Minnesota looking for a new football coach (link)

Would make some sense on why Fleck let all the other jobs pass him by. Maybe he knew this was going to be there after his bowl game.

I don't think that's the case, he might very well ended up at MN, but he wanted Oregon. Oregon passed on him not the other way around.
I read somewhere that he think MN is a better job than us, which is true in most regards, but I don't see MN offering him more than around $2.5M. Not wanting a major rebuilt might be what he is looking for.

I don't think he passed on Oregon. Didn't mean to imply that. But he obviously passed on whatever opportunities he had beyond that. And that would make more sense to me maybe if he knew this was waiting for him.

I think Minnesota is a perfect fit for PJ Fleck's style it would be a good place for him to coach

When the now ex-coach made the statement that he was behind the players 100% regarding the their boycott, I felt he was a dead man walking from then on!

An old wise man, my father, told me as I entered the workforce, "If you are going to take a swipe at the King, you better kill him or you will be gone"!

He chose to back his players and not his bosses so he is gone.

Rumor has it that UMN has Fleck already signed/sealed as of yesterday. Claeys dismisal was contingent on reaching agreement with Fleck. New MN AD was stuck with Claeys when hired last year but was looking for an excuse to unload him.

I can agree with this. Fleck wanted to leave WMU and after losing to UW, he still wanted to leave. With no other offers, if I'm him, I jump at the opportunity to go to Minn. and if I'm Minn, after the coach backed the players, I knew he was gone. And I can see Minn waiting until reaching an agreement with fleck before firing their coach. That would look stupid firing the coach with no replacement in sight. Maybe Purdue could flip some WMU and minn recruits, but neither school had many elite athletes to try to steal.

How do you know he had any opportunities?
Yeah, everything I read, no one other than Cincinnati even tried to contact him or his agent and that would've been G5 to G5 move, maybe a slight step up, but not enough to move.. His name was brought up by fans and media, but never seemed to actually be really rumored on any ones short list.

Do you guys think Minny is a better job than Purdue? They currently have much less of a rebuild job but I still think we're a better program over the long haul. They can have Fleck. I'm happy with Brohm and like his style. Fleck's a flake and I'm growing tired of the row the boat horseshit. I like our future better than Minny's. Am I alone with that thinking?

Slight edge to them because of their new stadium. I actually think both programs got the right coach for their program if Fleck goes there. I think Purdue for the guy they needed to revive their identity in Brohm. Fleck seems like a better fit at Minnesota.

This was a shocker. MN is the 2nd best program in the B1G West behind only WI right now IMHO. I thought IA and NE went backwards this year. It'll be interesting to see if Fleck can get them to the level of challenging WI.

I think recruiting to Minny would be much harder. People use winter in Indiana as a negative. Winter in Indiana would be fall or spring in Minny.

Minny might be better right now but overall Iowa and Neb are much much better programs. Gophers look to be in turmoil too. Did you see Leidner's quote? I know he's just a young 20 something but those were strong words about their current situation. We need to be better than Illinois, Minnesota and Northwestern every year. Compete with the other three in the West and all will be well. I truly think that's attainable.

They recruit successfully in FL & GA just like we do and go after many of the same guys. Their roster is full of southern recruits. I lived in Minneapolis for 10 yrs in 90's. Its a great cosmopolitan area with pro hockey, baseball, nba and nfl-summers are 70's-80's and mild (except it only lasts for 6 weeks) low crime and a really nice on campus stadium , basketball fieldhouse and hockey arena that seats 12,000 and sells out. W Laf Village does not compare to on campus nite spots, restaurants, bars just a block from TCF or The Barn. I miss it........

The Riley hire to replace Pelini at NE has not worked and I think the jury is still out on IA. As long as Fitz is at NW they're gonna be tough. I did not see the Leidner quote though.

I mentioned Minny last week in a thread as a great place for Fleck to wind up. The Chipster is also available, although I think he winds up at UCLA.. As far as WMU recruits, I like that Chambers kid they signed the other day out of Ohio and Umlor looks like a good TE prospect.

I could see Brohm going after Minny's Abojei and definitely Creamer since we didn't get White and Brohm knows of him.

True but the Twin Cities offer more than enough to compensate. Nobody in IN can compare on that point.

Yeah, the twin cities offer a lot. It's not even comparable. However, there's something to say for a true college town atmosphere vs a bustling metroplex. It's all in how you sell it. But it does get coooooooooooooold.

The Twin Cities area is as metropolitan as any in the US. Spring, summer, and fall are incredibly beautiful and pleasant, and the University provides a great education. As you said, West Laffy Village, nor Lafayette itself can come close.

I couldn't agree more. It's beyond corny. He cares more about slogans than anything. His game jacket says GROW on it. The plays helmets say "ROW" on them and have oars on the top of them. WTF - how about Bronco's? When the players come off the field, he is crouched down rowing. He goes around the hotel and gives his players a kiss goodnight and a little oar the night before each game. I would bet he has trademarked the "Row The Boat" phrase and is making royalties off of all the merchandise WMU sells.
Honestly - I am surprised WMU lets him wear a GROW jacket. How about a WMU jacket? At least "Boiler Up" has our name in it.

Of course, Burke let DH put "One Brick Higher" on the back of the helmets. What a great saying that was. (4) years later and we are (4) stories deeper in the basement than when he started "laying the bricks". Maybe we can BROHM The Canoe. Just Kidding.

After seeing the meaning and intent behind Row the Boat, I really don't care how much he uses it. If it works for him, great. It doesn't affect us one way or the other.

Actually Western Michigan has trade marked it, which is probably why they allow the stuff on their uniforms. Of course that kind of gives Fleck an issue if/when he moves on, he has to come up with a new catch phrase.

If its MN, he can copyright "No one can shoot, drown, blowup or kill the gopher" to music by Kenny Loggins with his consent to "I'm Alright"

I'm going to rewatch the tv show, "Coach" through the rest of winter in honor of our divisional rivals...Iowa and Minny. Go Minnesota State!

Campus shots were @ Iowa, stadium shots were @ Minnesota, IIRC.

Agreed, another Cordova blunder that she paid a large amount to a consulting firm for.
Several years ago I wrote to the Purdue PR folks and told them that "Makers" was terrible and that they should change the University slogan to "Giant Leaps for Mankind". The responded by telling me that "Makers" had won some stupid award and they were going to stick with it.
