Michigan is coming off a close overtime win last Sunday over Northwestern in Ann Arbor, as the Wolverines shot just 36 percent overall and 25 percent from long range. They made 9 of 10 free throws in the final minutes to put the game away.. Purdue is coming off a disappointing home loss to Ohio State on Tuesday, where the Boilers let a first-half 16-point lead dissipate and failed to close the game out in the final eight minutes.
Senior center Vladislav Goldin leads the Wolverines scoring, averaging 16.4 points with 6.1 rebounds per game. Joinin him are junior guard Tre Donaldson (12.6 PPG and 4.3 APG), junior center Danny Wolf (12.5 PPG and 10.2 RPG) and junior guard Roddy Gayle Jr. (11.8 PPG), a transfer from Ohio State.
Michigan is rated 12th overall in the KenPom ratings, 14th in offensive efficiency and 25th in defensive efficiency. They play at well above average in pace, rated 54th in adjusted tempo. The Wolverines score 84.6 points per game (16th nationally) on outstanding 50.6 percent shooting (4th nationally), including 37.7 percent from beyond the arc (32nd). Defensively, they surrender 69.4 points per game (114th) and their opponents shoot 39.6 percent overall (28th) with a 29.7 three-point mark (35th).
Purdue is rated 9th overall in KenPom, 11th offensively and 26th defensively. The Boilers' adjusted tempo rating is 297th.
This game is a supreme challenge for the Purdue team and the toughest match-up they've faced in conference play. They certainly cannot afford any stretches like the second half on Tuesday, or they will find themselves trailing both Michigan-based teams in the standings and playing catch-up for the foreseeable future. They definitely need an all-hands-on-deck effort and a better game from their floor leader, Braden Smith. He was off most of the night, and the early foul trouble certainly didn't help.
The Goldin/Wolf two-man game will be a focus for the Purdue defense, and the Boilers' success with defensing that will go a long way in determining the game's outcome. Michigan does not go extremely deep with its bench, so that might be an area where Purdue can try to exploit. They also don't quite have as big and physical of guard play that sometimes plays havoc with Braden Smith and the rest of the Purdue backcourt. Gicarri Harris and CJ Cox could also prove to be difference makers if they can provide some additional production, and in addition, Purdue will need to be better from long-range on both ends of the floor, as that was the biggest difference in the last game. They are still forcing turnovers - more of that tonight would be an added bonus.
Some thoughts from Coach Matt Painter:
"They obviously have a very talented team. They have a very unique make-up with Danny Wolf and the way he can handle the ball and pass the basketball. I think that's probably the thing that jumps out the most. But you can't lose sight of how good Tre Donaldson and Nimari Burnett are.....and then Vlad Goldin has had a fabulous season. He was really good against Northwestern the other day.
They're skilled.....they're well coached. They're very good in transition......very physical front line.
We've....a lot of times been a bigger team than other people.....so we know how people kind of go against that.......You want to see some things that maybe are their weaknesses and if it can connect with your strengths then it makes some sense.
We'll have to be able to handle them (Wolf and Goldin two-man game) from driving it and passing it to make those plays....that's the key to being able to keep them out of the paint."
As to the schedule of games and any issues - gotta like Matt Painter and his approach.....
"No not really. Just they line the schedule up and you play....and that's what you do in the spring. Everybody gets the short end sometime. You got to be able to muster through it. Play well.......You still got to go out and compete."
Purdue needs one of its best efforts of the season to prevail.....can they deliver and get a key win over one of the contenders?
We shall see, coming up in a few hours.....
