Minnesota looking for a new football coach (link)

I'm not sure I'd want a slogan that won a stupid award. I'd prefer one that won a smart intelligent and logical award. I'm not sure if I should air this publically, but I also thought Boiler Up was one of the stupidest cheers ever created too.

I don't like Boiler Up either. It comes from "Cowboy Up" and was brought to Purdue, and pushed by, Arnette Tiller.

The Tampa Bay Rays use "RAYS UP" which I like.

The Maker's All thing didn't bother me so much as a slogan, but the fact anyone thought Purdue needed rebranding in the first place was sheer idiocy.

Looking like Fleck is now official. Gonna be interesting to see which program goes farther sooner. I suspect Minnie will do better because they have less of a climb out of the hole

Not if the lose a bunch of kids to transfer like some players are claiming. And their recruiting is no better than ours right now. I think it's a dead heat and will be a great comparison between the two coaches for the next few years. I still think we got the better one but fortunately we can prove it on the field.

apparently minny stepped up and paid a premium for him... 3.7m/yr for 5 years.
6th highest in big ten, 2nd in the west.

dude is strange though lol.
i could not imagine hearing this stuff at purdue

From today...
“Row the Boat will be part of it…but Ski-U-Mah is everything. The story of Ski-U-Mah -- there’s a canoe, which is a boat. You got a paddle, which is an oar. And we’ve got the Northern Star here, which is our compass.”

“If you’re going to teach a rivalry, you can’t use Jordan and Bird anymore. They think Jordan’s the guy that makes the sneakers. You gotta use Kanye and Drake.”

“I eat difficult conversations for breakfast.”

He's an absolute nut job. Brohm is classy and runs a wide open offense. Just what the Boilers need. All of the new staff seem like great hires too. Let the rivalry begin!

why did Fleck settle foe Minn. instead of waiting till next year when something better may open?

Actually Western Michigan has trade marked it, which is probably why they allow the stuff on their uniforms. Of course that kind of gives Fleck an issue if/when he moves on, he has to come up with a new catch phrase.
"Dig Another Hole" like a Gopher does. Should fit Fleck's new direction...headed toward China. Talk about screwing your self out of millions and probably a shot at the Oregon job ....THEN he takes the Minny job? Lol...I just don't see it. And damn am I happy Bobinski made the right hire.

Here's three reasons:
1. WMU got thumped by Wisconsin in their bowl game.
2. Their next game is Southern Cal in LA.
3. The game after that is Michigan State in E. Lansing.
Your assumption that something better would be open to Fleck at the end of the 2017 season is tenuous. Then there is the salary at Minny vs WMU.

That SC QB alone probably changed his mind....Get while the gettin...is ok...

That and the only QB he's ever had at WMU is graduating along with his all time WR. Fleck didn't settle for Minnesota, it was the only job he actually got offered.

I think it will be interesting to see how his style works at a higher level. I loved him at first with the energy, but the more play it got, it does start to get old and wears you out, or at least it did me. So I'll be interested to see how long he can keep this going.

This will be interesting, we will see how Purdue going for a guy like Brohms, who I am in love with, to Fleck who was my #1, in that same breath remember my #1 last go around was Hazell so... I think there will be a lot of comparisons, but I think Brohms is the better hire and Fleck will not be able to get past the flavor of the month.

By year 3 Purdue will be kicking minnesotta's ass.

Hazell wasn't #1, Butch Jones was. Depending on what you read, it sounds like Doeren was #2 choice, so Hazell was closer to the 3rd choice.

I believe he was stating who his #1 was personally. Not confident in saying Brohm was our #1 this time around either - and there's nothing wrong with that. Funny to see the same people that were clamoring for Fleck bash him now.

What's interesting is hoy quality coaches are still floating around: Miles, Kelly, Claeys, etc. Could even throw in Pelini. I think that influenced Fleck that he better take the bird in the hand.

A lot of times, experienced coaches do not necessarily try to rush into another job. Especially those fired - sometimes it's better to let the "negative" impression die down and let your stock go back up as Miles, Kelly are name recognition guys.

I wouldn't throw Fleck into that category. I'm not sure what his thought process was - and I haven't followed it very quickly to really comment on that.

That's a good point. I can't see somebody of Miles or Kelly's stature wanting to get involved in a program that isn't national championship capable. A guy like Fleck probably wanted to get into a solid Power 5 program that he could build his resume for the next step up into an elite program. I just find the current situation with some fairly respected coaches available interesting as it contrasts with the last time we were in the market. I'm optimistic with the guy we got. I think he's a good choice with our current circumstance.

I couldn't agree more. It's beyond corny. He cares more about slogans than anything. His game jacket says GROW on it. The plays helmets say "ROW" on them and have oars on the top of them. WTF - how about Bronco's? When the players come off the field, he is crouched down rowing. He goes around the hotel and gives his players a kiss goodnight and a little oar the night before each game. I would bet he has trademarked the "Row The Boat" phrase and is making royalties off of all the merchandise WMU sells.
Honestly - I am surprised WMU lets him wear a GROW jacket. How about a WMU jacket? At least "Boiler Up" has our name in it.

Of course, Burke let DH put "One Brick Higher" on the back of the helmets. What a great saying that was. (4) years later and we are (4) stories deeper in the basement than when he started "laying the bricks". Maybe we can BROHM The Canoe. Just Kidding.
Row the Boat is copyrighted and owned by WMU, I believe....

I wish him well. He has a tough job ahead of him. Many people look at WMU and point to the loss of his QB and WR and say it's going to be very hard to come close to the success he enjoyed this year. We all know how an experienced QB like Breese made Tiller look like a great coach and hid many of our deficiencies. I highly doubt WMU beats another BIG 10 team any time soon.

I'm not really big on his recruiting skills. He moved on up to a power 5 school, but brought with him six MAC caliber recruits from WMU. This just shows how bad Hazell was as a recruiter. When Hazell came to Purdue, none of the recruits he had established a relationship at his previous college followed him to Purdue. Even Brohm has brought 3 and possibly 2 more of his recruits from WKU to Purdue. Did nobody like Hazell?

Fleck also goes into a hornets nest with the team hating the administration firing Claeys and hiring Fleck as their way of handling the situation. He still has to deal with the fact he has 10 players still suspended by the AD, not him. And 1 player whose dad said he would transfer because of the allegations. It will be very hard to gain the players' trust.

Why didn't Fleck wait a year at WMU for another Big job to open up for him? To be blunt honest, he was considered by five big job universities this year, and only one was interested in him enough to give him an offer. Maybe Fleck realized, by waiting a year, the same would be true, and he'd have have more competition next year for those vacancies. There is no guarantee any bigger offers would have materialized next year.

For the last 4 years Minnesota has benefited from a weak non conference schedule and beating Purdue. During that same timeframe their recruiting class ranking has been next to last in the BIG 10. I like our chances of beating Minn this year.

Their recruiting class has been next to last so it must have been coaching that was the reason they only lost to Penn St. by 3,Iowa by 7, Neb. by 7, Wisc. by 14 and beat a ranked team Washington St. in a bowl game. There are many times you don`t know shit!!

fine , you don't agree with me. Keep your language to yourself. Minn's 2017 recruiting class is currently ranked 12th in the BIG 10. in 2016, it was 8th. in 2015 , it was 13th. In 2014, it was 11th. in 2013, it was 14th. In 2012, it was 12th. if not for Purdue, Minnesota's recruiting class would have been worse. I can't believe you're arguing with my statement.

This year, Minn played Indiana St, a 4-8 Oregon State team and a 7-6 Colorado St team. I don't consider that a tough non-conference schedule.

Last year they played an 8- 5 TCU team and lost. They beat an 8-5 Ohio team. and beat a 3-9 Kent St team 10-7 ! Again, that's a rather light non-conference schedule.

in 2014, they were 3-1 in non conference games, again losing to TCU and beating Middle Tenn St, Eastern Illinois and a 4-7 San Jose St team.

Again, I'll restate Minn has had a very favorable non-conference schedule to pad wins to their resume.

after the boycott, the 10 players remained suspended and did not play in their bowl game. They were given the option of appealing their suspension, but that is a huge issue Fleck will have to deal with.

And YES, they DID have a good coach - several of them that got the most out of the talent they had. .Coach Kill was a tremendous coach. And I never said anything bad about Coach Cleays.

What I did say is looking at their low talent level, and player issues, and with Purdue replacing Hazell with a real coach, I like our chances in beating Minn this year. I'm not sure what you're arguing about other than making a personal attack.

Over the past three years I often wondered: "Why was Haze such a poor recruiter?". He was an articulate, good-looking, charismatic dude and you'd think he would really connect with black kids in particular. But it just didn't happen.

Slight edge to them because of their new stadium. I actually think both programs got the right coach for their program if Fleck goes there. I think Purdue for the guy they needed to revive their identity in Brohm. Fleck seems like a better fit at Minnesota.

Oh.
My.
GOODness.

This has Tiller/Mason written all over it.

Oh H*LL no, the Minny job is not a top job in the B1G . . . in any division.

It's not better than Northwestern. Or Illinois. Or Purdue. Kudos to them for their financial commitment, but ... no. HECK no.

Goodness, people . . . c'mon!

Just moved here from Indiana in July of last year. Depends on success level and honeymoon will be on till they start slow. If he wins it will be good but if not Row The Boat will get old fast.
