Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. I was hoping Swanson would start the 3rd quarter after having a great 2nd quarter, but we went back to the starting lineup and promptly fell behind never to recover the lead. Frustrating to say the least. Several times throughout the game we had chances to tie or take the lead only to turn the ball over for a score. Our last turn over came with Purdue down 3 with a change to tie with a 3 but s bad pass and all of a sudden we’re down 6 with just seconds to go. The turnovers are painful to watch. This was a winnable game.74-68 final. NU wins, but we scored well, defended well, just way too many turnovers to win. Still this game stands FAR above our best effort this season.
Poole did not play, Petree did not play, Amiyah only played a little and Bass was used sparingly it seemed. McCarthy and Puryear had a rough night, but not surprising going up against Markowski.
Jones led Purdue with 20, Layden with 12 and Swanson and Lombard tied for third high at 11. It feels like its been some time since we had 4 players in double figures scoring against a quality opponent.
We out-rebounded NU by 1, held Markowski to 2 boards (she had 21 her last visit to Mackey), and shot a better percentage from the field and from behind the arc. But you are not going to win against a quality team turning it over 21 times.Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? She had a pained expression and was stretching every which way on the bench.Disappointing to be outscored by 24 off turnovers and still lose by only 6. Mike Carmin’s article from Greater Lafayette Sports Report mentions Swanson struggling with leg cramps as you suggested. Some interesting quotes in here as well. Also looks like Poole is out for the season.Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe? She had a pained expression and was stretching every which way on the bench.
Good effort but the turnovers killed them. I was encouraged that the whole team and the head coach seemed to have some fight tonight. I don't think this team understands what it means to play hard.
I would love for McKenna Layden to get to play on the wing more instead of being forced to play the 4 most of the time.
Sophie Swanson seemed more engaged tonight. She actually took some good shots instead of forcing up impossible shots.
Markowski is what I hope Lana McCarthy becomes in a year or two. She has almost as many post moves as Kevin McHale. Lol.
I still think it's past time to play mainly Freshmen and Sophomores with a little Lombard and Bass sprinkled in. I don't see the value in playing Collier so much. If she scored once in a while I could see her playing but she doesn't contribute much production wise.
I would love to see Amiyah Reynolds to kick up her aggression level about 100 points. You can see she has some talent but she's so timid.
I noticed during the timeout huddles that it looks like Mila Reynolds has lost some weight. She looked kind of slim and trim standing there. Hopefully she has finally decided to get serious and live up to her potential.
I hope I'm wrong. I have this bad feeling that we are going to be decimated by transfers after the season. Coach Gearlds has to find a way to keep her youngsters this off season. If she can keep her Freshmen and Sophomores.....add in the 3 signees.....and maybe get ONE or TWO TOP transfers....this can be turned around faster than some think. Can't afford to have several transfer out and have to start over again or import an entire team from the portal. Especially with Purdue's NIL budget.
My preferred starting lineup the rest of the way.
5 - Lana McCarthy
4 - Kendall Puryear
3 - McKenna Layden
2 - Sophie Swanson/Amiyah Reynolds
1 - Rashunda Jones
I also hope you are wrong because if we continue to lose our best young talent to the portal we will be finished. What top talent is going to choose a losing program to play for, especially one with little to zero nil money. We’d continue to bring transfers from mid majors that are at best complementary or practice players. Coach needs to show our underclassmen that she’s counting on them to be the players that will bring Purdue back to respectability. In order to do that they need to play. I know she also needs to win games but we are not doing that. If I am going to have a losing season I will have it playing and developing my underclassmen. That seems like the best strategy right at this point.Swanson was battling some kind of leg issue in the second half. Cramps maybe?
