Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. I was hoping Swanson would start the 3rd quarter after having a great 2nd quarter, but we went back to the starting lineup and promptly fell behind never to recover the lead. Frustrating to say the least. Several times throughout the game we had chances to tie or take the lead only to turn the ball over for a score. Our last turn over came with Purdue down 3 with a change to tie with a 3 but s bad pass and all of a sudden we’re down 6 with just seconds to go. The turnovers are painful to watch. This was a winnable game.74-68 final. NU wins, but we scored well, defended well, just way too many turnovers to win. Still this game stands FAR above our best effort this season.
Poole did not play, Petree did not play, Amiyah only played a little and Bass was used sparingly it seemed. McCarthy and Puryear had a rough night, but not surprising going up against Markowski.
Jones led Purdue with 20, Layden with 12 and Swanson and Lombard tied for third high at 11. It feels like its been some time since we had 4 players in double figures scoring against a quality opponent.
We out-rebounded NU by 1, held Markowski to 2 boards (she had 21 her last visit to Mackey), and shot a better percentage from the field and from behind the arc. But you are not going to win against a quality team turning it over 21 times.Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? She had a pained expression and was stretching every which way on the bench.Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. Mike Carmin’s article from Greater Lafayette Sports Report mentions Swanson struggling with leg cramps as you suggested. Some interesting quotes in here as well. Also looks like Poole is out for the season.Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? She had a pained expression and was stretching every which way on the bench.
Good effort but the turnovers killed them. I was encouraged that the whole team and the head coach seemed to have some fight tonight. I don't think this team understands what it means to play hard.
I would love for McKenna Layden to get to play on the wing more instead of being forced to play the 4 most of the time.
Sophie Swanson seemed more engaged tonight. She actually took some good shots instead of forcing up impossible shots.
Markowski is what I hope Lana McCarthy becomes in a year or two. She has almost as many post moves as Kevin McHale. Lol.
I still think it's past time to play mainly Freshmen and Sophomores with a little Lombard and Bass sprinkled in. I don't see the value in playing Collier so much. If she scored once in a while I could see her playing but she doesn't contribute much production wise.
I would love to see Amiyah Reynolds to kick up her aggression level about 100 points. You can see she has some talent but she's so timid.
I noticed during the timeout huddles that it looks like Mila Reynolds has lost some weight. She looked kind of slim and trim standing there. Hopefully she has finally decided to get serious and live up to her potential.
I hope I'm wrong. I have this bad feeling that we are going to be decimated by transfers after the season. Coach Gearlds has to find a way to keep her youngsters this off season. If she can keep her Freshmen and Sophomores.....add in the 3 signees.....and maybe get ONE or TWO TOP transfers....this can be turned around faster than some think. Can't afford to have several transfer out and have to start over again or import an entire team from the portal. Especially with Purdue's NIL budget.
My preferred starting lineup the rest of the way.
5 - Lana McCarthy
4 - Kendall Puryear
3 - McKenna Layden
2 - Sophie Swanson/Amiyah Reynolds
1 - Rashunda Jones
I also hope you are wrong because if we continue to lose our best young talent to the portal we will be finished. What top talent is going to choose a losing program to play for, especially one with little to zero nil money. We’d continue to bring transfers from mid majors that are at best complementary or practice players. Coach needs to show our underclassmen that she’s counting on them to be the players that will bring Purdue back to respectability. In order to do that they need to play. I know she also needs to win games but we are not doing that. If I am going to have a losing season I will have it playing and developing my underclassmen. That seems like the best strategy right at this point.Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? Which is what I said top prtal players would say to Purdue, “no thanks.” Unless Purdue had a lot of nil money to entice them, which is not happening… Therefore I must conclude they don’t have it or they are not offering it.Where is the data to show where the women's team ranks with NIL money? I see that thrown out time and time again as a reason we struggle to pull in talent, but I'm not sure where we actually rank against other programs. I didn't think our men's team had boatloads of money either, but they seem to be doing just fine currently. Again, there are 140 teams ahead of us now on the NET and I would bet they're not all loaded with NIL either. Feels like an easy excuse. Some correlation, sure, but let's be honest.
As a recruit, the first thing I'm going to see is that we are last in the Big 10, getting blown out almost every game, and say, no thanks!
Totally speculation on my part, I'm guessing that not less than two players who are getting significant playing time and also have eligibility will be moving on Not necessarily due to NIL opportunities, but just looking for a different environment.I also hope you are wrong because if we continue to lose our best young talent to the portal we will be finished. Will Poole be able to get a medical redshirt since she only played in 8 games?
Obviously most programs don’t hand out buckets full of nil money to women bb players. The sport is revenue neutral at best. So none but the very best players in the country are getting any kind of significant nil money. That would be a way to attract different making players to Purdue which is the same as saying that will never happen. And until Purdue proves it can be competitive we are not likely to see the next White, Figgs, Douglas trio in west Lafayette. So developing the young talent we have now and the ones coming is our best bet.Totally speculation on my part, I'm guessing that not less than two players who are getting significant playing time and also have eligibility will be moving on Not necessarily due to NIL opportunities, but just looking for a different environment.
Yep, that should be the lineup, Collier is a nice story, no need for her to be starting and playing 25 minutes a game though.Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? She had a pained expression and was stretching every which way on the bench.

My guess is Purdue maybe loses a player or two, not sure anyone is going to be in high demand or offer the girls more of a opportunity to play than Purdue does unless they move down a level.Welcome back laughing boy. I noticed once you realized I was right about going zero for January you kind of disappeared.
This high school offense we run will almost always have high turnovers against good teams, especially without an exceptional and talented point guard. There were fans rushing Terry out the door last season, but I am betting those same fans wish we had her this year. The other constant in the Versyp/Gearlds offense is poor rebounding, so getting one more than Nebraska is actually a pretty big accomplishment from my point of view.
I agree about Markowski resembling McHale in her play. I have no faith that if CKG stays McCarthy will come anywhere close to that, because we have yet to see any real improvement year over year from any player under CKG. Jones is starting to show signs, but she did last year too then had a bunch of bad games.
Good to hear about Mila bing thinner, if she drops about 30 pounds she could be a lot more effective on both ends, because last season she was loafing on D after a couple of minutes because she was gassed already. Until Amiyah shows that aggression we both want to see, she needs to be at the end of the bench until garbage time. She and Collier are non-players in the ofensive scheme and the rst of our players are not nearly good enough to play 3 on 5 on offense.
I too would like to see more of Layden at the 3, but we have lots of guards and wings and only a couple posts. If she plays SF you will have to play Bass 30 minutes backing up McCarthy and Puryear, maybe more on nights they get into foul trouble. Also of the portal kids, Lombard has earned her time on the floor. Laydn can guard PFs and plays on the offensive end like a SF anyway, and it helps with our rebounding to have her defending 4s as she is our best player at boxing out and fighting for boards.
IF I were coach my starters would be:
McCarthy backed by Puryear, splitting time by who is hot that night
Layden backed by Bass. McKenna getting 30-32 minutes a night if she could handle that load.
Swanson
Lombard
Jones
With Collier and Amiyah backing up the perimeter players as little as we could get away with. I wish Smith were still playing.
I cannot even remember the last time we did not lose transfers, its endemic for the last 20 years, in large part driven by our poor results and at least one coach that was abrasive to the point of nearly being abusive. The other part of why kids leave is they can see we are running simplistic mickey mouse offense and are looking for a school that will utilize their talents and grow them, and that is not Purdue under our current staff. I am with you, 2-4 of the underclassmen are like leaving at the end of the year.
I don't even think Collier is a nice story, she is an example of why D1 teams in Power 4 conferences should not be shopping NAIA teams for players OR COACHES!!!Yep, that should be the lineup, Collier is a nice story, no need for her to be starting and playing 25 minutes a game though.
