pretty solid in the Quad 4 range, but the MAC is usually decent, so possible room to move if they're good. Currently 5-3, and will likely finish NC at 6-5.

Thanks for the solid research and info, CB!

The smart ones down south aren't worried ... they can see what kind of team they have. Same as the last 3 years with the same coach. The only difference this year and it will be Woodson's downfall, he doesn't have that NBA first rounder that can carry a team. IMO they are mid range at best in the B1G and nothing more than a bubble team in March that will fail to make March Madness with a $6M roster. I'm an IU grad, lifelong fan and I don't even care what they do anymore. I was done with Woodson midway through his 2nd year.

Hate to hear it.

IU fans are worried. They are just too distraught over the signs this early in the season to admit it. This was the year, the players, that would bring IU back to its rightful spot on top of the B1G.

I would venture to say they are more pissed than worried. Pissed that Woodson is not making changes as promised. That is those that favor Woodson as coach. Those that want him gone ... saw it wasn't going to work as soon as he made last years speech on Senior Day.

The decision to schedule a bunch of cupcakes will really make it tough for you guys to go dancing. At this point, you probably need to go 13-7 in the B1G to get a bid. You will likely have zero Q1 or Q2 wins in the non-conference and the committee has not been forgiving of late to teams with that resume.

Wow, just looked and you only play Oregon, UCLA, Wisconsin, Michigan, MSU and Illinois once. Man, that's about as cake a B1G schedule as can be. Purdue and OSU are the only top tier teams you play twice if I'm reading that right. You might need to go 14-6 in the B1G to feel comfortably in.

Hold on, they play Houston tomorrow.
That ought to help.....,......

Ohhhhhh wait....that's ...... Sam Houston.
Nevermind LOL

I agree. Is the B1G intern making these schedules or is it computerized? I am so out of touch I had to look up how many wins we have right now, 5 ... so ... I don't even think they make it in with 19 wins before the B1G tourney BECAUSE of their weakass non conference schedule and the Q1 and Q2 results.

Those teams IU plays one time, Oregon, Wisconsin, MSU are on the road, sure L's ... I hate scUM but I love Dusty May and have watched his games this year ... they will come close to winning in AH and UCLA and Illinois are just tough basketball teams where coaching will always win a close game. They could lose all 6 of those games.

By the end of the season you will see an orange glow in the sky from the south, due to Bloomington being on fire due to Woodson.

Well to be fair you only play 3 teams twice now.

That was my question to my best friend since being roommates at IU in the 70's ... "guess who those idiots are playing on Tuesday, you'll never guess" .... and he didn't. 😂 When I explained it to him and who they were (noted for football) ... he was dazed.

We will have a common opponent though that even has an IU tie .... Steve Alford's Nevada team opened their season playing Sam Houston State. I remember seeing SHS play Boise State in DII football on the blue field (headache) in the early 1990s.

Isn't that ridiculous? How can there be a true conference seasonal champion doing that. I have been a sports junkie my whole life but it sure is getting harder to watch what is taking place in college athletics.

It is not ideal. We will frequently have B1G champs who are clearly inferior to another team or two because they were gifted a much easier schedule.

I guess the B1G tournament will sort them out. I wonder how many fans know that not all 18 teams will be invited?

I did not know.
You mean someone finally said enough with trash iu.....they are not invited?

They beat Louisville by 22 and Baylor by 15. Every other win is by 16, 35, 35, 20 and 43. NET loves the margin of victory. Purdue gets hurt by losing to Marquette by 18 and only beating Yale by 8.

How is USC so bad? I thought Musselman was going to be the guy to make them a decent program….perhaps in another year? I feel like they scooped up some good players in the portal.

I do like the NET discourse - not a direct metric but indirect used by the committee.

Can’t believe they scored 36 points the other night.

Of course it's early, but our numbers have already improved, mostly thanks to Ole Miss blowing out Louisville at Pitino's brothel last night. Ole Miss moved all the way up to 27, easily in Quad 1.

Edit to add: NC State went the other way, dropping to Quad 3 without playing. They play Texas tonight in the SEC/ACC thing.

Indiana got some help as well. Providence moved to a Q2 win. South Carolina is now just 10 spots from being Q2. Providence moved from 104 to 81. South Carolina moved from 135 to 90 after last night. Which Louisville did move down. Indiana win big. And because if all that... Indiana moved to 4 spots lol.

If Purdue wins the Big 10, they won’t have to worry about what their NET rating was in December. If Purdue doesn’t win the Big 10 they will have other things to worry about than their NET rating.
